Yep, that bad. (Did you see how I struggled to transform him in those two vids above...?)

The surface details are perhaps the only compensation for your $45, and about 95% of those in robot mode are not screen-accurate. And on top of that, Power-Up OP doesn't look/function like he does in the movie.

Surprisingly disappointing...

Unfortunately I guess that making "real-world" vehicles out of toys leaves designers between a rock and a hard place. They can't even futz around with the robot mode to make it work, because the robot mode already was designed by someone else!

I almost wonder whether they shouldn't have said "forget the movie robot, we'll take a vague stab at it but that's it. If they want a movie-accurate robot then we'll make a non-transforming action figure."

That's exactly why- in the

That's exactly why- in the Power-Up OP vid above- I suggested the detachable framework/magical armor design: it allows for a wide variety of modification from a toy design standpoint, and the satisfaction of the combo as seen on-screen. And, the best part about that framework design would be you wouldn't have to detach anything to change him between vehicle & robot mode!

To be fair, though, TakaraTomy and Hasbro really ramped up their transformations and on-screen-accuracy for the RotF line (with a few notable exceptions).
Take Voyager-class Mixmaster, whom I'm working on next- looks gorgeous, but the poseability and Attack Mode are crap. But, he has virtually no kibble in robot mode, and it's amazing how clean and tight things are when transforming him.

The New REAL Jetfire

I'm deeply grateful for your honest opinions about this toy EVA. I really sorry that the link-up w/ RotF Prime was a failure. I want to be on the full record that I NEVER supported this movie franchise before I've defected from the transfandom forums b/c Hollywood is operated by a consortium of immature, sleazy morons. I've felt that TF is better off as another anime movie and ONLY another anime movie, but IT HASN'T and we're stuck with this morally depraved form of embarrasment. Despite my bitter contempt with Hasbro & Hollywood, I've found some (but not all) of the movie toyline impressive. I applaud the toy engineering team @ TakaraTomy for their hardwork & ingenuity despite uncomfortable circumstances. My only wish is for them to recontinue the Masterpiece/Binaltech/Universe projects that's been sabotaged by this movie thing.

As far as this ROTF Jetfire's concerned... the only thing that I love about this guy is his SR-71A Blackbird jet mode. That's it. I just find that robot mode silly and generic. That's not Jetfire...it can't be. Different continuity means NOTHING without quality, style, balance, and real robot asthetics. That old chicken-geyser will NEVER be the new real Jetfire to me.

But this cool, alien-bot will always be the new REAL Jetfire to me.

LoL @ Armored Messiah

LoL @ Armored Messiah joke

Wow- you don't find any of the RotF toys appealing enough to buy? I didn't like a lot of what they did in the movie, but I got a dozen of them now with aims to get a few more.

4 Words for you EVA: N.E.S.T.

Okay EVA, I can't stand to see a fellow robot fan/reviewer down, so I'll give some GOOD NEWS to cheer you up.

I got 4 words in an anacronym for you my friend: N.E.S.T.

I am very EXCITED to get my hands on some RotF N.E.S.T. toys this month.

1)NEST Dirge (kick-ass)
2)NEST Skystalker (sweeet)
3)NEST Brawn (bad-ass mecha)
4)NEST Mindwipe (kick-ass jetbot)
5)NEST Lockdown (OMG!)
6)NEST Ironhide
7)NEST Bludgeon

I'm going to repeat No. 7... NEST RD-20 BLUDGEON is the most attractive, samurai-bot I have ever seen in this line, and I'm DEFINITELY going to buy 2 copies of him.

I mean...that is just sweet real-robot asthetics there.

That sweeet-sweeet armor!
That sweeet-sweeet-sweeet sword & weapons!
That sweeet-sweeet-sweeet-sweeeeet anime mecha prescence in all it's glory!

Oh man...what a homage to it's G1 Pretender counterpart that I thought would never see the light of day. It's beautiful, just beautiful.

As you can see, I am not without heart and enthusiasm about these sorts. My tastes are pretty fair and balanced. My personal appeal for TF robots is if they look like sweet, bad-ass, anime-like (ala Hajime Katoki's Gundam-style/Kawamori's Armored Core style, etc.) mechas, I'll definitely add them on to my collection.

-R78

PS: I was being serious about Armored Messiah as the new REAL Jetfire b/c it's Shoji Kawamori. Yeah, yeah I know he's not the series creator for The Transformers, but he was one of it's founders in designing Diaclones for sure. I'm just saying it weren't for him there would be no Jetfire. Just giving the credit where it's due.

I was depressed just that

I was depressed just that one day of filming, but Voy Mixmaster brought me back up quite a bit. (Other than a P.O.S. Attack Mode and finicky arms, he's gonna be one of my RotF favorites!)
And as I type this, I have a freshly-opened Animated Swoop standing next to me, waiting to begin his review. ^_^

By your list:

  • I already planned to
  • I already planned to
  • I'm still debating/waiting to see how he turns out
  • I already planned to
  • not a big fan of his design even though I like the character from Animated, leaning towards no
  • I don't need a third Voy Ironhide, my Premium is sufficient for now
  • I'm still debating/waiting to see how he turns out

I agree about the jet mode

The shame of the whole thing is that the jet mode is probably the beat-looking and most-accurate toy SR-71 I've ever seen!

Yeah- it is pretty gorgeous.

Yeah- it is pretty gorgeous. I'm also a fan of the downright-evil appearance of the SR-71 (well... most real stealth vehicles), so to see it used as a kibble-former is rather depressing and disrespectful.

