Having only watched the first few episodes, I feel that this is an instance where the art style defeats the dramatic thread of the show.
I like the chemistry of introducing a surfer-dude design look to a mecha show, but it has the effect of making the supposedly crappy, downtrodden universe looks rather fun to live in. (I.e. The boy protagonist whines about his environment when it is actually interesting to us.)
Incidentally, due to a broken connection I couldn't hear your comment about the Yamato Macross in CDX Live a while ago. Does it compare favourably with SOC?
