Robotman reborn.

Though Microman birthed the transforming robot explosion of the eighties, it was also a casualty of that explosion. After a decade of innovation, Microman died a quiet death in 1984, never achieving the sort of international devotion enjoyed by the bowdlerized Transformers, Micronauts notwithstanding.

After lying fallow for another fifteen years, Takara resurrected and re-booted the property for the new millennium. Takara meant business, introducing three different toy lines (Replica, LED, and Magne Powers), a Manga series, an anime, and generous amounts of ancillary product. Takara typically excels at reinterpreting its older toys for a new audience. Would this massive gamble work? Ehhhhh.

Reaction to the re-boot was tepid. A new generation of kids with no recollection of the original collectively shrugged. Adult collectors were turned off by the dramatic deviations from classic Microman. The ambitious multi-media blitz limped along without generating any real enthusiasm. The millennial Microman quietly expired.

What about the toys? Exquisite, if sometimes flawed.

Robotman Dean was introduced at the tail end of the Magne Powers series. Magne Powers toys incorporated magnetic gimmicks, including magnets in the limbs of the figures as well as interchangeable parts for larger robot and monster building. These toys were like the older magnemo Micronauts on steroids, the magnetic ball construction technique was taken to wild heights.

Dean is packaged in one of my favorite boxes of all time, die-cut with an inner metallic gold sleeve. You can tell that Takara was going all out here.

On the inside: not so much. Dean’s components are twist-tied to cheap corrugated cardboard. There’s no way to store him after you’ve removed the pieces other than to just shove him in an empty box. The later Korean releases of the combiners use a white plastic tray.

The limbs and torso go together intuitively. Dean in his combined form:

You can see the pilot’s head through a clear window. Also notice that Dean’s chrome face is covered with a clear shield.

Circular metal plates provide connection points for microman figures.

In keeping with the interchangeable ethos of Microman, each limb can be reconfigured (not transformed), into a vehicle or weapon.

Further, each of these can be further broken down and reconfigured into anything you can imagine. The sheer quantity of parts is impressive. Everything breaks down into tiny, detailed pieces. Even parts which could be duplicated, like the feet, are different.

Many parts have metal balls and magnets. Furthermore, these parts are compatible with the rest of the Magne Powers toys, providing nearly endless possibilities.

As a building toy, Dean is very successful. As a figure, he’s a mixed bag. While the magnetic connections are detailed with detented sockets, the whole bot feels ramshackle.

There’s an awful lot going on. Pieces frequently fall off. But Dean is so ambitious, and so nearly great, that I forgive his short-comings and just appreciate the work that went into him.

Many of the Magne Powers combiners were later released by Sonokong and are easily obtained. Dean, for whatever reason, was not, which is a shame because he’s the coolest one.

Hello and welcome. I am Wallas, Poland's main toydude and I'll be your host today as together we take a look on the second release from the Microman Biomachine line. So sit back, relax and enjoy the presentation, as there is a lot to see today. Without any further delays, I'd like to introduce you to Microman Godoh and MachineStinger.

For some reason I can't find the pictures of the toy boxed and unopened on my hard drive, so I'll skip this part for now and will add the pictures should I find them. If anyone's interested how the box works, you can always look up BM-1 Xeku, whose review has a very big chunk of the text dedicated to the packaging.

Godoh is a standard Biomachine type body, built with the use of dimmed clear plastic and covered with shiny blue chrome, which not only makes him look great, but also gives him a sort of sky/water theme. I have him for about a year now and there is still no sign of chrome wearing off from the figure, which is a good sign.

Like all Microman and Acroyear, Godoh's face is fully chromed and sports a nice sculpture of a young man who, having long hair falling on his face and that determined angry face, looks almost like a bishonen. According to tech specs I found on Xeku's promo DVD, he is the brain of the Biomachine team. Hmm, intelligent, blue-coloured... are sure this isn't Billy from Power Rangers 5 years later? Anyway, what really strikes me on this head is that Godoh has a ponytail that is a seperate piece attached on a swivel joint. I advise any owner of this set to superglue it there, though. It's the first part you'll see falling of. I couldn't find mine for three days once ^^

Just a small size comparison with ROTF Deluxe Class Smokescreen

Godoh comes equipped with standard-issued Microman accessory pack, which includes a dual-port oval stand for poses and 5 extra pairs of PVC hand kept together nicely via plastic holder.

One of the two most important features of Micromen is their extreme poseability that only Revoltech and Figma can compete with (and having recently started collecting Revoltech, I know what I'm saying). Godoh has 30 points of articulation, including dual feet, knee, arm and wrist joints, not to mention others like ball-mounted neck and torso. As a result, he can pull off some crazy and extreme poses that are sometimes hardly achievable for other action figures. Examples below.

