Starcrow
Review by JoshB
Earlier, we talked about Starzinger a bit with the Queen Cosmos review, and now we are going to talk about the individual characters vehicles, starting with the Starcrow.
The Starcrow was our hero Jan Coogo’s ship. This ship lived in the front center dome on the Cosmo Queen. It was not uncommon for Jan Coogo to actually stand on top of his ship while flying through space, battling enemies.
The ship is sleek and black, perhaps why it’s named Starcrow. The hull is diecast metal, while the rest is various kinds of plastic.
The main gimmick with the ship is that it separates into two parts. Rolling wheels on the bottom of each section allows the front section to go far when the yellow button on the back is pressed. You can then take the front section and actually add it to the top of the back section, making a different configuration.
At the end of each wingtip is a firing missile. Push the yellow button, and, if you are not careful, you’ll shoot your eye out.
Closer to the body of the ship are two long yellow guns. These can be moved in and out, but do not fire.
The last neat gimmick is the cockpit, with a small Jan Coogo figure.
The small figure is molded in one color, and has limited articulation: just enough to fit in the seat.
Oh yeah, that glass windshield, that can flip backwards.
The box… well, it's a classic Popy box. Gorgeous.
Overall, the toy has a great deal of play value, but is probably my least favorite of the Starzinger diecasts. You'll see why as we review the others...

4 comments postedJANCOOGO is Goku the monkey in Chinese/Japanese mythology who has a decorative headband, flies on a cloud/ship and uses a cudgel. I loved watching STARZINGER when I was young although it is not one of my favoutite anime.
I loved that show,
And from what I remember the shorter form of the ship was used when the main guy standed on it.
I am patiently waiting for someone in all these modern reissues to take on this series...but all we keep getting are mazinger re-releases...maybe it is like Miracleman (marvelman) and caught up in ligation???
How tall is the pilot compared to a Pheydon?
