For some reason I like these

For some reason I like these late 80's/early 90's magical styled robots like this. Jewels and swords with ordinate details.

This was another one of those shows that I watched when I was a kid through Korea rental video tapes. I never remembered the name because of how long it was, so I was really excited to see that it was getting the Robot Spirits treatment. Super awesome design, I hope that they cover some of the others in the future as well.

I saw Granzort (the show that proceeded Wataru) through a Korean channel that was airing it.

Funny enough, Granzort's

Funny enough, Granzort's another one that I saw in addition to Wataru. There was also a show about castle-looking robots fighting each other. I STILL don't know the name of that one.

Probably not, but Ryu Night

Probably not, but Ryu Night perhaps? Now you have me all psyched up to figure out what it was.

Hrm, no not that one. Robot

Hrm, no not that one. Robot may not be the right word. It literally was like a giant yellow castle made of stone, that also was a giant robot-looking thing. I just honestly have no idea what it was.

Pure Magic

A SD robot in a fantasy world with floating islands... I just want it! I mean, there's something magical about these animes and games of the 90s that feature magic and a world of floating islands that have rivers that flow and create a waterfall to other floating islands, and so on...

Man, how I wish they, someday, do a Robot Damashii Twinbee. That game's pure magic...

40 bucks isn't a steal, but it isn't too bad. I might consider this, which is saying something since I haven't bought ANY Japanese robot toy in a year or so.

2 questions:
Any metal (I doubt it,since it's only 40 bucks) ?
How tall is it? I don't have one of those orange alien guys so the comparison pic doesn't help me.

Its priced about right for a high quality collectible figure. Its about 4" tall or 5" if you count the spike on his head which sounds small but hes a wide fellow. Mass wise he doesn't feel small cause of his tubbiness. Unfortunately, but not unlike the other RS releases, he has no diecast. It would be nice to get a nice ES Gokin of this guy, I would surely get one

I might pick it up when I have the money to spare.

One thing though,I'm watching this on Youtube as I type this, and granted I didn't start in the beginning and it isn't subbed, but Wataru's mech looks nothing like this toy. Maybe he got an upgrade at some point in the series.

I have to say any of the mecha in this show would make good toys. They just have the coolest "kind of SD but not quite" look. to them. They'd make good gashapon or kinkeshi or what have you.

I don't know enough about

I don't know enough about Wataru to say, but there are 3 series and 3 OVA's, so an upgrade seems plausible.

Theres 3 series. Mashin

Theres 3 series. Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru, Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru 2 and Chou Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru. Each show starts the main character off with a new version of Ryujinmaru. The one released as Robot Spirits version is the one from the first series though you are correct he does gets an upgrade but during series one he always summons Ryujinmaru first then powers up into Ryuohmaru.

In Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru 2 he starts off as 'Ryujinmaru (same name but still upgraded with wings for flight) and he gains the 'Space World' Power up for a few episodes but permanantly powers up into Ryuseimaru for the last 20 or so episodes.

In Chou Mashin Eiyuuden he starts off as 'Mashin' Ryujinmaru but gains 6 forms throught the series! Shishi (Lion) Ryujinmaru, Hohoh (Phoenix) Ryujinmaru, Geko (Moonlit) ryujimaru, Byakko (White Tiger) Ryujinmaru, Kenoh (Sword King) Ryujinmaru and Chou Mashin Ryujinmaru.

I would love for them to do Ryuseimaru but its looking unlikely seeing as they've stalled already.