As I said, Biomachines are designed to have pilots and while controling the unit, Godoh rests on the main part and the tail. He “plugs in” via two handles behind the the screen/shield. He has one set of hands ideal for the job and holds on to the vehicle firmly. Overall it looks nice and works, too.

Just like Xeku's MachineMirror, MachineStinger can release some of its parts. For what purpose? Let's get Godoh and find out!

The aforementioned parts snap on to our Microman and form an additional armour for Godoh. This is officially known as BioTech mode and presumably powers the character up. I really like how each BioTech armour looks completely different. Godoh's seems to be designed as a light-weight type that doesn't affect the users mobility and speed (since Xeku's the only one who can ride his Biomachine with the armour on). I really like how the circular part previously attached to the unit's turbine snaps on the figure's back and forms a sort of a halo around his head, which makes it look like a battle-ready Saint.

I really do like how the armour has almost no effect on the toy's poseability, in fact making many of the poses even cooler then they were before.

In Xeku's case, this should be the end of the review, but Godoh differs from other Biomicroman in that his Biomachine seems to release even more parts!

As a result, Godoh puts his hands on a huge sword and a flight pack, thus entering Super BioTech mode, which in my opinion is the best thing in the entire set. It looks awesome!

With the huge double-edged sword Godoh is finally armed and can execute cool battle poses, not to mention his foes. I find the stand quite useful while doing this. If anyone wonders what happened to the ponytail, worry not, it's not missing, I detached it after BioTech mode to avoid it falling off every time I move the toy.

Super Biotech is a great feature, but it seems that there is more than that to it. You see, after you detach the cannons from the Stinger it becomes visible that the pegs on them match the small holes on the shoulderguards. The instruction remains silent on this, but it all fits together just to well to be accidental and reminds me of the easter eggs left by creators in games and on DVDs.

And so, now Godoh has both a blade and some firepower to use, which unexpectedly makes him surprisingly well-armed. The nice thing about the cannons is that you can mount them however you want, as long as at least one peg stays attached. To make the poses more credible, the cannons have both additional hinges that allow them to swing out while attached to Godoh and even there you will find some details. Wow.

I also found that if you want to, you can flip the wings down to form sort of a cape, but that's just my fiddling with the parts. I wonder what would happen if I plugged in some parts from other Biomicromen...

To sum things up, Godoh proved to be a great toy that has many interesting features that come out once you give this guy a bit of attention. If you dig that kind of action figures, you'll love him. And, he's still easily reachable via ebay :)

So... we meet again...

Sorry for not submitting anything in a while, but I didn't have time to post any Transformers-related stuff (I barely kept up with the gallery schedule on my own site) and as or Microman reviews, I was waiting until I got my hands on the whole Biomachine subgroup. And I actually did complete it few days agoso it's time to review... another toy I got on that occasion :P

Acromuzan is part of Microman 2006 line, AcroyearXADO that was a counterpart for Micro Assassin Force. Basically, Acroyear are the evil cyborgs that always mess with Micromen. I bought him along with Biomachine Godoh and Trinity from eBay because in total it would have cost me only $9 more. And guess what? He was well worth it :)

Let's start with the box. It's a typical slide-out blister card. Simple, stylish, done mostly in green and white, with several layers of graphic showing the character on the card. It's one of those cool cardboards that you can actually use as a display background for the figure. About the tray- it's nicely done, with all dedicated weapons and parts surrounding the toy, whereas standard Microman parts (extra hands and display stand) are tapeglued to the card behind the figure. The back, as always, is a guide to the toy and it's features. It seems Takara thought it's more than enough, as no manual was included honestly, I can hardly blame them, it's not a super-multi-mode transforming toy like Biomachines that you need further instructions to handle it properly).

Now let's face Acromuzan in his Naked Style mode. This is a standard '06 Micro Action Body, only with a bulk-up modification that's used very rare in the line.

Anyway, the toy is made of transparent green plastic with golden joints. Combined with white touches and light-green tattoos all over his body, Acromuzan could be a forest spirit incarnation... which is pretty close to the truth... we'll discuss this feature further on. Oh, and there's one thing that makes me laugh here. To cite Jeff Dunham's Achmed..."- So, are you a Muslim? - I don't think so. Look at my butt,
it says ". Now look at Muzan's back and spot the simillarity :P

As usual in this series, Acromuzan head is completely chromed (silver, shiny, reflecting everything around) and looks like he's a bald, monk-like man with a small beard.

So, we come to basics. First, the comparison. Just as all other toys form this series, Acromuzan is smaller than your typical Revoltech (not to mention your typical Transformers Animated Bumblebee). Fortunately, he wins against an AA battery... And, as mentioned before, he comes with 5 extra pairs of ABS-made hands, that (unlike most Kaiyodo's toys) feature an additional joint. And there's that basic Microman stand, too.

