"Oh, BTW, Atom- the instructions and box art [for Skywarp] say that the tails are supposed to point upwards against the leg, not backwards as an extra support/heel. Just FYI... ;)"

"No idea what your talking about Eva.... My tailfins only move the way shown."

    LOL
He's right Atom, the tailfins turn like he said. I didn't even notice it until EVA mentioned it but yeah, he's transformed wrong.

There's an extra joint there, right at the 'ankle'! Both the tails and 'mini-wings' point forwards, and then fold up against the lower legs. I know it's different from the G1 ver., but that's how the Classics ver. works. Look at your instructions; they should be identical to Skywarp's. That joint serves no other purpose even when changing him.

Only Starscream figure I've ever owned is the Ultra-sized "Cybertron" figure. Far bigger than the "Galaxy Force" version, it looked cool but was a bit of a let-down for such a huge figure. Oh well...

Now, I got Skywarp through the Target-exclusive Ultra Magnus VS. Skywarp set, and I was very surprised at how small he was! Poesabillity was fair, though some of the joints didn't quite move the way I had hoped they would, and the wings got in the way of the arm launchers (Mirage and Optimus Prime must've spoiled me).
The G1 Starscream is one of those figures that I've debated whether-or-not I like the toy enough to look for one. The MP-03 Starscream, I decided after much debate [and even after seeing the US-repaint ver.], wasn't really worth pursuing. Nor is the 2007 movie ver. (That one's just ugly!) It's a character I'd like to have, but none of the toy's I've seen are really saying, "Buy Me!"

Besides, I've never been able to figure out why placing weapons (pointed downwards) on the forearms like that is a good idea! (The OZ-00MS Tallgeese from "Gundam Wing" was equally baffling, with the main thrusters mounted only onto the forearms!)

    ...

Oh, BTW, Atom- the instructions and box art [for Skywarp] say that the tails are supposed to point upwards against the leg, not backwards as an extra support/heel. Just FYI... ;)

This guy is such an improvement over his G1 incarnation it's like comparing an early Model-T to a brand new Shelby Cobra.
Starscream is one of the few G1 Transformers I didn't own as a child, my friend had him though. Although I absolutely loved the cartoon anime character of Starscream, the toy left a little to be desired as there was very little articulation. In fact he was a hunk of plastic, a little die-cast and had arms you could move up and down. His jet mode looked very good as long as you didn't lose that ever-important front landing gear(every kid I knew that owned a seeker lost it!).

The new seekers are instant classics(no pun intended!) IMO, every one of them. Skywarp and Ramjet are both VERY cool. Ramjet in particular is completely anime accurate.

Yes, I have the Botcon seekers(Thundercracker, Thrust, Dirge) as well, and although I agree they were heavily overpriced, I am glad I bought a set now.

My only real complaint about Starscream is that I wish they would have painted his face like they did on Skywarp. The paint really brought out the details on his face. Besides that BUY HIM NOW, while you still can!

  • Well, I am a die-hard Mazinger fan, and know everything about it (them)... ;p The Fewture Mazingers look good and all, but there is something just wrong with having any Mazinger sporting "teeth"... it is not the way these things should've been made! They could've least hidden those big choppers with mouth-pieces, like they did with the Getter Robots. Oh well, I'm still going to get them both...

I wonder how good is that micro-revoltech line going to do with figures sooooo small. The main complaint people have about the regular Revoltechs is that they are not big enough. Just imagine what they are going to say now!

The Mazinger Z   16 years 41 weeks ago
  • I am not a Mazinger fan in the slightest. I know absolutely nothing about it, nor am I really interested in it; too old-school for me to consider worth pursuing.
    .
But I must say those two figures look cool!

    ...

Wait-wait-wait- let me see if I've got this straight: these new Revoltech are even smaller than the 4" they usually are??? What the hell is up with that!?

  • I don't know if it has any metal, but either way, GN-U's Braiger is a beautiful looking toy. If the CDX review is positive I will have to start saving up.

Does anyone know what else is planned in the GN-U line? Perhaps the other J9 robots?

    THAT'S a throw!

...Just keep in mind I'm a lefty...and I had to sorta whip it sidearm to avoid hitting something valuable or crashing into something in my cramped loft! ;)

Anyway, I'm clearly biased as well. I love what these guys have done...and I love even more what they have coming!

Just to re-post what I've mentioned on TBDX, what I found fascinating about these toys is that at SDCC, everyone was stopping by to check 'em out. Young adults, old ornery collectors, young children. No one left without a smile on their face...

