CollectionDX - New Getter Robo

In 2004, director Jun Kawagoe produced a new OVA called New Getter Robo (Shin Getta Robo 新・ゲッターロボ), this time being a re-telling of the Getter Robo story. In this new story humanity is under attack by demonic creatures called Oni. As in the original stories, Dr. Saotome creates a series of Getter-Ray-powered robots to fight the monsters, culminating the creation of Getter Robo. Both the robot and the Getter Team were redesigned for the new series. Getter Robo is more detailed and mechanical-looking than its earlier forms, and all three pilots - Ryoma, Hayato, and a combination of Musashi and Benkei's archetypes named "Benkei Musashibou" - are more violent and antiheroic. Ryoma is now a street fighter, Hayato a bloodthirsty, psychotic gang leader, and Benkei a hedonistic and gluttonous apprentice monk. This remake is considered truer to the original story and spirit of Getter Robo (it was especially more faithful to the original manga version) than the previous remakes and sequels. 13 episodes were produced for this OVA.(Wikipedia)

In this series all the Getter Robo combinations get another makeover, updating them to modern times while still keeping the getter aesthetic.

The Revoltech Series No. 08 Super Robot Type Shin Getter 2 (リボルテックシリーズNo.08 スーパーロボタイプ新ゲッター2) is the second Revoltech figure released from Shin Getter Robo. It’s a character you don’t see too often in toy form, and it is a joy to have it as part of the Revoltech Series.

Getter 2 is built for speed, and it is evident in the design. Clean lines and a sleek profile help Getter 2 scream through the sky.

Getter 2 has no accessories aside from a stand. But when you have a giant drill for one hand and a giant claw for another, do you really need any? The claw hand rotates and each claw is articulated. The drill moves, and is sharp as hell.

Instead of legs, the Getter 3 has three treads to move around on. While the treads here are just solid molded plastic, the Revoltech joints add in an extra level of articulation that you wouldn’t expect with a figure like this.:

How many different Getter Robo series are there now? For most of us old-school fans there is only Getter Robo and Getter Robo G (aka Starvengers from Force 5). There have been several incarnations of Getter Robo since then, including Shin Getter, New Getter, Neo Getter… The list goes on. And with all these new anime series we have also gotten new toys. The thing is, all of the toys have been of the same. Damn. Character.

Getter 1.

Well, the cool cats at Kaiyodo have done what we have waited so long for – they made toys of the other Getters! The Revoltech series has not only done Getter 1 from New Getter Robo, but they have made Getter 2 and 3 as well! It’s about time those other Getter modes got some love.

The Getter 3 Revoltech toy is a really unique thing.

Revoltech Series No. 017 Super Robot Type Shin Getter 3

Instead of legs, the Getter 3 has three treads to move around on. While the treads here are just solid molded plastic, the Revoltech joints add in an extra level of articulation that you wouldn’t expect with a figure like this.

Getter 3 has 12 or 14 Revoltech joints, depending on how he is displayed. The head, chest, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and feet all have Revoltech joints.

In terms of accessories, Getter 3 does not have many, but what it has is pretty cool. The figure comes with one set of extra hands, and additional arm sections. You can add the arm section at the shoulder and it gives the appearance that Getter 3 can stretch his arms out to great lengths. This also gives the figure two extra Revoltech joints, hence the 14 joints.

The legs are pretty interesting. The rear leg is fixed and attached to the body, and acts as the pivot point that supports the other two legs. Each leg has a Revoltech joint at the hip, knee and then at the front of the tread where it meets the leg. They are challenging to pose nicely, and you can’t really do a lot with them, but they look damn cool.

The figure can also go into a sort of battle tank mode, where it gets crouched down and points its shoulder missile launchers forward.

This is a pretty cool figure, but I really wish the treads worked. I understand at a 1,900 yen price point this isn’t realistic, but it would have been cool.

Now all I need is Getter 2 to complete the set! Santa, are you listening?

Getter 1 comes from the latest New Getter Robo anime, yet another re-telling of the Getter Robo mythologies.

The toy is made out of PVC and ABS plastic. I think the main reason people didn’t get into this figure is the lack of Revoltech Joints – there are only 4 Revoltech joints on the whole figure – the rest are monoshaft joints.

Still, the toy is solid and durable, a welcome departure from previous Kaiyodo offerings. There are at least 19 points of articulation, and Getter 1 comes with a few accessories

2 piece stand

Getter Tomahawk

Wing attachments

2 closed fists

2 grabbing hands

2 flying hands

Waist Beam

The hands pop in and out with ease, but are not so loose that you have to worry about losing them. The grabbing hands can hold the Getter Tomahawk securely. I actually prefer this kind of connection method, rather than the Revoltech joints that the later figures in the line use. These are much easier to change.

The wing attachments slide over the shorter wings on Getter 1’s back to give it an extended look for flying. I think they look great, although getting them to stay on can be tricky. Each wing is supposed to go on a specific side, so make sure the indents on the wing line up to the ones on the figure.

Don’t let the size or the lack of Revoltech joints turn you off. This is a great figure, and is now even cooler with the addition of Getter 2 and Getter 3 to the line.
