Hoban Washburne
Review by JoshB
Like many nerds, I love Firefly. The show had just great characters, and like many, I was very excited when I heard they were getting the ReAction treatment from Funko. Well, I've got them all, and some are good, and some are not so good. Lets go through the set, starting with Hoban Washburne, otherwise known as Wash.
Wash is the pilot of the Serenity, the Firefly-Class ship that is almost as much a character as anyone on the show. Played by Alan Tudyk, Wash is a happy-go-lucky pilot with a heart of gold and love for plastic dinosaurs. He's also an amazing pilot.
This reaction figure comes in a nice blister card as if it was released in the early 80s. Kudos to Funko for great packaging design.
The stand shown here is NOT included. Wash stands 3 3/4 inches tall and he includes two toy dinosaurs that he kept in the cockpit of Serenity.
The overall design of the figure is great, and really mimics the style of the old Kenner style figures.
There's just one problem. THAT FACE.
Not only does the sculpt not look like Wash, but what the hell is up with the orange paint for the eyes and eyebrows? First of all, they aren't lined up right and the eyes are printed too high on the face. Then there is the color - shouldn't the eyebrows be the same color as the hair, and then maybe black for the eyes? Shouldn't the hair be orange too? I just don't get it. So close Funko, so close. Fortunately, not all the figures in the line have this issue.

1 comment postedBeing in the business, you would be in a much better position to know this than I, but I heard a rumor that the Funko likenesses are purposefully bad so they can avoid paying licensing fees for the various actors. That's how they can produce such a wide range of properties at such a low price point.
Makes sense to me. And I've never seen a ReAction figure that was a decent likeness of anybody.
(Though my one and only ReAction purchase so far has been the Zoe Washburn, because....it's Zoe.) :-)
