The DX Web Knight Garyun is my absolute favorite Web Diver toy, and one of the best toys in my collection. If you get only one toy from this line, get this one.:

I have to admit, I was saving the best for last. The DX Web Knight Garyun is my absolute favorite Web Diver toy, and one of the best toys in my collection. If you get only one toy from this line, get this one.

Garyun (a play on Galleon, a type of sailing ship from the 15 and 16 centuries), is a pirate ship that transforms into a dragon. That in itself is enough to make it one of my favorite toys ever. But it is actually a great toy on its own.

In Ship Mode, Garyun is about 8" long and 8" tall. The base of the ship has 4 yellow legs that extend to provide added stability. There are 2 translucent yellow missiles that fire from the front and each small black cannon actually moves.

Transforming to dragon mode is simple, with the entire base of the ship becoming a shield. The final dragon form of Garyun is tall and very evil looking. The arms and legs are fully articulated. This thing even has articulated toes and hands! You can grab the shield or the sword weapon, although the shield tends to be too heavy to grasp securely.

Garyun's head and neck are extremely poseable, aided by several joints, including an articulated lower jaw. Press the button on his back, and the skull, eyes and mouth of Garyun light up!

Garuyn can also combine with the DX Web Knight Gradion in two ways. First, you can detach the skull from the chest of Garyun and attach it to the front of Gradion. A target scope folds out of the skull. There is also a sort of docking mode where the entire Garyun toy connects to the front of Gradion. These changes are reflected in the video game when Gradion is plugged in to the television set. See the Gradion review for more information about the Web Diver game component.

I just love this toy (if you couldn't tell). I would recommend it to anyone, even if you don't care for the rest of the Web Diver line.

Basically, they share the same design aside from the head sculpts, the tail weapon and the colors. They each sport a different head for Golemon. Ortorion is magenta and Kerberion is purple.

In robot mode, The both are multi-headed dogs. Their names are derivative of characters from Greek mythology. Kerberion is a nod to Kerberos, the three headed dog who guarded Hades. Ortorion is a nod to Orthros, a two headed, serpent tailed dog. He was the guard-dog of the cattle of the giant Geryones, who was slain by Herakles. Each toy has articulated heads, legs and tails. Some of the heads have moving jaws.

Both toys have tank modes that look entirely made up. They're just plain ugly. Ortorion has a white drill with a set of cannons on top. A button activates an LED in the dome. Kerberion has a spinning saw. Neither the drill or the saw have any kind of action feature - you just spin them by hand.

In addition, both toys can become power-up weapons for Gradion. They can attach to his chest via clips.

The real selling point of Ortorion and Kerberion is that they combine to form Golemon. Basically, each robot becomes one half of the robot. Each toy has it's own head for Golemon as well. You can use one head for one version of the robot, and then turn him around, rotate the feet, switch the head, and voilà! Another robot!

Sharkon is one of my favorite DX web nights from Takara's Web Diver Line.:

Sharkon is one of my favorite DX web nights from Takara's Web Diver Line.

The main idea of Web Diver is that Gradion, the train robot, is also a video game. You can plug him in to a TV set to get 16-bit videogame fun.

The video game is pretty rudimentary. In train mode, you drive a train through a slalom course that reminds me of Zaxxon. In robot mode, you fight an enemy from across a chasm. There are also a few puzzle games and assorted screens.

But wait, there's more! You can attach other DX Web Knights to the front of Gradion, and they become power-ups. The infra-red sensor on Gradion's chest detects the other toy, and then it materializes on screen.

Sharkon gets points for just being a robot with a giant shark head. I mean, who doesn't love that? They really nailed the look of this one. One thing that gets me about the Web Diver line is that the designs are so hit-and-miss.

In robot mode, Sharkon is small, maybe 4" tall. He is pretty articulated though, and comes with 2 launching missiles, and a shield. A button activates the LED in his head. The jaw is articulated.

In vehicle mode, Sharkon is a hovercraft. The shield becomes a platform to roll the vehicle around. I was amazed as to how cheap the shield felt. You can also convert Sharkon to become a set of shoulder mounted cannons for Gradion.

I like Sharkon a lot, purely for the robot mode. If you only get a few Web Diver toys, this is one to get.

Jaguaon is basically a car that turns into a cat themed robot. In Car mode, it's about 4" long, and would fit in scale with the Transformers Car Robots line. You can insert the clear flame missiles in the rear to look like exhaust flames, or they can launch out the front. Tires are rubber.

In Robot mode, it features an arm cannon and a light up LED. Robot mode is pretty awkward. I can't place my finger on what I don't like about it, but it just looks odd.

His third mode is a cannon for the front of Gradion. The windshield becomes a target scope for Gradions' powered up cannon mode.

Honestly, this is my least-favorite of the Web Knights. It is awkward in robot mode, with odd legs that don't really seem to support the weight.:

The Phoenikon DX Web Knight transforms from a Phoenix, to a bullet train, to a weapon.:

That's where Phoenikon comes in. In his weapon form, he attaches to the chest of Gradion via 2 clips. He then becomes a giant cannon that materializes in the game.

In train mode, it's about 6 inches long, and rolls on the ground. It has a hook to connect to other train cars, but I don't think any were made, aside from Gradion, who is grossly out of scale.

In Phoenix mode, it has a 8 inch wingspan, and it can hold 2 flaming missiles on its wings. The missiles can launch from the orange cannon on its back. There is also a button that activates the LED that connects it with Gradion. Oddly, there is also a removable sword stashed in the center of the tail, but Phoenikon does not seem to have a place to grab it.

Not a bad toy, not a great toy. Good if you have Gradion to connect him to.

Takara's Web Diver series was one of the more innovative toy lines in recent memory, but that did not save the line from poor sales. The main idea of Web Diver is that Gradion, the train robot, is also a video game. You can plug him in to a TV set to get 16-bit videogame fun. The buttons on the back act as a controller. If you transform Gradion while plugged in, the screen follows along, showing you and animated transformation sequence as you move the parts.

There is a huge WOW factor in this, but that quickly fades when you realize how repetitive the game play is.

Video game component aside, Gradion is still a cool transforming robot.

He is tall, about 12 inches or so. He is made of reasonably sturdy plastic with great chrome highlights. Articulation is really good, but the toy is top heavy. The designers realized this and gave small supports behind the legs, but they are not enough. Unless Gradion is standing straight up, he falls over.

In train mode, he is actually cooler looking, if that's possible. I've never seen a train like this though. Takara?s famous attention to detail is in full effect here, with train wheels with the connected bars, just like a real train.

Gradion's biggest flaw, aside from the lame game play, is some weak structural points. The right arm joint has a tendency to snap right off. The toy can still be played with and transformed, but I have heard of many Gradion toys with this problem. Also, the screw that holds the battery compartment (under the head) tends to strip the plastic if you over-tighten it.

Gradion comes with a sword and shield, but the shield is kind of flimsy - you can't make the hand grip it tight enough to hold it into place. The sword does store neatly in both modes.

Is Gradion worth it? Well, if you like Transforming toys, or Train Robots; yes. But don't get it just for the video game aspect; you will be disappointed.
:
