First wave of 2010 "Tensou Sentai Goseiger" toys announced

We are getting our first glimpses of official materials from the 2010 Super Sentai Series, "Tensou Sentai Goseiger". (I have not found translated names yet, so please fill-in-the-blanks in your comments!)

First-off, the card-carrying-theme has been confirmed. We don't know yet how it will be utilized, but from the images below, they seem to be able to use one card to summon [at least] three mecha at one time, directly related to accessory mecha power-ups. Cards of any kind have never been used before in the Super Sentai Series, even though small unique collectible electronic cartridges ("Engine Souls") were introduced for 2008, and mecha weapons had unique summoning discs ("Shinobi Medals") in 2002.

So, we're getting what looks to be avatars of animals rather than fully-formed animals. The list I've seen indicates a-

  • red dragon (seen it before)
  • blue shark (seen it before)
  • white phoenix (seen the bird before, but not in white)
  • yellow tiger (seen it once before)
  • black snake (Concept work was done for "GaoRanger" for a cobra snake, but a toy was never produced, so this is a new animal to the Super Sentai Series franchise.)

The heads of all the mecha shown here can be detached from the bodies and attached to the standardized blaster to the right to make them ranger-unique, which can also accept cards of its own. This also means that since the basic-five mecha can have their heads removed as well, the accessory mecha heads (three sets are shown so-far) can swap with them. Including the basic heads, there appear to be no less than 14 mounting points for mecha heads on just the first lead robo!

The wings can be rotated back so that they are behind the shoulders. (This is good!)

The first accessory mecha are on the bottom-right side of this first picture, and are sold in sets of three, but do not come with bodies of their own. They are-

  • manta ray (new to the Series, but concept work was done before in "GaoRanger")
  • swordfish (seen it before)
  • hammerhead shark (seen it before)

-and-

  • stag beetle (seen it before)
  • tyrannosaurus rex(?)(seen it before)
  • drill (possibly a mole, which would be new to the Series)

And these three are-

  • falcon
  • (swan or pelican?)
  • pteranodon

I'm getting a very "GaoRanger"-meets-"AbaRanger"-vibe here with the swapping heads, and that the waist of the mecha can separate. (I wonder if they'll be cross-compatible...?)

With 14 attachment points for heads, have we reached the cluster-f**k stage already? Ordinarily I'd say yes, as 14 mecha heads breaks the record for most mecha in a combo (the current record being 12). But because they are only heads at this point, I'm not ready to label it as such just yet.

This guy is a triple-changer, which is not only infrequent in Super Sentai, but very rare for a stand-alone mecha character!

And yes, the image indicates it can combine with the lead robo. So, does that make him the first Super Sentai quad-changer?

I'm not sure about video game machine-dude up there, but I'm definitely gonna swing for all of these, they look pretty awesome, even if they are more gimmicky than usual! (Is there a "usual" at this point?) I just like the fact that they are so flashy and gimmicky right off the bat rather than waiting for the accessory mecha. (Are they really mecha at this point, or just more spirit/avatars?)
I'll wait on the blaster until I see it in-use in the series.

Be aware, also, that new images of the Goseiger themselves have surfaced, but I haven't found any clear images of them yet. Their card-reader devices look like the faces of those idols from Easter Island in gold, silver, and red eyes, and the mouths open to accept the cards. I'm not certain if they are actual changers, or if they're wrist-mounted devices, but they all look the same for each ranger.

(Special thanks to JoshB for finding these images!)

Naw- I actually typed the wrong name; I meant to say "stag", not "kabuto".

^_^;

Sorry 'bout that.

We have seen two kabutomushi beetles before- Gourai Beetle from "Hurricanger", and Kabuto Origami fron the soon-to-end "Shinkenger"- but that is not what is shown above.

Goheaders

These different heads and the gimmicks surrounding them is known as the Goheader Series. There are also cards that take more after Kamen Rider Decade's Ganbaride cards than anything else. Most of the role-playing toys like the henshin devices and the unique weapons revolve around these cards.

The main robot is known as GoseiGreat, and is comprised of GoseiDragon, GoseiSnake, GoseiShark, GoseiPhoenix, and GoseiTiger. Each of the heads on GoseiGreat can be disconnected and be swapped out with another Goheader. There are three main groups of Goheaders: Seakku (water-type), Landikku (earth-type), and Skykku (air-type). Sets of three belonging to the same group are also known as "brothers", and can recombine for new formations. The main three so far are named, appropriately enough, Seakku GoseiGreat, Landikku GoseiGreat, and Skykku GoseiGreat.

The mascot robo is known as Data Sypher. The final attack of the combination between it and GoseiGreat uses the fourteen heads, but at this point, I'm not sure if the heads are mounted before being used.

That pretty much covers all

That pretty much covers all the information that I can read.
The only thing I can really add is that the gun is called the "Gosei Blaster" and that the three bird heads are Taka (Falcon), Crow, and something else (the scan cuts the text for the pteradactyl type one so I don't know there). As for the other two sets, well the text isn't high enough resolution to make out.

Just hope the 'teams' have

Just hope the 'teams' have full bodies rather than just heads.

From the images above, it

From the images above, it doesn't look like they do have individual bodies, or else we'd see them here. It looks, instead, like at least some of the heads have a feature in/on them- wheels, moving transformable parts, and missiles(?).

That's why I said these looks like avatars/spirits rather than being mecha unto themselves. If they were proper mecha(?), they would have full bodies to go with.

The gimmickness of these

The gimmickness of these things is gonna kill me. The Megazord are getting less and less exciting in terms of transformation every year in order to be more flashy and gimmicky. The Shinkanger was nice, but the other units are nothing more that swap-formers who combine with every other set in the line at the same time just to show it's possible, not because it looks good. Yeah, I'm whining, but there times when these babes really rocked. Nowadays... not so much.

