A boy from a broken future, Trunks is a Saiyan warrior fighting to protect the Earth from the horrible android onslaught, an attack that has destroyed most of the planet and its people. Seeing a way to save the Earth’s future, Trunks travels back in time to relay important information to the Z Fighters to prepare them for the battle of their lives.
With this, Bandai gives us the Figuarts ZERO Super Saiyan Trunks figure from the Toei fighting adventure show entitled Dragonball Z. An immovable alternative and accompanying piece to their Figuarts line, Bandai certainly turns an extremely poseable Figuart into a kinda okay statue.
Let’s review:
Packaging:
The box is nice with black and a splash of purple amongst it. Simple overall, it shows the figure inside with some nice artwork on each face.
Aesthetics:
The colors on Trunks are pretty neat. Dark and matte, they do a good job giving contrast to his energy furls. Perhaps not completely anime accurate (they are a little too dark), the colors are applied well with no overspray or mess. There are even moments of intentional shading that gives the figure a good sense of presence.
The sculpt is solid and has a good bit of detail in it. His clothing jumbles and bunches to both emulate real clothing and Akira Toriyama’s art style. Not much of this figure is left flat or unattended. The translucent Super Saiyan hair is also a nice treat. Trunks also emulates his on screen counterpart quite well.
His pose is also quite actiony and appropriate of Trunks’s character: sword out and ready for killin’.
Articulation:
Being a Figuarts ZERO, there is zero articulation.
Trunks stands (squats?) at about 4 ¼ inches tall.
Accessories:
Trunks comes with a single accessory:
- A dandy stand
This stand holds onto Trunks very well and looks nice, it replicating a ground type environment. Adds a good bit to the presence of the overall figure.
Trunks’s energy furls can also be removed by simply pulling them out of their keyed slots on his back. He looks equally good with or without the energy, and I’m glad it was an option to remove them.
There are gaps left on his back from where the energy connects, but these aren’t terribly unsightly. Seeing as how they are all concentrated on the back, I really have no problem with them.
Gimmicks:
The point of a Figaurts ZERO is to serve as an immovable companion piece to your other Figuarts. It shares the same scale, paint and sculpt depth, and presence of a figuarts.
He does this well and looks good with your other DBZ Figuarts; he will not look out of place.
Closing Remarks:
Figuarts ZERO SS Trunks is a solid piece. He looks good, feels good, and does his job well by being and in scale and equivalently colored and detail companion piece. By this fact alone, however, he seems rather superfluous. There is already an SHFiguarts Trunks that looks and feels just like this one except it moves. Why on Earth you’d spend money on the immobile piece instead of the actual toy befuddles me. It’s a good figure, but for near the equivalent price you can get the one that moves.
I say do that instead.
Under its own merits, Figuarts ZERO Trunks is a cool and good piece, but it’s deemed rather unneeded, in my opinion. If you just love Trunks, then this won’t disappoint; but if you gotta pick only one, stick with the Figuarts.
