Tetsujin 28 VS Black Ox Set

Review by JoshB
This is my Tetsujin 28.
I never watched Gigantor as a kid. I don't know how it escaped my notice, but it was before my time. So, as a result, I don't have really any nostalgia for the old pot-bellied T28, as cool as it is. I can appreciate the design and they have made some great toys of it, but it's not my Tetsujin 28.
No, the first Tetsujin I remember was that massive Godaikin Tetsujin. Originally released by Popy as the SG-01 Chokinzoku Tetsujin 28, the Godaikin Tetsujin taunted me from the toy aisles. Actually, it taunted my by hardly ever being around. I remember seeing it maybe once or twice in stores, and those memories are hazy at best.
Regardless - I've always loved this version of Tetsujin 28 best. His design comes from the 1980 version Tetsujin 28 which actually did air in the states in the 90s.

In 2009, Bandai released two different versions of th GX-44 Soul of Chogokin Tetsujin 28. The basic set was the GX-44 which just included the Tetsujin 28. What I will be reviewing here today is the GX-44S set which includes both Tetsujin 28 and Black Ox. You can only get Black Ox with this set.
Tetsijin 28 VS Black Ox is available at BetaToys.com
The box is your standard SOC fare, with both figures packed securely in a styrofoam tray. A plastic tray contains the accessories, and a cardboard box contains the stands.
Both figures are pretty much ready to go right out of the package. Which is good, because these things are meant to be played with.
Tetsujin 28
T28 is reasonably tall at 18cm tall and is mostly metal. I'd say the only thing not metal here is the head, and hands. It's heavy for sure.
The first thing you will notice about T28 is the articulation. Specifically, how insanely articulated he is. This is the new gold standard for chogokin articulation. The head is on a ball joint but at the neck so it just looks fantastic from any angle.
Shoulders are ball joints, elbows are double joints, hands are removable. The torso has a joint mid-chest as well as at the waist.
The legs at first appear to have limited articulation, but what you have to do is pull them down a bit. The first thing that clicks out is the bottom of the crotch, and then if you keep pulling, the legs slide down a little. This little bit of room goes a long way for added movement.
The legs have a spectacular knee joint where the back panels on the lower legs fold in to allow for the leg to bend much more than normal. The feet are on ball joints, and these too can be pulled down to allow for a greater range of motion.
It appears that the T28 was the test of the new articulation we are going to see in the upcoming Mazinger Z. It has the same elbows, chest joint and collapsing leg joints. I thought I didn't need another Mazinger, but if that's as cool as T28, I'm sold.
There aren't many gimmicks with T28 but there are a few accessories worth mentioning.
Tetsujin 28 can fly by replacing the head with an alternate head that can look up when flying, replacing the hands, and adding on the rocket backpack. The backpack is held in place with a magnet, and pushing down on it activates spring loaded wings.
Also included are two miniature figurines of the boy Shotaro, his vehicle the clipper, a small helper robot called Zero Hachi (08) and a large control briefcase called the Vision Controller.
The Vision Controller can open up and it unfolds automatically. The handle can fold out or be stowed away flat against the case.
The Tetsujin alone is a great buy and well worth the money. But is it worth getting the Black Ox set?
The first thing you notice about Black Ox is the lack of diecast in the lower legs. The rest of the figure has just as much metal as T28, but you can't help but feel a little let down with the metal content. You also don't get the cool folding panels on the back of the legs like you do with T28.
That being said - I still think Black Ox is pretty cool. He is the same size as Tetsujin 28, has the same build, but is a completely unique toy. He even has the cool double jointed elbows.
Aside from variant hands - Black Ox only has two gimmicks. On the regular head, the mouth can open and close. With the alternate head, you have the option of displaying it with or without its faceplate.
Each robot has a display stand with plugs for all their respective parts. Its the same stand, with different nameplates and a different front insert.
So yeah, in conclusion I really enjoyed this set much more than I thought I would, largely due to the crazy articulation in T-28. He was on my desk for about a week prior to this review and I had a blast trying all kinds of poses with him. And, if you get the set with both, you can re-enact some awesome battle scenes.

On a side note, this review is the first shot with my new Olympus SP-590UZ. I had to pick up a new camera at Yodobashi in Tokyo when the old Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom got a fuzzy spot in the middle of the lens that I can't get out. So far I like the camera, but I am still getting used to it. Let me know what you think of the shots, and if you notice any difference.

26 comments postedI had trouble locating Tetsujin 28 as well and only saw it once at one of the Keller Model Kit Swap meet at the Buena Park hotel. It was a $100.00, it was either buy that and get one item for the day or get a bunch of items I settled on the later. I don't regret the choice but it would have been cool to own it.
I think I'm buying my first SOC today, Minerva. I've resisted so long but I just can't help it anymore! Dave's glass case full of Chogokins & Kaiju inspired me to get my glass-case out of the garage and fill it up with my collection. And SOC is my kind of Hi-brow toy. I'm going to be doing that this weekend.
This is a great set and I have a model kit of this version of Tetsujin 28 that I'm building for CDX, but I prefer the 50's version more!

