Ed Sandford began Robot-Japan back in 1996 as a paper newsletter, and went on to be one of the heavy hitters in the Japanese toy collecting scene. Recently Ed decided to "get out of the game" so to speak and sell his 16 year collections at auction. We talked with Ed to find out what made him decide to sell.
The Ed Sandford Collection will be up for auction September 13, 2012 via http://www.morphyauctions.com

Nice interview, and very many thanks for doing this special. I'm sure it's good for many readers to know who some of the old players in the collecting game are, and how the perspectives of the hobby , and the hobby methods have changed a bit over the years.
See you guys in PA!
The man who plays the robot in this awkward, early production of mine was Ed Sanford's college roommate.
He seems like a decent fellow, and the interview is really interesting (FedExing toy magazines to get a jump on the ads!). But Robot-Japan will always be "that site I had to register on many years ago to read some article, which has spammed my inbox ever since, ignoring all requests to unsubscribe".
Yo Japester....well you have my email now admin @ robot-japan .com email me and I'll unsubscribe you.
Funny comment, but I have unsubscribed every user that has wanted me to. Maybe you have multiple IDs .

Will do. Thanks, Ed.
Nope. Just the one ID. Same one I use everywhere.
I usually remember childhood toys very vividly. Even if the line did not become an obsession that followed me through to adulthood. Recently I looked at the 3djoe site and realized how much I actually owned of the first three years of the 3 3/4" joe line during my child hood. It was pretty satisfying to look back on and I would buy my first joe again, Grand Slam with the jump set. I'm still a sucker for it.
I looked at the machine robo section on robot-japan and had an oddly inverse experience. If you would have asked me a day before I would have told you that I only owned Leader-1. With the pics in front of me it all came back. I had zero, water walk, bentwing, dive dive, night ranger, geeper creeper and more. It's the only sci-fi robot line that I don't think about unless it's in front of me. I'm not saying anything about the quality of the line. Just sharing this black hole I found in my action figure psyche. :)