At the same time, only one sort of people or another would visit the other toy makers' booths. It really takes something to have the universal appeal Onell Design has touched upon.

  • Hey Rodimus, Kawamori was not the driving force on Diaclone by any means, only one of many artists working on the series for the years it was out, not to mention all the talented toy guys who actually made the designs workable toys. Also, Floro Dery was working with a talented team of assistants as well, and as far as I know, this was all taking place in LA in the 80's, so I'm guessing those guys were Americans too, not to mention the Japanese animators who were also involved in redesigning some of the season 1 characters. Dery and his team of assistants did do all the design work for the original movie, though, but none of this design work is in the Michael Bay movie.

There's no conspiracy of Hasbro keeping better stuff from American shores. In the cases of Headmasters, Masterforce, and Victory, they came AFTER America. The show was cancelled here because it lost popularity, not because Hasbro wanted to hide later seasons. Transformers was still popular in Japan so they made new stuff. The Headmasters and Powermaster lines were available in the US FIRST and were modified by Takara for the Japanese market, which is why you have toys like God Ginrai and Doubleclouder being superior to Powermaster Optimus Prime and Doubledealer. They were improved. This is entirely due to market conditions is not some "omg evil american corporation!" conspiracy.

Action Masters, like Micromasters, was an attempt to cash in newer toy lines that were popular in the US at the time to dubious success. When your gimmick (transforming) is no longer hot shit, toy companies frequently attempt to copy what is trendy at the time, and that almost never works.

G2 was mostly a matter of keeping their trademarks up to date and trying to make a few extra dollars as cheaply as possible, hence the recycled cartoon, recycled toys (both from the original American TF line, and the European/Japanese TF lines that kept going while the US one was cancelled), and you can certainly criticize it for being lazy, but obviously they felt it was not worth expending huge amounts of money on. I don't know why you are so up in arms about this considering that since Beast Wars, over ten years now, TF has been enduringly popular in the US and has had new toys and new cartoons every year for ten years. What more do you want?

Anyway, I am still not surprised the movie did not credit any of the Japanese designers or American writers of previous material, because they do not LEGALLY or for purposes of writer's guild abitration NEED to. The movie does NOT use the original designs at all, clearly, and only vaugely resembles the old story. Futhermore, Hasbro has always retained all rights and thus the movie is not REQUIRED to credit anyone except Hasbro.

Save your anger for Michael Bay's movie just being a pisspoor movie, because that is the real issue, not that it didn't credit people who weren't involved. If I were someone like Bob Budianksy or Simon Furman, I would be glad my name wasn't on this piece of crap.

I agree with you, the lack of a weapon is a little disappointing, but otherwise these figures are fun on a bun. Hopefully we'll get an accessory pack with a pile of hand-held weapons and replacement accessory limbs.

I also think it's worth noting that while most small independent toy makers are using the sofubi format to express themselves, these are made of solid, extremely durable injection-molded PVC. Onell really is paving the way here to do something different.

I was speaking with Matt Doughty recently and he said, "I want it to be the summer of '87 forever." I think these guys have the right idea.

Oh, yeah, love that black test shot. Lucky dog!

  • TF opened at #1 in japan.

more proof people will go to see ANYTHING YOU TELL THEM TO. no matter how bad it is.

i bought a bootleg DVD last weekend for $3.

the designs of the robots are probably the *worst* i have ever seen on screen, no scratch that. *worst robot designs ever*. whenever there is more than 1 robot on screen you can't tell what's going on at all. just blur blur blur, jumble of kipple.

what a waste, glad i only spent $3 on this rather than waste anymore of my life at the theatre, and give Bay any more money.

the only good thing about this is:

everyone will forget all about this shitty film by next year, just like Independance Day.

  • Hey Jermey

I am honored that you've answered my feedback in such a short notice. A hundred thanks to you from the heart. About what you said to the TF Bible origin and so-on, yes...you are 80% correct about the TF playbook totally american, and I apologized for not bringing up Bob Budiansky, Jim Shooter, Larry DiTillo, and Simon Furman. The reason for saying 80% is because most of the concept designs for the US/UK comics and cartoon were developed by Floro Dery, an Asian illustrator from the Phillipines and one hell of an artist.

So the way I see it is that the TF mythos is actually developed by a layer of hardworking writers and artists from East to West. What remained of Diaclone still lives on with Japanese TFs with the Autobot Commander as 'Convoy' instead of Prime. Diaclone and Microman lives on through TFs. I'll always respect these guys from Marvel Comics for developing the Bots/Cons, but I'll always go back to the core that made it possible which is Shoji Kawamori and Shinji Aramaki and anybody else from Japan that I've left out.

