EVA-01 Rebuild of Evangelion Ver.

Review by JoshB
The EVA-01 Rebuild of Evangelion Ver. Revoltech is a completely new toy, sharing nothing with the original aside from it being the same character.
The new Evangelion movie “Rebuild of Evangelion” re-introduces the Eva franchise to a new legion of fans. The movie is basically a prettied up version of the TV show, with added CG effects and updated designs for the Eva’s and Angels.
At first glance this EVA doesn’t look a whole lot different from its predecessor, but upon closer inspection it becomes clear that this is a very different toy.
For one, this version is taller and sleeker. The paint application is different and even key design areas like the chest have been redesigned. The green pads on the chest are actually separate pieces and attached to the shoulder joint. The waist joint connects differently from the original, relying on a third panel to cover the Revoltech joint.
The hips still use swivel joints, but the knees are now double jointed, giving the Unit -01 an astounding range of motion.
The toy comes with so many accessories that they actually had to add a second tray in front of the figure.
Included are:
- G-type shoulder armor & scope
- shoulder armor with progressive knife
- optional head
- progressive knife with effect part
- umbilical cable
- four pairs of optional hands
- display base
The optional shoulder parts are placed differently based on which parts you are replacing. If you want to add the G-type shoulder armor & scope you need to remove the entire shoulder assembly and replace it with the new one. The scope is articulated with 3 Revoltech joints and can be positioned around the face.
The shoulder armor with progressive knife goes on the left shoulder and the knife is not removable. There is also a third shoulder that has a small panel that pops out – I’m not sure what the purpose of this panel is.
The progressive knife is kind of cool because it comes with a small piece of plastic that resembles an explosion at the tip.
As with all EVA’s, it comes with an umbilical power cord. The plug attaches to the back and the cord is actually stiff wire, which makes for another support when posing.
The stand is your basic Revoltech stand.
I know most of us don’t really need another EVA-01 toy, but I think it is different enough that it may be worth purchasing. If you don’t already have a small EVA army – pick it up! It’s great!

The third shoulder panel is meant to represent how it looks after the Prog. Knife's been removed. You'll notice the hole's shaped like where the Prog. Knife's swivel would be.

Just picked this guy up and I must admit, I'm a little disappointed. The fact that the panels on the shoulder blades/fins/whatever they are are very loose and tend to pop off with very little prompting.
While I realize that this is probably not a problem with each and every figure I can't help but feel that this problem isn't at all uncommon with this figure.
Other than that it's a solid little figure. I look forward to seeing what the rest of the Rebuild of Evangelion figures look like.
This was my very first Revoltech figure. I somehow managed to severely damage the Revoltech joint/arm part of the display stand, and after numerous feeble attempts at repair, had to discard all but the base. The left shoulder panel on mine is also annoyingly loose.
Other than that, I've still managed to enjoy it. I bet I could enjoy almost anything related to Evangelion...I haven't even seen the first "Rebuild" movie, but this isn't really radically different from the design of EVA-01 in general, so it works.
I'm looking to purchase one of these Eva-01's, but I am concerned with the lack of weapon accessories on the newer release of the figure. The older Eva-01 has more weapons, and I could care less about the shoulder accessories on the Rebuild Eva-01. It's further complicated by the fact that I can get older Eva-01 for 9 dollars as opposed to the 20 for rebuild 01. Sure, I COULD purchase eva-00 and use its weapons for Eva-01, but purchasing both is a bit out of my price range and I don't really fancy eva-00.
Is rebuild Eva-01 much better in terms of articulation, so as to offset the loss of accessories? Will there be another release of 01 that comes with more weapons or is otherwise worth waiting for? What do you guys suggest I should do?
Off the top of my head, and not owning one, I'd say that articulation is the same. Otherwise, looks like paint apps, and some minor re-sculps (particularly the head and shoulder wings) are the main differences.
As to waiting for a new release, I doubt that would happen. With the exception of special-edition glow-in-the-dark or all-clear, these Revoltech don't seem to get a lot of repaints and reissues. If they make one figure, they're not gonna go back and completely redesign it unless they have a really good reason. "EVA 1.0-..." was one of those big reasons, but I seriously doubt they'd put out a new figure each time a new movie came out!

The only difference in the way of articulation is that the original had typical knees, while this one has double joints.
Note: I don't own the original (though I certainly want it!), but the pictures suffice.
WHAT!? THIS EVA HAVE A DOUBLE JONTS IN THE KNEES!? i didnt know that...are u sure? i might buy one........
I have it, and the knees are double joints. Look at the knee of the leg up in the air here

You can see the ball part of the top joint, and below that the plastic bridge connecting that joint to the lower joint.
may i ask why you prefer the original over the rebuild version?
Even though I have the Rebuild Unit 00 and thus have the cool swords, the pistol would be a neat accessory to have. Also, while the differences between the molds are not radical, it IS the version that was in the show... though maybe that's just the growing completist in me coming out. It seems like a slightly different shade of purple, too.
Essentially, I really want that pistol. And because I love Evangelion so much and Unit 01 is awesome, I've gotta have it. But for you to decide which one to get, it depends on what exactly you're looking for...
I was orginally going to make this Revoltech figure my first, but I've decided to instead get EVA Unit 03 and 02, instead merely because I like both of the units and the fact they both come with a multitude of various accessories that can be intercahnged between the tw really bought me, and the fact having two unit's instead of one, means a variety of mid-combat poses between the two.
I would've liked to get EVA Unit 01 as my first unit, but it's lack of accessories has completely turned my mind against it, I just think it needs one gun, I mean whats the point of having a G-type shoulder armor & scope if the figure doesn't even come with a gun?
Of course; it's to make money. You have to buy the Operation Yashima set to get the gun for Unit 01 and the shield for Unit 02. That's just business for ya, ha.
That is true, but nonetheless now that I have both my units, I will probably be buying this, along with EVA Unit-00, now that I have a vast amount of accessories.