Let the great action pose show begin! Seriously, although Revoltechs have more points of articulation, I suppose it would be quite difficult for them to beat the poseability of toys like Muzan. Just imagine what could he do with a better stand...oh, did I mentioned, that compared to 2004 Micromen, Acromuzan and his buddies have additional toe articulation?

Presenting everything you get inclusive apart from the infomercial. So, what do we have here...

1 Acromuzan
1 display stand
2 pieces of torso armour
1 interchangable head/ battle helmet
6 pairs of interchangeble hands
2 pieces of shoulder armour

4 short melee weapons
1 long sword

That's a great amount of parts and believe me, they come together in few different combinations that I'll show later on.

Now, after attaching most of these things to the main body, we get a second toy in form of a samurai warrior with strong bug-like theme. I mean, there's a caterpillar crawling across the chest piece, most of the armour has small blue gems that look like bug eyes, and then those tattoos and the color of his skin, not to mention his awesome helmet... you get the idea.

You give Acromuzan some armour and he still is incredibly poseable... wow. He loses his display stand option , though. Not a problem, actually, he's quite stable on his own.

Now, what all boys (and maybe some girls, too) like- weapons! As said before, Acromuzan is equipped with 4 small melee weapons and a sword. I'll describe them one after another.

The cool part about the gold weapons is their ability to combine. Yo can use them as single tools, dual/triple weapons, or you can just pull them together into one big staff, it's really up to you, just know, that there are more than 20 possibilities of connecting these things.

Even cooler, the inner sides of the shoulder armour (double-jointed on the shoulders) have special holders to store the melee weapons when not used. This can be used either as a decoration (when pulled inward to the maximum), as another combat configuration (when pulled out), especially effective when the user makes his way through a crowd, slicing and hitting everything on his sides.

And we just can't forget about the sword, the most impressive piece in this set. It's chromed silver and fades into green near the top. It's also quite realistic, even with this unusual shape, as it sports several cracks and even some artistic carvings. And you can really tell that this is a collector-oriented toy. How? Simple. It's sharp. I mean, you won't get hurt by the edges, but the tips are a different story. I almost cut myself when played with this baby, and this goes for the rest of Acromuzan's weapons as well (this can be a royal pain when you try to disconnect the staff with sweaty hands, I assure you). Other than that, it's just a normal toy sword with all of its functions.

Well, not exactly, this sword can also be mounted atop Acromuzan's helmet, which is pretty weird configuration that I never use.

But there is one final configuration, that basically kicks butt- you combine all five weapons into one big halberd (I detached the last section to get a better setting of the toy in the picture). Pure awesomeness, even as I'm writing this review Acromuzan stands right beside me in this pose.

Ok, so it's time for some afterthoughts. Let's face it. Acromuzan is a fantastic toy with an enormous play / display value as well as a very reasonable price (about 7-8 dollars) He encouraged me to collect other Microman toys and I hope he will do the same for other people like me.

It's not an expensive toy. It's not big... Who cares? It still rocks!

Hello there, I'm Wallas, a new writer here on CDX. Before I start my review, I must tell some tech stuff. This is my first review, so please be understanding if I make some style mistakes ^^ Also, I will use the writing scheme that is common on my very own Transformers site. And finally, I may be pretty advanced in English, but it's still my second language (I come from Poland). So don't kill me if it won't sound like a native's article :) Ok, time for the fun part!

My adventure with this toy began quite accidentally- I'm a Transformer collector and although I do like Japan toys (on my PC's screen), I had never had personal contact with any of them, especially Microman toys. That is, until one day someone sold two Microman Biomachine toys on our local auction site. I wasn't quite interested but after 3 months of failing to sell those sets, the seller lowered the price to about $5 per piece. Then, out of simple curiosity, I began to consider purchasing them and made some small research on those toys. The results were promising enough for me to buy both Microman sets. Were they worth it? Read on and try to guess :P

Umm... don't expect to find any plot-related stuff here, I'm as new to this as you guys ^^ All I know that Microman are some kind of miniature cyborgs fighting with their evil counterparts...

For starters, let's check out the box. Though it may look like your standard blister-on-card package for smaller toys, this one has few very nice features. Apart from specific graphical design (I'll leave judging whether it's nice to you), from the technical side, it's far more better than, for example, TF Deluxe boxes. Especially when it comes to opening it. Usually companies like Hasbro (or even Takara with their other releases) simply glue the blister to the card, which is quite irritating for collectors who wish to preserve the box in the best possible shape. But it's not that easy when you must literally tear the box apart to reach the toy inside. Even if you decide to cut the blister with something sharp, it still doesn't look too nice. That's why I was so pleased to notice that with Microman it's completely different. Here, the blister isn't glued to the front of the card. Instead,it's side and bottom edges partly cover the back of the card and are sticked together with transparent gluetape. So, to open the toy, you simply cut the tape and slide out the card. This way you can have the box in exactly the same state as it was before opening. Brilliant! Also, unlike most US toys where figure and all it's belongings are place on a single tray filling the whole blister, here, the accessories and the main figure are stored on separate trays (and in the way that all smaller extra parts are hidden behind the figure). All the paper sheets included to the toy are hidden inside the card (it's double-layered). So in general a viewer has a feeling of order when looking at this box.

