This toy was released in large numbers and is among the easiest to find Popy Jumbo Machinders today.:

Kamen Rider V3 aired for 52 episodes in 1973-1974 and the Jumbo Machinder was released in 1973. It was the second figure in the line, following on the heels of Mazinger Z and this designation is actually noted on the front of the box. The box is also interesting for the fact that is shows the prototype of the toy and depicts it with a missiles launching hand, which of course it does not have.

Although it does not have a missile launcher, this Jumbo does have a few interesting features. First off, it has retractable antennae protruding from the soft vinyl head. Secondly, a white scarf is tied around a hoop on either shoulder. The only other Jumbo to feature a similar gimmick is the follow-up character, Kamen Rider X. His scarf is different, but these two are the only Popy Jumbos to have a cloth accessory. He also has a belt with a tin plated buckle on the front and a holder for what appears to be a flashlight on his hip. Now, it seems you can remove the belt, but it sure looks like a pain in the neck to do it. The only reason I could even think that you would want to do it is so that you can free the flashlight (which is otherwise trapped in place), but even if you did that, it's not like he can hold it anyway. All these parts should probably be considered purely decorative.

Both Kamen Rider Jumbos share the same mold on the hands and feet (although Kamen Rider X has holes in his hands to hold his whips.) Kamen Rider V3's chest details are molded pieces of plastic with the exception of the red stripes within the blue, which are just stickers. Pay careful attention to that if you are looking to buy one of these. It's easy to overlook a missing sticker here.

There is at least one known variation for this guy. Most specimens have a plain, unpainted back of the head, while others have silver paint extending back from the front.

Otherwise, this toy is typical of most Jumbos with removable hands (if you want to buy the missile accessory shown on the box), wheeled feet and minimal articulation. One thing to keep in mind though is that with the antennae fully extended, V3 measures 25" tall, a full inch and a half more than typical Jumbos. This could come into play if you are building a display case for your collection. Keep in mind you'll need a little more room for this guy, especially since he looks much better with the antennae out as opposed to in.

Kamen Rider V3 is a pretty nice Jumbo, but if you have big plans for your collection, it's probably one you can hold off on while you track rarer toys. Although it's not very common in the US, this guy is actually a pretty easy acquisition in Japan. Loose specimens abound and boxed ones do show up fairly regularly too. I'd say the average price for a mint in box Kamen Rider V3 Jumbo is probably something in the $800-1200, but I've seen loose ones sell closer to $300-400, maybe even lower. Unless you just desperately need to have this toy for some reason, I'd suggest you wait until you see it for the value and condition you're most comfortable with.

The least popular Mazinger Z Jumbo villain and probably the easiest to find, Spartan K5 is still a personal favorite of mine.:

Spartan K5 (スパルタンK5) appeared in episode 14 of Mazinger Z and appeared in Jumbo Machinder form in 1973 as part of Popy's second wave of Machinder villains. Other second series Machinder villains included Rokuron Q9, Green Ghost C3, and Garada K7 from Mazinger Z and Taihou Buffalo and Lenzari from Kamen Rider V3. All 6 characters were on the front of the box, which they all shared.

Collectors stand divided in their opinions of Spartan K5. It stands out from other jumbos, even other villains, due to the fact that the right arm is permanently bent at the elbow to be ready to throw his spear. Also, he has no left hand behind that shield. And since it is really the only jumbo you'll find with a beard, it's understandable to hear that some think it's a silly toy.

Personally, I've always longed for this piece. Something about the eyes, the way they look so cartoonish, has always struck a chord with me. Furthermore, when I started collecting, getting Jumbo villains seemed like a unreachable goal. At the time, they were just too rare. But Spartan was considered one of the easiest to get. So not only did I like the character, but I felt he'd be my best chance to get a villain. I missed out on a couple of specimens early and in hindsight, I'm really glad I did. It would not be long before I realized that I just had to have one complete with the spear. To me it makes a huge difference in the appearance of the toy. I think it looks a bit odd with his hand raised in position, but with nothing to throw. The problem is that getting Spartan with his spear is infinitely more difficult than finding one without it. It would take nearly 6 years before I would finally acquire the piece complete (albeit without a box).