Which is why it that it makes me feel guilty that I've bothered to watch this movie. I didn't pay a ticket to go see it, cause I've downloaded it but nevertheless, the guilt is still there because I've felt that I helped Bay and Spielberg(whom I've lost some respect) bushwacked Kawamori, Budiansky, Furman, Stan Bush, Frank Welker, Bob Forward, Larry DiTillo,Pat Lee, Peter Chung, and especially Floro Dery who was instrumental in fleshing out the creative visual force of Transformers: The Movie.

Honestly, I've felt sorry or Kawamori the most because he was the driving force of Diaclone...I mean he created Jetfire for God's sake, the most realistic, unique alien mechanoid ever designed in contemporary history. and Hollywood dismissed him like he didn't exist. If that's the case, those film moguls better stay the hell away from Anime...period!

I've felt like that I've betrayed these guys by watching this hypocritical American flismy-flopper.
Speaking of betrayal, I never forgave Hasbro or whoever was in charge of mishandling the G1 franchise for holding out on us by not distributing the lost 3 seasons of TFs which were shown in Japan after they axed the 4th season ending with 'Rebirth' trilogy. Japan got all the good stuff with God Ginrai, Metalhawk, and Star Saber, and Dia Atlas. While Hasbro's been covering-up this production by give us crappy Powermaster Prime and Action Masters and please don't get started with G2.

I've learned about this whole conspiracy when I was in college back in 1999. I was a fool into believeing that Corporate America like Hasbro has learned this lesson when they finally re-collaborated with Takara (now a part of Tomy) in developing Armada,Energon, and Cybertron, and the G1 reissues, but now with this TF:Animated, and the politically correct bullshit that has banned the G1 Megatron into US soil, my optimism of foreign relations has gone down into the bottomless pit of despair.

If the Japanese audience accepts this American Bay-Shit film this month just like those misguided Americans whom unanimously did....I think I'm gonna bash my head on the flatscreen and get brain seizures.

Jeremy, I must know....is it a box-office eclispe in the land of the 'Rising Sun'? Tell me the true and I promise....I really, really promise that I won't injure my head.

  • Cheap-! Cheap!
    .
I just realized that the lower waist/hip joint part they used for this re-styled Unit-02 is actually the same one that is designed for the Mass Production EVA set! Everyone knows that except for the legs and arms, the MP EVAs' bodies are different from Units -00 through -04!

    Re- GX-13 Dancouga

Today I had one of those rare days when you get a bit of extra money and you really want to burn it. And burn it I did, I just bought the GX-13 Dancouga. I had two options for the same dosh, Dancouga and the new Voltes V. I opted for the former, mainly because my local comics shop had it in stock and I got it for quite a bargain, around 150 dollars and I didn't have to pay shipping, handling and duties at the post office. Its frustrating how these things get so expensive when you really determine all the costs. My comics stuff dealer had this item hanging in his shop for quite a while, and after removing all the parts from the box I could see why. Most of it is plastic, it has very fragile parts, especially the head transforming gizmo thing and even if it goes to a whopping 15 inches and makes quite an impression on my toy shelf, it's my most disappointing piece. The transformations aren't well explained on the instruction booklet. Forming the entire robot is an altogether headache as well. I spent around two hours trying to figure out if my robot looked the same as the one in the picture on the box and somehow it still does not. I hate flimsy pieces, i never collected transformers because they feel too toy-like and plasticky. The head dosen't fit into place, and after giving up on it you feel like you've bought a broken toy. To be honest, it does look impressive when completed. It did fill a nasty gap on my toy shelf too. So in a way, its quite good value. But I still think I should have got Voltes V, who will have to wait till my next paycheck. I'm into classic robots, big go nagai fan, so dancouga isn't really my piece of cake. However I have him now, my money is gone, and I had my hour of happiness. Get him if you like 'em big, but if you really do, get the marmit daikogin grendizer, plenty expensive, but worth every dime, even if articulation is virtually non existant. A work of art. If you like chogokin don't miss out on the re-released GX-04S, the true chogokin holy grail, that is if ur unlucky enough to have missed it...

Oh, it was just a random $1-only store up in Mount Vernon, WA. The bootleg Evangelion Unit-00' that I have I was stunned to find at a $1-only store in Vancouver, Canada! (The latter was over 6 years ago, so I doubt they carry/make them anymore.)
