Captain Harlock

Captain Harlock (宇宙海賊キャプテンハーロック, Uchū Kaizoku Kyaputen Hārokku, lit. Space Pirate Captain Harlock, also transliterated Captain Herlock) is the main character of several anime and manga series by writer/artist Leiji Matsumoto.

Harlock is an archetypical Romantic Matsumoto hero, a space pirate with a rugged-individualist philosophy of life. He is shown with a patch over one eye, a scar across his cheek, carrying a great black cape, and frequently holding either a laser-rapier or a glass of wine. Like many of Matsumoto's lead characters, he is the embodiment of the grand individualist, noble as he is taciturn, rebellious, stoically fighting against totalitarian regimes, whether they be earthborn or alien. He has often been compared to Ragnar Danneskjöld, the freebooter of Atlas Shrugged, in character and appearance as well as many of the gallant Yakuza roles played by Takakura Ken. When asked by crewmember Tadashi Daiba for whom Harlock is fighting, Harlock's reply is "I fight for no one's sake. I only fight for something deep in my heart". Harlock's character seems to be the embodiment of many Western and Japanese conceptions of the heroic as an ideal and this has contributed to his immense popularity worldwide.

Doraemon

Doraemon (ドラえもん, Doraemon) by Hiroshi Fujimoto, pen name Fujiko F. Fujio, is a Japanese manga about a robotic cat, Doraemon, who has travelled back in time from the future to aid a schoolboy, Nobita Nobi.

Doraemon was originally sent back in time by Nobita's great-great grandson, Sewashi, in order that his descendants reap the benefits of Nobita's success one day rather than be burdened by the considerable financial debts which his incompetence has led them to suffer in the original timeline.

The stories are formulaic, usually focussed on the main character of the story, Nobita Nobi. Doraemon possesses a four-dimensional pocket from which he can produce all manner of futuristic tools, gadgets and playthings from a future department store. Nobita Nobi, a poor athlete and scholar, who is weak-willed, lazy and beset by the local bullies, inevitably comes crying to Doraemon for some device to gain revenge, fix his problems, often involving academic failure, or show up the local rich boy (Suneo) who parades his acquisitions to arouse Nobita's jealousy. Nobita usually goes too far, and, despite Doraemon's best intentions and the technology of the 22nd century, gets into deeper trouble than before. Failing that, Nobita's friends steal the gadgets and end up misusing them. However, at the end of the day, there's usually retribution to the characters who end up misusing them, and a moral lesson is taught.

Gaiking was notable for being perhaps the only show of its kind (besides GoShogun) to take place in real places outside of Japan, and for being the first Super Robot series to have a mobile carrier for the chief robots.

The story chronicled the battle between the crew of the semi-transformable carrier Daikyu Maryuu (also called the Kargosaur) and the Super Robot Gaiking against an invading race of aliens called the Zelons, whose home planet is facing destruction by a black hole. Notable aspects of the series include the dinosaur-based designs of the Daikyu Maryuu and its support machines and the use of part of the carrier to form the main robot. The robot Gaiking was piloted by a baseball star named Sanshiro Tsuwabuki (Sanshiro's name was changed to Aries Astonopolis for the English version of the show with the carrier being called the "Great Space Dragon", a literal translation of "Daikuu Maryuu"). It is most easily distinguished from other mecha by its skull-shaped golden torso and its golden horns. (Wikipedia)

GoBots

Challenge of the GoBots also known as Mighty Machine Men is an American animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, based on the toy-line released from Tonka. Most of the toys were imported from the Japanese toy line Machine Robo.

The initial Gobots toys were re-releases from the Japanese Machine Robo series, sold on blister cards. Other toys from the Machine Robo DX were also released as ‘Super Gobots’. Tonka also created a number of original toys for the line, such as the Command Center, Thruster attack ship and the robot dinosaur, Zod. The initial Gobots were released in 1984.

The Gobots were divided into two factions, the Guardians and the Renegades. Unlike in the Transformers toy line, there was no clear divide between the two factions; the toys had no identifying insignias or markings to indicate their allegiance. Likewise, there was no commonality of design within each faction. The only “theme” to a side was that anything that turned into a “monstrous” looking robot or vehicle was a Renegade.

Godzilla

Godzilla (ゴジラ - Gojira) is a giant Japanese movie monster (kaiju) first seen in the 1954 Japanese tokusatsu film Gojira, produced by Toho Film Company Ltd. To date, Toho has produced 28 Godzilla films. In 1998 TriStar Pictures produced a nominal remake of the original set in contemporary New York city. A new film is slated to be produced by Advanced Audiovisual Productions.

Godzilla is characterized as amphibious, nearly indestructible and highly regenerative, and breathing a sort of nuclear fire or "heat-ray". The earliest two Godzilla films visually and thematically evoke the US bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the aftermath and human damage of Godzilla's attacks. Although much of Godzilla's significance as an anti-war symbol has been lost in the transition to pop culture, the nuclear breath remains as a visual vestige of the creature's early Cold War politics. In this era, the Voltron force was in charge of protecting the planet Arus (ruled by Princess Allura) from the evil King Zarkon, his son Lotor, and the witch Hagar, who would create huge Robeasts to terrorise the people of Arus. (This storyline is similar to those of the Toei Super Sentai shows, which formed the basis for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.) Despite being the first of the two robots to appear on American television, Golion's version of Voltron was regarded as Voltron III in the toyline, most likely because of it's distance from Earth (adapted from Wikipedia)

The story centers on Tetsuya Tsurugi, an orphan raised by none other than Kenzo Kabuto, the once thought dead father of Mazinger Z pilot Koji Kabuto. Kenzo Kabuto is the creator of the new, improved version of Mazinger, made by refining his father's Chogokin Z (Super Alloy Z) into a new, stronger form, designed to fight against humanity's new enemy, the Mikenese Empire, led by the Great General of Darkness and his army of robots. Kenzo gives the Great Mazinger to Tetsuya to pilot, who is accompanied by a new token girl, Jun Hono (an orphan half Japanese, half African-American girl), in her female robot Venus A. With the original Mazinger destroyed, Kouji went to America to study space travel and left Japan's defense in the hands of Tetsuya and the Fortress of Science. Both Great Mazinger's and Tetsuya's training are completed just in time to come to Kouji's aid as the Mycene Battle Beasts overwhelm Mazinger Z. Tetsuya battles the Mycene Battle Beasts and even their mighty generals, cumulating in a bitter final battle with the Mycene's military leader, Ankoku Daishogun (Great General of Darkness).

Ikki Tousen ("Bakunyu" Hyper-Battle Ikki Tousen", 一騎当千 Ikkitōsen(One with the strength of a thousand)) is a 13-episode anime series which is loosely based on the manga by Yuji Shiozaki. Seven schools in the district of Kanto are constantly at war with each other, and the students within - both male and female - have become skilled fighters and constantly battle with rival schools. Their lives and fates are guided by strange jewels, called magatama, that contain the spirits and destinies of warriors from the Sangokushi period, and also change colour according to the ranking of its bearer. The ultimate purpose of each of these high-school fighters, known as Toushi, is to become stronger than all others and ascend to become the eponymous Ikki Tousen - literally translated, this means one spirit with the power of a thousand warriors. The destinies of those who wear the magatama gems, though, have repeated time and time again for the past eighteen centuries - without fail - and the carnage is immense each time around.

More than two thousand years ago, an ancient evil descended upon the land. Distraught, the people of the village sought guidance from their Emperor. Recalling the legend of the Jagun Warriors, the Emperor summoned the mythical guardians who soon appeared before him with five glowing stones. The Warriors explained that the stones contained the ultimate power necessary to conquer evil. Leaving their fate to the “Power of The Eye,” the villagers defeated the invading evil that had plagued their land. This legend has been translated today into collectible action figures and Power Eye Stones, recreating the deeds from centuries past.

Mach Go Go Go

Speed Racer is the title of an English language adaptation of the Japanese anime Mach Go Go Go which centered around automobile racing. The series is an early example of an anime becoming a successful franchise in America.

The characters and storylines originated in Japan as the manga and anime series Mach Go Go Go (マッハGoGoGo) from the anime studio Tatsunoko Productions.

Mach Go Go Go was first created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida (1933–1977) as a manga series in the 1960s and made the jump to TV as an anime series in 1967. The central character in the anime and manga was a young race car driver named Gō Mifune (三船剛 Mifune Gō). Yoshida selected the names and symbolisms in his creation very carefully. The M logo on the hood of his race car and the front of his helmet stood for his family name Mifune, an homage to Japanese film star Toshiro Mifune (and not "Mach 5" as the dub would suggest). His given name Go is also a Japanese homonym for the number 5 (the number on his race car). This is also represented by the letter G embroidered on his shirt.