And in case you're wondering, yes, Spartan CAN actually launch that spear through the air. It features a simple metal rod and spring mechanism very much like the one in the chest of Green Ghost C3. Pull the rod back, twist it to hold in place and load the spear before twisting the rod again to release the spring.

Spartan K5 is approximately 19" tall and the body is made out of green soft vinyl with painted details. Some areas are noticeably hand painted, like the eyes and waist. The spear and shield are made of polyethylene. You can position both arms and legs and in fact, many collectors do not realize that the right arm can be lowered. It is almost always seen in a raised position and that shoulder joint his hidden by the armor.

Like the other Jumbo villains, Spartan K5 has his name as well as copyright information etched into the bottom of his feet. The left foot says "Popy" and "Spartan K5" while the right says "Dynamic Pro" and "Toei Animation".

There's not much else to say about this toy. Like most jumbos, vinyls or vinyl jumbos, it's a simple toy that doesn't do much and whether or not you like it depends mostly on your own personal aesthetic tastes. I will say this though, if you want one and see one with a spear, I suggest you act because it might be a long wait before you see another. Spartan K5 typically sells for about $1000 loose with no spear and about $1500-2000 loose with a spear. I've never seen it for sale complete and in the box so I can't speak from experience, but something around $3000 seems likely for that.

Spartan K5, along with the legendary and impossibly rare Garada K7, appears in this Mazinger Z Jumbo Machinder commercial!

Capsule Robo G (カプセルロボＧ) was one of my first Japanese Jumbos, arriving along with Getter Poseidon from the now defunct Kuru Kuru Toys. The specimen I received was missing a few missiles, but strangely, not long afterwards, there was an auction on ebay for some. What a nice stroke of luck! It's not uncommon at all to see missiles for Jumbo Shogun Warriors or Popy Jumbos for sale, but not since have I seen loose missiles for a Nakajima Jumbo on ebay. [A quick note about the missiles. Nakajima Jumbo missiles look very much like the missiles that come with the Italian bootlegs Jumbos, such as Space Valour, but they are NOT the same. The bootleg missiles are shorter and have a wider base. What this means is that while a Nakajima missile MAY shoot out of a bootleg jumbo (It worked on my Titan, but not my Space Valour), a bootleg missile will NOT work with a Nakajima Jumbo.]

Anyway, this is a great toy and it's the only non-bootleg Jumbo to not have been based on a character from a TV show. Instead, Nakajima created the character specifically for their line of Astro Mu 5 toys, which only had an original comic book to provide backstory. This was the only character from the line to be released as a Jumbo. It would also be released as a 10" missile firing vinyl and a 3" mini vinyl, both of which are much harder to come by than the Jumbo.

Capsule Robo G is a really great toy. It combines the sheer size, majestic stance and simple colors normally associated with Jumbos, but in terms of design really harkens back to the tin robots of the 1950s. Some don't like this break with (or return to!) tradition, but I think it's really neat looking and sure stands out from the pack as a result. The design of the face alone is worth your toy dollar.

The toy comes armed with 4 working missiles launchers. Only the ones on the shoulders and hands work. The missiles in the chest are just for show/storage. They can be manually turned, but they do not shoot. I really dig the ones on the hands, always at the ready, just waiting to take on some foolish enemy.

While the toy is made primarily of polyethylene, the head, hands and missile holders on the chest are all soft vinyl. Both the head and hands can be easily removed. The head is lifted out to allow you to place an Astru Mu 5 action figure inside to pilot the robot. The head of the figure should then be able to look out of the hole in Capsule Robo's neck. The hands can come off and be replaced with accessory fists. Evidently, Nakajima planned an accessory fist for this called "Gun Hand", but I'm not sure if it was ever released. I've certainly never seen it. But fear not, the Popy fists will work just fine, too.

This toy has the standard articulation you would expect from a Jumbo and has wheels on the feet. One of the cooler ways that Nakajima set themselves apart from the pack with their Jumbos was that they also included 2 mini-vinyls with each. I typically don't actually display these with my Jumbos, instead putting them in my vinyl case. So sometimes I forget which ones came with which. These two are for Capsule Robo G.

While this is still considered one of the easier Japanese Jumbos to find, in the years since I started collecting, they seem to have become much scarcer. Back when I got mine, it seemed like they were everywhere, and always mint in box. (It was only the excitement of a Jumbo newbie, along with the prospect of combined shipping, that convinced me to get one missing parts.) But recently I've not seen nearly as many. I'm sure they are still out there, but I'm guessing the price has probably gone up (like it seems to be doing with all Jumbos unfortunately!). A typical price a few years back was around $350, but something closer to $500 seems more likely these days.

Those two, along with Mazinger Z villains Dabulas M2 and Kingdan X10 comprised the first series of Jumbo Machinder villains.

LIke all Kamen Rider V3 villains, Kame Bazooka is a cross between an animal and a man-made object. It is simply a mutated turtle with a giant bazooka on his back. "Kame" is Japanee for "Turtle", hence "Kame Bazooka" = "Turtle Bazooka". Simple enough. In the show, Kame Bazooka actually had a hydrogan bomb implanted in his body with the goal of destroying Tokyo, as well as a body augmented with a special protective alloy.

One of the first things I noticed about this toy when I got it was that the bazooka on his back is actually two separately mold pieces. I'd never seen the toy in person before and always assumed it was one solid piece. The top part turns but it honestly doesn't look any different no matter how it's positioned so it really makes no difference. If you count this as articulation, then the toy is articulated in six places. (Here, the neck, the shoulders and hips.) As with all the first series villains, Kame Bazooka was originally intended as just a store display and as such, really doesn't do anything other than look good.

Another minor point that is not always obvious is how much orange is on the bottom of his arms. You don't often see too many pictures of him with his arms raised so it may go unnoticed to the casual fan.

Once again, name and copyright information is etched into the bottom of the feet. I can't read all the kanji, but the right foot says "Popy" and "Ishinomori Productions", something I can't read, and then "Toei Company", while the left says "Kamen Rider V3 versus Destron "Mystery Man" (?) Kame Bazooka".

Kame Bazooka is 20" tall and comes in a deeper box than most Jumbos due to the size of the bazooka on his back. Note the difference in depth between his box and that of Kingdan X10.

This is a real pain if you like to display your Jumbos with the toy in front of the box like I do. Very often you'll find you simply don't have the room to do it, or it will make the display look inconsistent. Currently I can't even display this with my other villains because of the box.

Kame Bazooka is standard first series villain size, measuring in at 20" tall. Some do not like this toy because it is not a robot, but it is one of my favorite Jumbos. The green color really stands out and the subtle, but threatening claws, pointed eyes and shiny boots give it an "all business" look that really appeals to me. This is one of the easier Jumbo villains to get, maybe the easiest. It usually shows up several times a year, but rarely with the box, and often with a cracked head or some other such imperfection. Price range is about $800 on the low end, for a loose and damaged specimen and possibly as much as $3000 for a perfect MIB one. I've seen it sell for higher and lower in extreme cases, but typically it'll be about $1500 for a loose specimen in good condition.

:

Hasami Jaguar (ハサミジャガー)was one of two villains from the show Kamen Rider V3 to be released in the first series of Jumbo Machinder villains. The other was Kame Bazooka and both appeared togther in the first two episodes of the show, which aired from February 17, 1973 until February 9, 1974 on NET TV (later TV Asahi). (The other two first series Jumbo Machinder villains were Dabulas M2 and Kingdan X10.)

The villains from the TV show all combine an animal with some kind of man-made item. Hasami Jaguar is a jaguar with a giant blade on each hand and when those blades are combined, they form a giant pair of scissors. ("Hasami" is Japanese for "Scissors", hence...Hasami Jaguar = Scissors Jaguar). Hasami Jaguar was also able to transform himself into a Catholic priest as a disguise.

This toy was the first Jumbo villain I was able to get, and although he is probably my least favorite one, it was still a momentous occasion for me as I'd been wanting a villain for several years. Strangely, my next villain, Green Ghost C3, would be acquired just a week later.

Hasami Jaguar is 21.5" tall with 5 points of articulation (hips, shoulders, and neck). The left arm doesn't raise as high as the right due to the silver shoulder pad on that side. Originally, the toy included whiskers on the face, but those are very often missing from remaining specimens today, including mine unfortunately. (Sadly, I'm also missing the box.)

As with all the first series villains, Hasami Jaguar was originally intended to be a store display and is made entirely out of soft vinyl. He is at least partially handpainted and you can still see brush strokes on various parts of his body. Name and copyright information is etched into the bottom of each of his feet so that shop owners would know who to display him with. I really dont know kanji, but I do know that the left foot says "Kamen Rider V3 versus Destron "Mystery Man" (?) Hasami Jaguar" while the right foot says "Popy" and "Ishinomori Productions", something I can't read, and then "Toei Company".

Like all Jumbo Machinder villains, Hasami Jaguar is not an easy toy to get. It's probably in the middle of the pack as far as rarity among villains go. It does show up from time to time, but almost always loose and missing the whiskers. I'd say the average price for a loose one is about $1500, but I have seen it sell for around $1000 or even less. (A recent auction for one with a repaired horn finished at just under $600.) The most I've seen it sell for was about $3,400 for a perfect deadstock example. I think if I had a specimen like that, I might like the toy more. Though I'm not a huge fan of the character, it does look sharp when the paint is still shiny and perfect.

Dabulas M2 (ダブラスM2) appeared in the first two episodes of Mazinger Z, along with Garada K7. But when Popy began turning their intended store display Jumbo villains into actual product items, they decided to release Dabulas M2 along with Kingdan X10 as the only releases from Mazinger Z. (Other first series villains, Kame Bazooka and Hasami Jaguar, were from the series Kamen Rider V3.)

Popy made two major mistakes in the process. Firstly, they colored the toy completely different than it was shown in the cartoon. In the show, Dabulas M2 was predominantly green and purple, but the Jumbo Machinder is mostly silver, with areas of black, red, blue, yellow and green. In recent years, Popy's parent company Bandai has corrected this with their release of the very detailed and accurate Soul Of Chogokin rendition of the character.

The second mistake made was on the labelling of the box. Instead of saying "Dabulas M2", the packaging says "Dagulas M2"!

The box for this toy is extremely difficult to get, and I actually found the specimen pictured here on Yahoo!Japan auctions listed as "Dagulas M2", instead of the proper name, loose with no toy included. Since I didn't have the toy at the time, I showed the auction to someone who I knew would need it more than I. He won the auction to complete his specimen, but later sold me both to fund a much bigger purchase. So I guess this box has sort of come full circle. Unfortunately, it's not in the best condition, but it's better than no box, and still displays well enough from one side.

As with the other Jumbo Machinder villains, Dabulas M2 has writing on his foot. "Mazinger Z vs. Kikaiju Dabulas M2" is molded into the left foot, while the right has the same copyright information as the other Mazinger villains, "Dynamic Pro", "Toei Animation" and "Popy".

Dabulas M2 is molded entirely in soft vinyl with painted colors and stands approximately 20.5 inches tall. It features articulation at the hips, shoulders, waist and both necks.

Dabulas M2 is a rare toy, but not so rare that it cannot be found. But whenever a specimen of it shows up, the competition to get it can be fierce, because the toy is so popular. The most recent auction for a MIB example fetched a final bid price of over $6000. I've heard of similar examples selling privately for approximately $7000 and $8000. But if you don't need to have the box or a specimen in perfect condition, you can get one for half that, maybe even less if you're lucky.

:

Kingdan X10 (キングダンX10) appeared in the fifth episode of Mazinger Z and was released in the first series of Jumbo Machinder villains (along with Dabulas M2, Kame Bazooka and Hasami Jaguar) in 1973. Originally intended only to be store displays, these four toys feature no firing gimmicks like the second series villains.

