F91 had its moments, it just

F91 had its moments, it just suffered as a failed reboot of the series, something they've tried several times - finally succeeding with Seed.

But that is revisionist history like the Japanese can do oh so well.

I really enjoyed the designs of the F-91 mecha, it's a part of Gundam that doesn't get much in the way of merchandise after the avalanche of stuff when it came out. The Guntank was particularly interesting since it was a transforming unit that had legs as well.

Well, there is a reason it's not so great...

F91 was supposed to be a full-length anime, but it got scrapped and eventually saved as a movie. I wouldn't say it was supposed to reboot the franchise either, seeing as 0080 was released just two years prior. The reason it's not as big as it should be is because hours of anime was compressed into just under two hours.
I could say more, but really, all that needs to be said is that it's definitely not an anime that could be passed over by saying "lol no."
And yeah, the Guntank descendant from the movie was a pretty cool design, I'm glad they gave it a predecessor in UC's Loto.
Of course, the best thing about F91 is that it led to the Crossbone Gundam manga. :3 Gundam = good. Pirates = good. Pirate-themed Gundams = f*ck yeah.

I think 'lol no' does apply...

I'm not talking about the impact or pre-production of F91 here. It lead to one of my favourite parts of Gundam (Crossbone- who doesn't love it?) but the film itself was kinda poor. It wasn't awful or anything (far away from the disastrous CCA) but it's not very memorable.

You'll almost never catch me

You'll almost never catch me commenting about Gundam because I burned out on the franchise...a good ten years ago (basically, after 08th Mobile Suit Team and Gundam X). Before that, though, I was pretty knowledgeable about the subject and definitely considered myself a "fan".

Anyway, I loved this movie at the time it came out (seen via umpteenth-generation fansubbed VHS!), but we were desperate anime fans back then. ANY legit Gundam media was gobbled up with little reflection. Now, obviously, it's pretty clear that the movie sucks...for all the reasons stated.

But still, I just wanna say that I absolutely adored the majority of the mecha designs from this movie. Fortunately, besides the movie, itself, we had access to the Bandai 1/100 models. By today's standards, they're pretty crummy, but at the time, they weren't bad at all. The standouts include the G-Cannon, the Heavygun, the Den'an Zon, and the Berga Giros.

Ah, this takes me back... ;)