Mazinger Z (マジンガーZ or マジンガー・ゼット), also known as Tranzor Z, is the name of a manga by artist Go Nagai, first published in Japan in 1972, and turned into a long-running anime television series later in the same year. The series lasted for 92 episodes, making it the longest running anime mecha series in the genre. It remains the stepping stone of the Super Robot anime genre and its influence is still felt today. The opening theme, also titled Mazinger Z, is sung by Ichiro Mizuki.

Mazinger Z is a gigantic Super Robot, constructed with a fictitious metal called Chogokin Z (in the American translation, Super-Alloy Z), which is forged from a new element mined from a reservoir found only in the sediment of Japan's Mt. Fuji. The mecha was built by Professor Juzo Kabuto as a secret weapon against the forces of evil, represented in the series by the Mechanical Beasts (mecha used for evil purposes) of Dr Hell. The latter was the German member of a Japanese archeological team, which discovered ruins of a lost pre-Grecian civilization on an island named Bardos; the civilization was loosely based on the ancient Mycenae, and was called the Mikenese Empire in the series. One of their findings was that the Mikenese used an army of steel golems about 60 to 65 feet in height (compare with the Greek legend of Talos). Finding prototypes of those golems underground which could be remote-controlled and realizing their immense power on the battlefield, Dr. Hell goes insane and has all the other scientists of his research team killed. Except for Kabuto; the lone survivor escapes to Japan and attempts to warn the world of its imminent danger. Meanwhile, Dr. Hell establishes his headquarters on a mobile island which he sails around on, and plans to use the Mechanical Beasts to become the new ruler of the world. To counter this, Kabuto constructs Mazinger Z and manages to finish it just before being killed by a bomb planted by Hell’s right-hand man, Baron Ashura. As he is dying, he manages to inform his grandson Koji Kabuto about the robot and its use. Koji becomes the robot’s pilot, and from that point on battles both the continuous mechanical monsters, and the sinister henchmen sent by Doctor Hell in every episode.

Mazinkaiser

Mazinkaiser (マジンカイザー) is an Japanese anime OVA, consisting of seven episodes, released on Japan in 1999, and based on Mazinger Z, originally from manga artist Go Nagai.

The basic plot is a re-telling of the adventures of Kouji Kabuto, pilot of the mighty Mazinger Z, the first Super Robot of anime, defender of Japan and of the Photon Energy research laboratory. He is joined by another hero, Tetsuya Tsurugi, in his Great Mazinger, along with token girl Sayaka Yumi in her female robot Aphrodite A, and comic-relief Boss and his Boss Borot. They all fight against the evil machines of Dr. Hell and his assistant, the half-man, half-woman servant Baron Ashura. This time around, however, Ashura forms an army of machines powerful enough to able to defeat both Kouji and Tetsuya, and is able to capture Mazinger and do severe damage to Great Mazinger. While Ashura and Dr. Hell plot the final attack to the Photon Laboratory, Kouji, who is missing after the battle, finds a hidden laboratory of his dead grandfather, Juuzou Kabuto. There he finds a hologram of his grandfather that tells him that the time has come to unleash the most powerful robot ever created: Mazinkaiser, so terribly powerful it can as easily be used as a lethal weapon of evil as it can be for good ("Mazinger Z gives you the power to be God or the Devil, but Mazinkaiser allows you to surpass both!"). Kouji, now piloting Mazinkaiser, arrives just as Ashura is almost on the verge of destroying the Photon lab, and defeats him. Ashura leaves, stunned and hardly believing that a new Mazinger has arrived.Wikipedia

Megazone 23

Megazone 23

Set in the future, the story of Megazone 23 was inspired by the popular anime program, Macross. In the Macross theatrical movie, Do You Remember Love? , the SDF-1 spaceship continues to broadcast (fabricated) transmissions of the idol singer Lynn Minmei during her period of captivity with the Zentradi in order to prevent the public from being aware of her disappearance. The creators of the Megazone anime video decided that they would increase the ignorance of their own spaceship's population, as they would not only be duped into idolizing a computer-generated singer, but would not even realize that they were on a spaceship.

