Toynami unveils the Beta Fighter Prototype!

Toynami had a good booth, with the life size stand up of the Alpha Fighter. The thing we were really excited about was the Beta Fighter. The Beta Fighter comes from the show Robotech: The Next Generation (Mospeada to you otaku). It is a ship that docks to the back of the Alpha Fighter. The original Gakken Beta Fighter is a thing of legend, and only exists in prototype form. Fans have been clamoring for this release since the announcement of the Masterpiece Alphas. Let's hope it sees production!

Wheaty Wheat produces various artist's designs as toys in many mediums. Most of the toys produced by Wheaty Wheat are simply designs. For example, The Urbanites has a loose story based around the characters shown here. Future characters will be created as well.

At the con Joyride had a few prototypes on display from wave 4; a Red Spartan with sniper rifle, the Master Chief, and the ODST. The ODST is a non game figure. It's a re-imagining of the Spartan armor used for a S.W.A.T. trooper. For the next few waves the trend will be to have 3 figures with one vehicle. The Spartans (in this round wearing red armor) will come in multiple variants. They will sport different emblems on the shoulders and back just like in the online version of the game. Now they just need to make a white Spartan with a red Viking helmet so I can accurately represent my online self at the office.

Con exclusive Active Camouflage Master Chief.

He comes armed with a shotgun, and Covenent sword. I usually don't like translucent variants because it's often a cheap ploy to get more out of the mold, and often doesn't make sense with the characters. However in game Active Camouflage is quite prominent. Here's hoping for an Arbiter exclusive in Active Camouflage soon.

Dave Horvath and Sun Min Kim, the creators of Uglydolls, took time to show us around and talk to us about the creation of this offbeat fan favorite.

In 2001 Dave and Sun Min created Uglodolls. They had been corresponding by letter for a few months and Dave started drawing a strange character (later becoming Wage) in each letter. Later Sun Min made a plush doll based on those drawings and named it the "ugly doll". They made about 20 and sold them to friends through the Giant Robot store in LA. After they quickly sold out they realized they needed to make more and came up with newer designs.

The Uglydolls line now sports many loveable characters and critters in roughly 10" plush. At the San Diego Comic Con they debuted the Little Uglys line; a half size line of their classic designs. The future will see color variations in the Little Uglys line and possibly in the fill size line as well. Also new are the Uglydolls vinyls produced by Critterbox.

I've seen these in stores and magazines before, and my first reaction was that this was a horrible idea and there's no way these would ever sell. When I was asked to report on these at the Con I was treating it more as work than a joy. I have to say speaking to Dave and Sun Min really turned me around. Hearing the great story of their creation, and their enthusiasm for their babies did something to me. Man, I really like these now. Give them a try, and they'll probably grow on you too.

Teen Titans, Power Rangers and More!

Nothing terribly new at the Bandai booth this year, except for the really cool Teen Titans T-Robo (now available). DICE was on display (although nothing from the next series), as well as power rangers. Toys from the next series of Power Rangers were on display, but we're not allowed to show you photos. The toys were the Japanese versions, and were likely to be modified before release anyway. The Jumbo Megazord has just been released, as has the Omega megazord. In a suprise move, Bandai has decided to release the Delta Command Megazord (the SPD base robot), but there is still no sign of the Delta Wing Megazord.

Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Scarface, James Bond, and More!

Here is a company putting out truly wonderful, source-accurate collectibles ranging from articulated 12" action figures (with rather realistic cloth costumes), to polystone busts and statues, and designer tiles (Alien vs Predator so far). Most of their statues are what they referred to as "mixed media" meaning they cast the body, but accent pieces, clothes, and other details are made with different materials such as cloth, metals, and others.

Rich and I made our way around the Sideshow's area with their PR rep asking questions, and gushing over the incredibly accurate sculpts. Here's where I should tell you that I collect Bowen Designs Marvel statues, and busts. I like them because they capture the feel of the comic art in 3D. Sideshow's sculpts look like they may start talking to you, and I wouldn't turn my back on that Dr Doom statue.

Without further ado here are the images we took

Con exclusives:

		Thor's Helmet and Hammer. We were allowed to hold this rather heavy piece with I believe is cast polystone. Major points are awarded for the inscription on Mjolnr. I'm not positive of the scale, but it's probably 1:2. Sadly, after hefting the hammer neither I, nor Rich were granted the power of Thor.
	Alien head sculpt. The top of the skull is covered with a clear cap more accurately resembling H.R. Geiger's original design.
	Ultimate Hellboy 12" action figure.
	Planet of the Apes Lawgiver statue (bloody version)

That concludes the exclusives. From here we'll look at different movie and TV properties.

	Sideshow's big news this year was their announcement of a 12" Star Wars action figure line. This is great news for people who are disappointed by Hasbro's attempts, and are afraid of the $200 price tag fro Medicom's 12" figures. When asked how much they would cost I was told it was too early to tell, but that they'd be around $80.