While all the Jumbo villain toys are notoriously hard to get, even harder to find are the boxes that they were sold in. So when this specimen appeared on Yahoo!Japan auctions a couple of years ago, I decided to go for it, even though both horns on the head were broken off and one was missing entirely. I figured it would be much easier to upgrade the toy later than it would be to find the box again.

Upon receiving the toy, I set about trying to make it displayable. I tried to fashion a new horn using some wire and magic sculpt. Now, I'll be the first to admit that I have very little artistic skill, but I think I did *fairly* good job of it. Not perfect, but ok. You don't really notice it isn't the original horn from more than a couple feet away and I've never had anyone point it out in pictures of my collection. Also, I wasn't able to find a perfect match for the original paint, but again, it looks close enough to pass.

Kingdan X10 stands approximately 21" tall and is articulated at the hips, shoulders and waist. Although the arms can be moved up and down, poseability is restricted by the shoulderpads. You can only raised the hands up to slightly above the waist.

The copyright information ("Dynamic Pro", "Toei Animation" and "Popy") is molded into the bottom of the right foot while the left foot simply says "Mazinger Z vs. Kikaiju Kingdan X10." This was so that shop keepers would know how to display the toys in their stores.

One thing I learned when I got this was that the box art is featured on BOTH sides of the box. So if one side is damaged (as is the case here) simply turn it around and display the better side.

With first series villain height, a colorful paint scheme and a stoic look on his face, Kingdan X10 is one of the more popular Jumbo Machinder villains. It is also in the mid to low end of the rarity scale. Next to Spartan K5, it's probably the easist Mazinger villain to get. (Personally, I consider it the easiest since getting a COMPLETE Spartan with the spear is exceptionally hard to do, but opinions vary.) It tends to show up a couple of times a year, but often with the horns broken. For whatever reason, I've also seen it repainted a couple times, which I've not seen with other villains. Perhaps collectors who've had to repair the horns have decided to do full restoration jobs while they were at it.

What you'll have to pay to get a Kingdan X10 will depend on condition. With both horns missing, I've seen it sell for just under $1000. Loose but complete will probably be around $1500. I've never seen one completely MIB, but I would guess $2000 or more for that condition.

:

But at some point in their fight, Mazinger Z destroyed two of the heads and Popy chose to produce the toy with only 3 heads and 2 damaged stumps depicting where the destroyed heads were.

It certainly makes for an interesting looking toy, but I can't help wonder what a jumbo with five heads would have looked like!

As if having three heads isn't enough to make a toy cool, the two heads on the side can be launched using a simple spring mechanism. Each side neck has a metal rod in it with a spring underneath. The rod curves out of the neck through a vertical slit in the side.

To load each head, you simply push the rod down and twist it into a horizontal slit in the neck, locking it into place. To fire, just push the rod back into the vertical slit and release. The spring will do the rest.

Perhaps a bit surprisingly, most specimens of this toy that can be accounted for still have both firing heads, with the notable exception of the one at the Bandai Museum in Japan, which has neither.

One thing I never knew about Rokuron Q9 was that not all three necks are the same. The two that launch the heads are made of ployethelyne while the third is molded in soft vinyl. I would much have preferred all three to be the same for aesthetic reasons, but I suppose Popy must've reasoned that poly would be more durable for the launching ones.

The poly necks are screwed into a soft vinyl base. When I bought this toy, it was recommended not to store the heads in the armed position, for fear that the constant pressure of the springs might eventually cause damage. Since the toy looks so much better with both heads on, I head briefly considered simply undoing the screws, lifting off the necks and removing the springs. Ultimately, I thought better of it and decided to simply display it with the heads resting at his feet. I just couldn't justify taking any chances with my most prized Machinder.

With his heads loaded, Rokuron Q9 stands 20.5" tall. It is articulated at the hips, shoulders and waist. Since the two heads are removable, you can also turn them to face any direction you choose. The last head is molded into place. Like all the other Machinder villains, his copyright information is etched into the bottoms of his feet, along with his name.

