This Rats got class! The Disney/Pixar film Ratatouille hits theaters in late May. This pair of play sets by Mattel is part of a modest line of toys made for the film.

If you watched the last Pixar DVD release, CARS, you saw the trailer for this film. It’s a Pixar tradition to preview their upcoming theatrical releases with each DVD release. Remy is a rat that has a taste for fine French food. He moves into a restaurant, lots of knives get thrown at him. That’s about all I know about the movie now.

Shaped like a fancy copper soup kettle, the Kitchen Chaos playset is Remy’s world. The 11” tall pot opens up to show three rooms in a kitchen. Sewer Splashdown is shaped like a trashcan. It opens up to show a sewer environment. This set is also 11” tall.

Shipped to retailers in 2-pack cases, these playsets can be used separately, but of course if you want even one, you’ll just have to get both. Only some assembly is required. Opening up the sets, you’ll find a number of small parts. This is a consideration if your child tends to loose small parts.

Each set comes with a small 1” rat figure from the movie. Kitchen ChaosSewer Splashdown gets Django. These playsets are small, and the included figures are the only ones available at this time that fit the sets. Mattel has a line of Ratatouille Movie Moments characters, and they could play in these sets, but they will be too large to go down the slides.

These playsets have no electronics, but there are several moving parts. Kitchen Chaos gets a ladder, a revolving potholder that Remy can ride. Turning the potholder also makes a spoon go up and down, and Remy can ride that too. There is a slide Remy can go down, landing him in a juicer. The juicer then takes Remy for a ride to the bottom of the set. There is a spoon diving platform. Put Remy on the spoon, and you can launch him into space! Finally, a trap door opens and long broom lets Remy climb into the pot.

Sewer Splashdown has moving parts as well. A drink umbrella attached to small pully functions as a lift for Django. There is a large valve Django can ride on. A ladder forms a teeter-totter. Attach the umbrella to the ice tray to make a boat. Django has a sewer slide, and a few places to hide in the playset.

The two sets connect together to form a tall environment; the kitchen set goes on top of the sewer, naturally. The sets can also be closed, and come with lids.
