Diamond Select was on a roll in 2020, making toys from some of my favorite (and overlooked) franchises. Avatar, Tron and THE BLACK HOLE!
The Black Hole is a criminally underrated movie, and is one of my Top 5 movies of all time. It's a shame that there aren't more toys of it. That is, until Diamond Select released these bad boys.
As with the Tron toys, there are two versions - a regular release and a Walgreen's release. The Walgreen's version has fewer accessories and no parts for the diorama.
Diamond Select's package is oversized and annoying. It's not resealable, so it needs to be destroyed to get the figure out. At least it looks good.
Maximillian is a BEAST at about 9" tall, not including the stand. The evil menace comes through wonderfully - there is no questioning whose side he's on. This is THE BEST Maximillian toy to date. It's not perfect, but it's pretty great.
One complaint is the stand. The disc that the stand rests on is 7 inches across, making it near impossible to fit on a tight shelf. And that is 7" across in all directions. Luckily, Maximillian rests on his feet without the stand just fine.
Some fans have complained that he is a bit on the chonky side. I disagree. I will agree with fans that the silver weathering on the figure is unnecessary. I'm not sure why Diamond Select added this, as Max doesn't have it in the movie.
Articulation is actually pretty great. He's poseable in more ways than I believe he was in the movie. Each bank of arms rotates at the shoulders, and each arm has a hinge at the base and mid point.
One set of arms has the removable blades. Three sets are included - closed, open and spinning.
Lightning effect parts are included for use with the other arms.
The leg flaps move up and down, and the legs splay out side to side.
The waist can rotate.
If you want to get crazy, you can even do things like this:
Probably the coolest accessory is the variant head. If you look inside, you can see the eyes of Dr. Reinhart, as he inhabits the body of Maximillian in hell. I'm not kidding, if you haven't seen this movie, you need to.
I'm just so excited these exist, I almost want to forgive them for the travesty that was the Tron figures.
Each set comes with parts to build a diorama of a section of the bridge of the Cygnus. You'll need both sets to complete it.
It makes me unnaturally happy to finally have great, accurate toys from one of my favorite movies.