I DID IT!!!!! I TOOK THE SOC PLUNGE!!!!!!
What have I done......another collection to complete......ha ha
Minerva looks cool and sexy, I know its one of the more inexpensive SOC so I know it's going to lack what the other releases have. But I love Mazinger and his female battle partners, looking forward to getting the rest!
BTW Has Minerva not been reviewed on CDX?
Cheers!

Wow, you got inspired to by some SOCs because of me?!?! That's pretty funny considering I've sold just about all of mine (the only die-casts I have left are die-cast kaiju). And oddly, it doesn't look like there is a review of the original Minerva here. Looks like you've just volunteered for the job.. ;)

I envy you opening your first SOC, even if it's Minerva. My first was a Maz Lady too, Dianan. I was totally floored by the weight and quality, so you can imagine what what it was like to move onto other entries (Dancouga is still great, so get him if you can).
Photos look great, Josh! I was on the fence on this set, but I need it now. This site is dangerous.
I like the SOC Minerva, especially the one in purple with the wings. I have that one and Diana from the Mazinger Angel series.
The review makes me want the Tetsujin more but my tastes lately have been with the SPEC line mostly.
I disagree. She's gorgeous! Lacking in accessories, yes, but looks amazing on display and feels great to hold. Anyway, great review and made me re-think my planned purchase of the GX-24M...
I take back what I said Josh, I know when I was fiddling with T-28 at CDX HQ I was kinda hating on it a little because of the double joints. After reading your review and seeing the pics of the cool poses it can do I'm sold. I'm still gonna hate a little on Black Ox cuz' of the lack of die-cast in the legs. It just felt way too light.

Yes Dave, it has less to do with the particular line of SOC but the vibe your case sets off with a mixed assortment of Chogokin & kaiju. I'm just one of those collectors that has to have everything and I had to really settle on what new Japanese toy I wanted to collect. If you look at all my reviews about 90% are toys I bought when I was a kid, SOC is something that can get my fix and grow with.
I mean look at this release that is being reviewed. Beautiful! It's not the Godaikin version but I'll be more than happy with it when I get it. Also I know I had to make a choice soon as SOC is still around 50 stock releases ( Not counting recolored, etc), after 100 that would be a problem.
I'm looking forward to the reviewing Minerva.
Thanks mates!

130-150 for two SOCs doesn't seem so bad at all.
Josh you are so cruel.....what took you so long to make this review,i was dying to see a review for it >_<.
Anyway i will buy these Tetsujin 28 and Black Ox next month for sure!! (took me two months too save my money for it v_v) and to think that my first SOC would be this!? I think im gonna cry when i open them out the box...Given that these guys were my childhood memories!!
Question: are the name plates for their stand metal or plastic?
Haha sorry it took so long, I am still catching up after Japan!. The stand plates are plastic.

Does the blue on 28 look as nice in person as it does in the pictures?

Yes it does. Definitely!
Hmmm something missing from these toys....the eye lighting gimmick from the older tetsujin and black ox,why didnt they gave them this gimmick? thats pretty lame of bandai....
No light-up eyes because of the swapping heads.

I saw this set in NYC at toy tokyo over Xmas. Really wanted to pick it up but they wanted 180$. They're prices are satanic at the store. 200$+ for the DX Reideen.
When I heard that BANDAI was ready to issue two versions of Tetsujin 28 namely Tetsujin 28 and Black OX sold separately and/or as a set, I had to make a quick decision - which version to buy.
Living in a small house, and a room (which looks more like a warehouse)chock full of chogokin boxes I simply couldn't buy another large boxed Soul of Chogokin so I opted sadly for the GX-44 not the GX-44S.
The GX-44 Tetsujin 28 is a masterpiece in its own right and a vey welcome addition to my ever-growing collection of Japanese Super Robots.
My only grumble about T28 are his hands - which are just blue plastic! However, if you look closer at Bandai's advertisements of T28 and at photos from last year's Shizuoka Hobby Show or Tokyo Toy Show you will notice that Bandai's Tetsujin 28 had his fists spray painted in the very same bright metallic blue as the rest of his body!!!!!!!!!!!
That would have made Tetsujin 28 more complete, more metal-lic and less toylike.
Besides, Josh I think you either forgot or didn't notice that the Vision Controller has telescopic antennae which can be extended.
All in all a very good review and I didn't notice any difference in the use of cameras.
I didn't notice - thanks!

That vision controller is a work of art in its own right. Impeccable design.
Much agree, it's kind of understated but I've been thinking about that controller almost more the the Chogokin!

The collapsing leg joints are a pretty impressive idea, and well implemented.
man I got my box set in El Salvador central america were chogokins go for 125$ a piece. Gagantor is a nice toy but really disapointed in Black Ox. That what made me start collecting Revoltech for their price and Aoshima for their metal content.