Oh, I'm right there with ya.

Oh, I'm right there with ya. Super Sentai has been losing it's appeal- particularly in the mecha- for many years now thanks to the increase in gimmicks to the detriment of everything else. I've been feeling it also since 2003 when "AbaRanger" aired.

But, don't forget that other giant robot toys are having the same growing pains, and I'm pointing specifically at Transformers here.

I'm beginning to [fear] that someday I, too, will turn away from Super Sentai because of the excessive gimmickiness...

True, the Unicron Trilogy

True, the Unicron Trilogy had an invasion of Gimmicks (though still produced some very impressive robots), but since Classics showed up, the mainstream (Scout, Deluxe, Voyager, Leader) toys are more than good and the minor gimmicks don't get in the way of the robots image (while writing this I turn to look at my-just-arrived The Fallen).

While I loved Shinken-Oh

While I loved Shinken-Oh these figures really kind of bother me. I'm not sure I like the aesthetic of the animal robot trains at all. Plus I REALLY don't like the whole, "buy the figure, no buy ALL it's accessories." At least in Hurricanger the main robots were awesome and they worked well with the ball gimmick.

I think it worked with

I think it worked with Hurricanger because the balls were minimalistic. They weren't so much limb swapping as they were just small things used as weapons. But at the same time, I also though that in Gaorangers it was okay. Maybe that's because at the time it seemed fresh and new, but not so much as of recent years which instead seems to forget that mechs should have aesthetic appeal and just pile on new toy after toy after toy to the point where the robots can't even freaking walk! Which is odd, considering I actually don't mind that Samurai Ha-Oh as much...

Hmm

I sure like this better than Shinkenger's mecha, but still, not as nifty as past years have been. Still, I like the ranger costumes, and hope Power Rangers continues with this series in 2011. I can't afford to import these things! :)

i dont get this. swappable

i dont get this. swappable heads, trains and arcade cabinets? what is the theme of this series? the robot looks ugly and clunky with those big black connector points all over the place. maybe seeing the show i might feel differently when the theme falls together (i usually do) but if not, hey more money for transformers!

Ohranger mk. II?

I've always had this theory that the some of the more recent Sentai have mirrored 90s shows:
Dairanger to Gekiranger
Carranger/Turboranger to Go-onger
Kakuranger to Hurricanger
Zyuranger to Abaranger
Gingaman to Magiranger

And I though Oh, with its' mixed themes (geometric shapes, ancient structures and automated boxers?!) and swappable heads were ready for reinvention, and just have a look at this. I hope the show will be better than Shinkenger, can't stand that, and pretty much all of 'em since Timeranger have been a bit crap (Geki notwithstanding). Fingers crossed for another Timeranger!

Its all about money!

Kids LOVE gimmicks! Gimmicks sell! Bandai wants to make more money, so put more gimmicks in the toys.
Transforming toys was a gimmick at first. It's now a very tired gimmick, as there is no surprise for these kids that this car/animal turns into a robot!
So you add something into the mix collectible cards, collectible discs/chips and now heads!
What kid does not want to be the first on his block to own all the collectibles to something? This is one constant for selling collectibles and toys.
Sorry guys they aren't thinking about you when they design this stuff. We're to picky/finicky! They're thinking about money and the little kids hands they can pry it out of!

I got 4 'big' questions for you buddy...

HOW do YOU know?
WHEN do YOU know?
WHERE do YOU know?

WHAT language do YOU speak it to get what YOU know?

Don't be a Worm, bro!

I guess this is some sort of in-joke I don't understand? I mean, he said something perfectly reasonable and then this bizarre conversation started. What's that about, fellas? Eh? Eh?

"Grandmother said this: ..."

"Grandmother said this: ..." is a line regularly used by the lead character in "Kamen Rider Kabuto" (2006); usually followed by a philosophical words-of-wisdom statement for him to make his point. (Ironically, we never saw his Grandmother in the series!)

Worms were the name of the alien baddies in "Kabuto".

Not this, that!

I realise that, man, I was more discussing the whole thing about Rodimus' random questions. I've never heard anyone else say 'Don't be a Worm, bro', TBQH. Anyway, I'm the one who asked you to review the ZB Zector in the first place. Ever gonna get around to that (and the Gourajin and Revolver Mammoth, for that matter)?

The only reason I haven't

The only reason I haven't covered TheBee Zecter is because I need to make new Velcro wrist straps so that it will fit me! (I can't demo it properly if I'm simply holding it in my hands, ya know?) Problem is, I can't find any Velcro straps that are double-sided & the right size anywhere in stores near me or online.

And, yes, I will get to the Gouraijin and Revolver Mammoth someday.

Dear Ranakara: The Weight of the Water

"I guess this is some sort of in-joke I don't understand? I mean, he said something perfectly reasonable and then this bizarre conversation started. What's that about, fellas? Eh? Eh?"

This is about testing the weight of the water Rankarana. You said Cosmo773's explanation's were perfectly reasonable. Well that's just the thing. It feels too perfect to be reasonable.

I asked him 4 simple questions about his sources, and his back was breaking chicken sweat. It's the same yellow, funky aroma that smells like Kus-Kus-Kusanagi02's Chumpy Soup.

It's the kind of soup that tastes like a heel.

In other words, I'm pretty confident that his sincere condolences for your misfortunes in this 'change for the sake of change' in the Super Sentai franchise are at heart, so the water's just as clear as a thin, sheet of ice.

Interesting enough, his heart weights the same as Duke Togo's!}:)

PS: Thank you for the coverage EVA, I appreciate your honest reaction of the upcoming series. More to come.
