Prototype 3" Shogun Warrior Raideen discovered

over at the Robot-Japan forums, KingboyD recently posted some scans of a German Mattel toy catalog from 1978.

Check out the prototype for the mini Raideen, and the new paint job for Gaiking!

They've got a lot of old catalog ads scanned over at Robot Japan, so go check them out!

Wow, this is huge news!

Wow, this is huge news! Never heard of anything like it. I really hope a production specimen turns up somewhere. I think I know someone who likes Raideen. :)

This will guarantee JoshB

This will guarantee JoshB many sleepless nights for the rest of his life! Who knew between this and the mini Raider, that the mini Shoguns line might hold a few holy grail worthy pieces for us collectors? And maybe it's just because of the newness of it all, but that mini Raydeen looks gorgeous, probably the best looking of the entire line!

Raydeen/ Raideen/ uh, Grandizer?

Great stuff! So cool the more stuff is archived, the easier to put together a bigger retro picture of the whole scene back then.

Love how that mini Raideen was such an early prototype, that it's named Grandizer!!?? HA!

G- Series

What are the G- Series number releases of the "mini" Combattler and Gaiking? I assume that these were not prototypes and were released as G- Series chogokin only for Japan? The middle picture shows them with shooting accessories, the large pics look like the "Collector Series" with no gimmicks included. Were these all protos?

The top and bottom ones are

The top and bottom ones are the 3" collector series. The middle pic shows the ST Popy Chogokins, released as 2-in-1 shogun warriors. Whats interesting about that picture is the Machine Hayabusa Popynica in the background of the shot. I wonder if it was planned as a Shogun Warriors release?

Molds

If Bandai still has the molds of these precious diecasts, why not re-issue them like Takara did with Koutetsu Jeeg?
