CollectionDX - Microman

The Japanese toy company Takara made a toy series in 1974 called Microman that was a miniature spin off of their Henshin-Cyborg1 figure. Interestingly, this figure was a modified doll produced in recycled molds originally used to produce Hasbro toy company's G.I.Joe doll. The Microman toys were made in a smaller 3.75 inch figure that had a similar level of articulation to the 12 inch GIJoe. These smaller toys had the advantage of being cheaper to produce as well as allowing a play pattern that included vehicles and accessories that the larger size prevented for cost reasons.
The story of the Microman toys in the US is a very tangled web of toy lines and companies. When the toys were imported into the US they were divided into different lines by different US companies. In the US these toy lines became very popular in their own right. Two popular US toy lines to come from the Microman toy molds. The first is the 3.75 inch action figures and some accessories imported by the Mego Corporation that where known in the United States as Micronauts. The other US toy line adapted from Microman started when some smaller transforming vehicles were imported to the US by Hasbro and combined with another, similar Japanese toy line known as Diaclone to become know as Transformers.
Micro Machine Series 011 - Spy Heli with Magne Power Microman Kirk is part of the Microman Magne Power line. Released in 1999, the Magne Power toys all featured a magnetic gimmick.

Spy Heli came with an exclusive Microman Magne Power figure, Kirk. Kirk could ride on the Spy Heli in its various modes. The figure is fine, but I never liked the magnet arm - it looks odd and has no articulation.

The great thing about this set is that it comes with a Ramen Noodle cup (called Spicy Noodle - Pepper). Since Micromen are meant to me actual size, the figure is in scale with the ramen cup. The Spy Heli can be stored inside the cup, or can grasp on to the top of the cup. The cup can also be used as a sort of secret base.

The Spy Heli can transform from helicopter mode to turret mode. It can also be used as a sort of jetpack for the Magne Power Robotman.

This version you see here is the Korean version, released by Sonokong Toys. Sonokong is the official Korean licensor for Takara Toys, so this toy is the exact same toy as the Japanese release; it just uses box packaging instead of a blister card.
:

Gachaman (Or Gatchaman) was released as part of the Microman Tatsunoko Fight line in 2003. All of the figures in this line were based on the Tatsunoko Fight video game.

I picked up this guy during my visit to Tokyo in 2003. Yes, I am just getting around to reviewing it now. He was bought at the Toys R Us in Odaiba, right off the shelf. It was a good feeling to buy a Japanese toy in a Japanese toy store.

Gachaman is technically part of the Microman line, although he has little in common with other Micromen. It uses a newer body style and does not have the traditional chromed head. It comes with tons of accessories, including variant hands, a sword, 2 birdarangs, communicator watch and a cape, which comes in several parts. One notable omission is a stand. The stand shown in this review is from Acrodita, one of the Microman Acroyer Ladies.

The figure is insanely articulated, like most Microman. At 4" inches tall, it has more points of articulation than most 12" figures. It can stand pretty well on its own, but having a stand is helpful.

So what's not to like? I few things, but nothing major. The first issue I have is with the cape. The main part of the cape plugs into a hole in the figure back, then the neck part plugs into that. The tips of the cape have to snap on as well. Unfortunately, none of these connections are secure, so the cape falls apart at the slightest touch. Also, when I first got this toy in 2003, I was able to swap out the fists with ease. Now, 2 years later, I cannot push the fists in all the way once replaced. I don't know why.

Diamond Comic Distributors brought these to the USA in 2003, and they were pretty inexpensive - around $7 bucks. That's not a lot for a pretty good figure. I wouldn't have paid to have it imported, but if you see one cheap, go for it.

AcroDita's full name is Microman Acroyear Lady - AL-12 AcroDita, and she is part of the Microman 2004 line. She was part of a series of Microman that were imported to the USA by Diamond Comics Distributors in 2004. From the official Diamond press release:

Imported from Japan! The legendary Micronauts/Microman figure line from Takara continues with this new female line for 2004! Figures introduced in this series include: Acroyear ladies Acrodita and Acrovena and Microman women Commander and Ninja. Each figure:

stands 4" tall

features an amazing 30 points of articulation

comes with chrome parts, weapons, and accessories

     include five variant hands

comes in original Japanese blister card packaging

AcroDita is molded in a translucent amber plastic with burgundy paint highlights. All of her weapons, as well as her head, are chrome plated. The weapons are modular, meaning you can attach a sai, spiked ball, or blade to the end of the staff, or use them separately. Her back armor has a clip that can hold weapons when not in use. She also features my favorite toy accessory - chains.

I never really collected Microman, mainly because I found it so hard to display them. Well, AcroDita solves that by coming with a translucent base that you can attach the figure to. Apparently all the recent Microman toys come with these.

While the armor looks really cool, it is kind of awkward and tends to fall off when AcroDita is being handled. The chest plate tends to fall off the most. You have to remove some body parts to apply some armor parts.

Overall, very cool, and a great gateway figure if you were thinking about getting into Microman.

:

Demon Acroyer stands 9 cm tall and comes with a BB launching ball fist, as

Demon Acroyer uses a ball joint method for articulation. the result is an

production costs these were molded into one piece. The resulting ankle is awkward
  and fragile.

:
