MachinderCollectionDX defines a "machinder" as a character toy made primarily out of polyethylene (shampoo bottle material), although vinyl may also have been used in some instances. The term derives from the official Popy "Jumbo Machinder" toy line, but has become standard vocabulary for all toys from all makers that share a similar style. Although the initial toy line was a standard 60cm tall, smaller toys have also come to be accepted as part of this family and are often called "junior machinders", "super machinders" or "carnival machinders", depending on their size and/or origin.
Jumbo MachinderThe term "jumbo machinder" will be used here to define all toys that fall into the "machinder" category and that approach the size of the official "Jumbo Machinder" toy line by Popy (60cm or 23"). Typically, toys 20" or more will fall into this category. However, this category shall include toys by all makers, not just Popy.
Super MachinderThis term refers to toys that fall into the category of "machinders", but that are bigger than traditional "junior machinders", yet smaller than traditional "jumbo machinders". Few of these toys exist and they are typically 18" tall. The name derives from the "Skyzel" and "Granzel" toys from Popy. Toys that are this size, yet actually say "Jumbo Machinder" on the packaging shall still fall into the "jumbo machinder" category.
Junior MachinderThis category shall include all toys that fall under the category of "machinder", but that are smaller than the traditional size. Typically, these toys range from 10" to 16" tall. "Junior Machinder" is a made up name and no official toy line for this category exists, however, it is generally thought to have been inspired by the "Big Robo" Machine Blaster toys by Takemi.
Carnival MachinderThe term "carnival machinder" shall be used to denote any toy that falls under the "machinder" category, but is known to have been distributed as a carnival prize, rather than as a store bought item. The term "carnival machinder" is a made up name and these toys have no official designation.