On the other hand, I seriously doubt and version of RotF Jetfire in vehicle mode would have lacked in kibble; I just wish it hadn't been so blatant here!

They should make an SR-71 that transforms like the Elgerzorene.

Good question! I'd like to know that myself- he's an Autobot, yet he has Decepticon markings all over him and red eyes.

To be fair, he had Decepticon markings in the movie as well, and we only had his word that he changed his activation code...

Decepticon Logo

So first off, I actually like this toy quite a lot, but I don't care about the combination with Optimus and have zero interest in getting that toy. The rubber belts and those sticking out pieces on the chest are kind of annoying, but I might remove them. I really like the grumpy old manbot and his robocane and I don't really mind the junk under the jet. The jet looks really cool.

Now, the Decepticon logo. In the old '80s cartoon and in the '80s comic Skyfire and Jetfire both started out as a Decepticon and switched sides. This is not the first Jetfire toy with a Decepticon logo but was still packaged as an Autobot (that'd be G2 Jetfire). This is an homage to the TV show, specifically, since Skyfire was super old and was frozen in the ice on Earth way before the Autobot's spaceship crashed on earth.

So what was Wheelie's excuse then?

(BTW, I'm never getting that Dlx toy, hardly screen-accurate in either mode! And robot mode is thin as a board... with wheels.)

No Majik- Just Paint!

Well... there should be plenty of time for some Autobots to perform re-paints over Decepticon markings considering all of their other skills- no?

Wheelie kept his Decepticon symbols too, didn't he? I don't have the toy.

I don't know where it is on

I don't know where it is on him in the movie, but on the toy there's a little lever under his chest that lets you switch between Decepticon and Autobot symbols at will. This is billed as his "Mech Alive" gimmick, but I dis that.

Behind-the-scenes materials suggest that Wheelie's blown-out left eye makes him an Autobot since it turns, um... blue, in the movie. So, we'll see if they make the other eye match in Bayformers-3 or change it back to red.

I'm an unabashed Prime

I'm an unabashed Prime fanboy, and have yet to buy the new Leader Prime or Jetfire. Bought three different Leader Primes from the first movie, so want to wait until I'm sure it's the one I'll want. If the main selling point is combination with this lousy toy based on an annoying character, I'll wait until clearance prices, for sure.

Ooh- you haven't gotten

Ooh- you haven't gotten the new OP yet? Then definitely go for the Jp-exclusive Buster OP! You get better/cleaner paint apps, a mouth instead of the face shield, and especially the transformable rifle!
I heard there is a Jp-exclusive 2-pack with Buster OP and Jetfire (who has more movie-accurate coloring than my toy does).

And, no- Leader OP 2.0 is not at a loss if you don't get Jetfire here; it is very-much a stand-alone!

(Rumor has it Buster OP will come to the US, but that is very un-confirmed at this time.)

Buster OP RA-24 Japanese Buster Prime

Dude... You can buy Buster Prime at BBTS... check the site. I think he's to expensive for a Transformer where all they did was add chromea gun and details he should of had in the first round of the toy. Want him but don't like that price.

I dislike the mouth on the Roadbuster stand alone. Just my personal preference. The two pack has the face shield, but is quite a bit more than I plan to spend. Holding out for a US Roadbuster, hopefully.

Why the hell would you want

Why the hell would you want Optimus with a mouth?

And as far as Wheelie's look being changed for TF3? My guess is that Wheelie,Skids,Mudflap,Jolt, and the silver Corvette guy (forget his name) will never be seen again and we'll get an all new bunch of robots led by Prime and Bumblebee.

The only decent SR71 robot :

The only decent SR71 robot : Snoop, from Gobots. Google him.

It's not the aesthetic, which do Jetfire in, but the electronics and the Prime combo requirement.

I am ashamed that I paid full

I am ashamed that I paid full retail price for Jetfire... He's not fun to transform, and accuracy in any mode is laughable at best. The instructions don't even bother to tell you that Prime's 'shoulder blades' (the sleeper section pieces on his back) rest against either side of Jetfire's body. (that's why the turbines are on those hinged bars, but the jet kibble can't be secured in any way now) Nor do they tell you that the nose kibble actually tabs onto the triangular bits near Prime's shoulders.

What would have been good was a transforming Jetfire under Leader class, if they wanted him as such so badly, that doesn't combine with Optimus, and a separate Jetpower Optimus set where you get the parts to form the combination but don't convert into a jet or robot. Thing is, TakaraTomy was doing the latter for the original Voyager OP...until they canceled it.

At least Legends Devastator is a decent little guy. Not really any more pose-able than a typical PR/SS mecha, but he's fun at least.

Yeah, HasTak set Takashi Kunihiro an impossible task

Bad enough that he had to reserve space for AA-powered electronics (which limited what could be done with Optimus' torso), but to try and make them combinable, when the combination wasn't a traditional one (with Jetfire being ripped apart and all) and half of Jetfire's mass was unused? It wasn't doable. But because HasTak mandated These Toys Must Do This We Don't Care About Reality, he had to do it and it really screwed Jetfire over. If not for that, Jetfire could have had actually-transforming leg engines and "feathering" of the Blackbird wings like in the movie. But nooooo, HasTak insisted and thus both Jetfire and the powerup mode are disappointing. I intend to get a Jetfire and see what I can do to fix him..

Also, Ratchet is obviously good for something, seeing as Bumblebee is walking again by the end of the first movie.