Rokuron has a few noteworthy aspects that aren't really important, but I think add to his appeal overall. Such as the fact that he is the only Mazinger villain to have teeth and hair. And his heads look both angry and despairing. It all adds up to a really bleak appearance. He looks less like a robot than a person who's been cursed and turned into a monster.

The Jumbo Machinder villains were broken up into 2 different series'. The first series toys each featured their own individual boxes, but the second all shared the same box image, with their names written on the side so that the buyer knew what they were getting. Not only is the second series box very appealing to the eye, it also features the images of the vilains prototypes instead of the real toys. Note that the middle head of Rokuron Q9 is higher up on the prototype than the outside heads, the exact opposite of how the toy was actually produced.

Everyone knows that Garada K7 is the most sought after Jumbo Machinder, but depending on who you ask, Rokuron Q9 may come in second. It is not as rare as Lenzari or as popular as Dabulas M2, but it combines rarity and popularity probably better than either of those. I believe at last count, 8 specimens were known to exist, 2 in the box. The cheapest I've seen it sell for was approximately $8000 for a loose specimen and the most was approximetly $13,000 for a perfect deadstock MIB one. Needless to say, this is not an easy toy to get and if the opportunity presents itself, you really need to decide how much you are willing to sacrifice for this hobby.

:

Acquiring the Green Ghost C3 Jumbo Machinder was truly a huge turning point in my toy collecting life.:

Acquiring the Green Ghost C3 Jumbo Machinder was truly a huge turning point in my toy collecting life. I'd always wanted some jumbo villains, and although he wasn't the first one I got, he was the first Mazinger Z villain I got. Even though the Kamen Rider V3 villains are very cool in their own right, I think most collectors would agree that it's the Mazinger villains that are best.

But not only is Green Ghost C3 a Mazinger Z villain (having appeared in episode 29), he's one of the most difficult to find. At the time I managed to get it, he was ranked solidly behind only Garada K7 in terms of pure rarity. Getting him was validation of all the countless hours of searching online and asking around that I'd been doing for the previous years. Getting him made me think that it was possible to get all those things I'd previously believed impossible. Getting him made me believe that these things WERE out there and that they COULD be had. I wasn't wasting my time and getting my hopes up for nothing.

Putting aside my feelings about acquiring it, the toy itself is great. Like all the Jumbo villains, it is shorter than the heroes, measuring in at just over 19" tall with articulation at the hips, waist and shoulders.

It's made almost entirely of vinyls, with the only exception being the ball launching gimmick in the chest, which is partly metal. In order to launch the ball, you pull back the metal firing pin and twist it to hold it in place. Place the ball into the front of the launcher onto the metal front, then turn the rod back and release. A spring inside the chest will propel the ball.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a specimen of this toy out there that still has the balls that it came with. (Not that I would be playing with it if I had them!) The ball launching gimmick is inappropriate anyway, since the character in the cartoon had no such weapon. And he didn't have regular hands either, he had balls that were attached to chains.

Another interesting aspect of the toy is that is shares the same arms and legs with the Garada K7 Jumbo. Because of this, neither toy had it's name written on the feet like with all the other villains. Instead, it is written on the back beneath the ball launcher and the feet has only copyright information, "Popy", "Dynanmic Pro" and "Toei Animation".

In the early 1970s, the toy company Bullmark formed, rising from the ashes of
toy maker Marusan. Bullmark quickly began churning out cheap vinyl toys from
popular shows such as Ultraman and Ultraseven.

Ultraman was also broadcast in Hawaii, and Japanese Bullmark vinyls were selling
like crazy, so Bullmark started making vinyl specifically for the Hawaii market.
These vinyls were different from their Japanese counterparts, usually in mold
or paint color, and came with a new header card for the Hawaiian market.

Today these vinyls are highly sought after, often commanding hundreds of dollars
each. But you just might get lucky and find them at yard sales and thrift shops
 in Hawaii.

I came across this Hawaii version Icarus Seijin on ebay. A guy was cleaning
out his shed in Hawaii, and listed it as Japnan Monster (his spelling). I got
 it for $3.

**Disclaimer - I am not a huge vinyl collector, so please fell free to correct
me if I got any of this wrong.
