CollectionDX - Terror of Mechagodzilla

Terror of Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラの逆襲, Mekagojira no Gyakushū, Mechagodzilla's Counterattack), also known as The Terror of Godzilla in the original American theatrical release, is a 1975 tokusatsu kaiju film. The 15th film in Toho's Godzilla series, it was directed by Ishiro Honda with special effects by Teruyoshi Nakano. Akira Ifukube provides the music score. The movie was written by Yukiko Takayama, who was the second female writer for a Godzilla film (the first was Kazue Shiba, who wrote for 1967's Son of Godzilla).
The monsters featured in this film are Godzilla, Mechagodzilla and a new monster, Titanosaurus.
This was the last movie in the original Godzilla series before The Return of Godzilla began a new series of Godzilla films in 1984. It is also the last Godzilla movie to feature the creature as a hero for Japan and the world. Because of the crash of Japanese cinema and the Energy crisis of the mid-to-late 1970s (which had also affected some television shows), the Godzilla film series was forced to go into hibernation. As a result, this film had the lowest attendance figures of all the movies in the series. (Wikipedia)

This version of Mechagodzilla comes from the movie, Terror of Mechagodzilla, released in 1975. It is slightly different than the previous Mechagodzilla 1974 Chogokin. The most notable differences are:

Darker color scheme

Different chest and waist

Longer finger missiles

MG2 on the arm instead of MG

Mechagodzilla features a cool rotating head gimmick. Press the button on his back to rotate the head with a clicking sound.

The toy comes with a few different accessories:

Alternate flying head

Alternate robot brain

Alternate hands

Piece of space titanium

Mechagodzilla comes packed in a nice styrofoam tray. However this version does not have a book-style box that the Mechagodzilla 1974 had.

The toy itself is very cool. The head and jaw are poseable, and the arms and legs have a full range of motion. Diecast is restricted to the body, upper arms, and parts of the legs. It's a pretty heavy piece. You can remove the head and replace it with either a flying head, or a robot brain. In addition, the whole upper neck assembly is removable, leaving a large cavity at the top of the figure.

The alternate hands look like missiles have been fired

This appears to be a much better toy than the previous Mechagodzilla. Check out this Japanese fans comparison between the two versions.

The only thing missing from this toy is firing gimmicks. Would it kill Bandai to bring back firing missiles? Otherwise, its a great toy.

"A picture's worth a thousand words." This saying may be most appropriate about vinyl kaiju than perhaps any other line of toys, the reason being that they don't DO anything at all. They just look awesome. More awesome in some cases than others. And if there is a case of a vinyl toy looking more awesome than this one, I've yet to see it.

M-1's Titanosaurus is a masterpiece, plain and simple. I could tell you that it's 9.5" tall or that it has 6 points of articulation. I could tell you it's a great sculpt with an unbelievable paint job (especially around the eyes and teeth). I could tell you it comes bagged with a header card. I'll simply tell you that this is one of my favorite toys.

Surprisingly, I actually held this toy in my hands about three years before owning it and wasn't very impressed. My friend who showed it to me was incredulous and now I understand why. It's simply a matter of changing tastes, I suppose.

The specimen pictured here is a re-release. The first version came with a mini MechaGodzilla. At least 6 other versions in various paint sprays exist.

:
