Soul of Chogokin
Soul of Chogokin (超合金魂) or SOC, is Bandai's high end line of collectable robot toys. They embody the spirit of the vintage Popy and Bandai Chogkin toys of yesteryear. These toys are not meant for children, rather they are aimed at the adult collector with disposable income, looking to recapture a bit of their youth.
The line began as Bandai was winding down their Hi-Complete Model line. The last figure in the line was meant to be Mazinger Z, but they decided to turn that prototype into the first entry into the new Soul of Chogokin line. The line debuted in 1997 and was met with critical acclaim. As the line continued, Bandai refined their process and went back and re-did certain entries in the line, resulting in R or Renewal versions.
Soul of Chogokin toys come from a variety of shows and different eras in robot history. Some of the defining characteristics are that they all have a number (GX), all have some sort of metal content, and all represent the spirit (or soul), of the original character.

The whole set is really fun, sturdy, and it has fantastic shelf presence. Combined its over a foot tall!

The last thing you or anybody else thought they needed was yet ANOTHER Mazinger Z figure. If you have been a Japanese toy collector for any amount of time you no doubt have a few in your collection already. Mazinger is an iconic figure, setting the template for super robots that exist to this day. But how many do you really need?

The sensuality of Go Nagai’s character design have never been understated in his projects over the years, from Cutey Honey to Devilman Lady if there is going to be a female character you know she will have at least an underlining but more often an obvious sensuality about her. Minerva X from Mazinger Z is such an example.

I really enjoyed this set much more than I thought I would, largely due to the crazy articulation in T-28. He was on my desk for about a week prior to this review and I had a blast trying all kinds of poses with him. And, if you get the set with both, you can re-enact some awesome battle scenes.

When Bandai announced the new Jeeg, I was skeptical. Had magnetic ball joint technology advanced that much in 30 or so years? Could this new Jeeg maintain the original gimmick while updating to modern standards?

If I had the choice to get only one Raideen set, I would get the DX set. I just love the classic look of the white limbs, and the God Face Mountain is like getting a whole additional toy.

Raideen is a good toy, but somehow I think I was hoping for something different. I guess that can’t be helped when you wait for something for so long.