The story revolves around a delinquent motorcyclist named Shogo Yahagi, who lives in what appears to be contemporary (1980s) Japan. His life is carefree and he spends his time riding around, working at McDonalds, and flirting with girls. After nearly running over a dancer named Yui Takanaka, he apologizes and manages to befriend her. Later on he unknowingly goes on a double date with his friend Mori and Yui's two roommates, Mai Yumekano and Tomomi Murashita. His life is changed abruptly when he bumps into an old friend, Shinji Nakagawa, shows him a military prototype motorcycle, the Garland. Soon after, mysterious agents arrive to apprehend him, and chaos ensues. Shogo escapes with the Garland.

The Mighty Orbots (マイティオーボッツ) is a cartoon series that aired on Saturday mornings in the United States. Mighty Orbots was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and Intermedia Entertainment for both the United States and Japan (where it was never broadcast but was released on home video) as opposed to being simply a translated Japanese import as were so many other shows of its kind. The show lasted only a single season, due to a lawsuit between the show's creators and Tonka who accused them of basing the cartoon on their GoBots toyline, as well as the similarity to GoBots' tagline ("Mighty vehicles, mighty robots"). Which was somewhat ridiculous since they hadn't even been domestically released to be sold at the time. The 13 episodes aired on ABC. (Wikipedia

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン, Shin Seiki Evangerion) is a Japanese animated television series, begun in 1995, directed and written by Hideaki Anno, and produced by Gainax. It takes place in 2015, fifteen years after the catastrophic Second Impact, reportedly caused by a meteor strike, which wiped out half of Earth's population and tilted its axis. Just as humanity is finishing its recovery from this disaster, Tokyo-3 began suffering attacks by strange monsters referred to as Angels. Conventional weapons are useless against the Angels, and the only known defense against them are the biomechanical mecha created by the paramilitary organization NERV, the Evangelions (Evas).

Although the series starts as a regular mecha anime, the focus tends to shift from action to flashbacks and analyses of the primary characters, particularly the main character Shinji Ikari. The creator/director, Hideaki Anno, suffered from a long period of depression prior to creating Evangelion; much of the show is based on his own experiences in dealing with depression and in psychoanalytic theory he learned from his psychotherapy. As a result, characters in the anime display a variety of mood disorders and problems with emotional health, especially depression, trauma, and separation anxiety disorder. (Wikipedia)

New Getter Robo

In 2004, director Jun Kawagoe produced a new OVA called New Getter Robo (Shin Getta Robo 新・ゲッターロボ), this time being a re-telling of the Getter Robo story. In this new story humanity is under attack by demonic creatures called Oni. As in the original stories, Dr. Saotome creates a series of Getter-Ray-powered robots to fight the monsters, culminating the creation of Getter Robo. Both the robot and the Getter Team were redesigned for the new series. Getter Robo is more detailed and mechanical-looking than its earlier forms, and all three pilots - Ryoma, Hayato, and a combination of Musashi and Benkei's archetypes named "Benkei Musashibou" - are more violent and antiheroic. Ryoma is now a street fighter, Hayato a bloodthirsty, psychotic gang leader, and Benkei a hedonistic and gluttonous apprentice monk. This remake is considered truer to the original story and spirit of Getter Robo (it was especially more faithful to the original manga version) than the previous remakes and sequels.

Omega Boost

Omega Boost is a three dimensional shmup developed by Polyphony Digital (Makers of the famed Gran Turismo racing series) for the Sony PlayStation.

In the game, players take control of the Omega Boost, a giant robot or mecha in the style of famous Japanese Anime such as Mobile Suit Gundam or The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. The player is charged with travelling back in time to stop an artificial intelligence called Alpha Core from altering ENIAC, the first computer, and thus making itself more powerful in the future. The gameplay takes place on rails, meaning you must travel where the game takes you in the same style as titles like Nintendo's Star Fox or Sega's Panzer Dragoon. However, this rail-shooter element does not hamper your freedom to fly where you choose. On some stages, you have complete control of Omega Boost, specifically areas where you are in Planet ETA's atmosphere. Other stages limit you in terms of speed (falling through the timeshaft).

The "Boost" part of the mech's name comes from Omega Boost's booster pack, allowing the player to move in any direction and circle strafe enemies with a scanning and lock-on feature. Omega Boost also learns the Viper Boost maneuver once it is levelled up. Viper Boost, when engaged, will cause Omega Boost to glow blue as it tears through enemies on screen. Destroying enemies will cause the gauge to refill incrementally. However, the game can be completed without ever using Viper Boost. If Viper Boost is used, your final ranking will have "Pixy" added onto the title, proving you used the attack during your play.