After dealing with the holding measures (which are effective but also easy to remove), we get to see Xeku, Microman included in this particular set. And I admit it, even while not being a big fan of human action figures, the look of this one simply impressed me. Very human-like proportions, nice pallete of colors, as well as simple but eye-catching design of the suit. It's purpose isn't obvious when you first look at it, but it's just a fine piece of a battle suit (Power Ranger costumes go home!).

About the colors again. Xeku is made mostly from semi-transparent dark blue plastic. We can also see many red metallic parts of the armour, accompanied by single white metallic chest part (white is also the colour of the hands). The finishing touches consist of many small, orange paint aps all over the figure, as well as silver,chromed head (this is something like a recognition sign for the whole Microman series). And I admit, it's a nice color scheme... the only problem with it is that the red tends to wear off at those pegs on shoulders...not a big deal for me, as it's not that visible, though.

Now, a close-up for the upper body. The chrome head mentioned before is nicely shaped. Not very detailed, but still you can see hair or eyebrows. Not bad for a 3 1/2 inch figure if you ask me. Also, the red chest plate is shaped after the emblem of this very character (the emblem is visible in the right upper corner of the box). Nice!

Time for another important matter in this toy aside form it's looks. Microman was always known for poseable figures, but when Takara introduced so called Full Action Body system few years ago, Microman became one of the most poseable toy series up to date and even now it's no less impressive than the Revoltech line. Just look at the example poses above. It doesn't look much until you look up the numbers- each Biomachine Microman features 30 points of articulation which include double knee and elbow joints, double shoulder ball joints and more. Plus, each figure has it's own 6 sets of interchangeable hands. This gives you a lot of possible configurations and poses. I think it would be really hard to run out of new ideas at some point.

Xeku also includes a small elliptic stand made from transparent plastic. It features two phrases - "Micro size action figure" and "Microman since 1974". That's what I call a long tradition. Aside from these, in the center of the stand there's also a carving of a Microman with his legs and arms stretched... An obvious reference to Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, but it's a very nice touch. The stand also includes two pegs- one that is compatible with Full Action Body figures (like Xeku), the other one is to make the stand work with older Microman toys. although the stand is done nicely, it's not much really. I mean, compared to standard Revoltech stands that allow you to create jumps, powerkicks or other airborne poses, this one allows you only to support ground-based setups. But maybe it's just me with my big requirements, you still can manage some nice poses anyway.

But, unlike Revoltech, Micromen actually have something like a storage for hands not used at the moment. Basically it's just a transparent connector that keeps all spare limbs together, but it sure makes losing these parts a lot harder.

Now it's time to introduce the main feature of the Biomachine sub-line, the Biomachine itself!. The main idea behind Xeku and his buddies was to provide each Microman with his own, unique set of accessories (like it does in most Microman toys). In Biomachine they take shape of futuristic vehicles like the one above. In Xeku's case it's a small combat hovercraft dubbed MachineMirror (probably due to the use of anti-gravity drive). And I must say, it looks interesting. It's shape isn't maybe obvious, but thankfully no one has yet definitely determined how a futuristic hovercraft should look like, so it's not a bad thing. Especially that the specific shape is partly due to the special feature that can be used when all four Biomachines are gathered in one place- they can combine to form a huge exo-frame robot (Bio-suit) piloted by one of the Micromen (still need the other two to perform that, so no pictures of the combined form now, sorry ^^).

But I would also like to mention other things about MachineMirror apart from it's general mold. For example, the color scheme. Basically the main structure is pure chrome, which is simply awesome. I guess the Mirror nick of this vehicle can also refer to the fact, that everything around it reflects on it's surface and it really looks good. It's almost like this machine was built from liquid metal (similar to T-1000 from Terminator 2). Add really nice level of details and you get small, but really nice piece of toy (I guess it's not hard to consider Biomachine sets as two separate toys). Another thing that catches the eye is the weaponry- MachineMirror is equipped with a medium size laser cannon , as well as four smaller blasters on sides. For a vehicle of it's size (check out the Mirror/Xeku comparison shot) it's more than enough.

Another nice (and maybe not 100% obvious) feature of MachineMirror is to drive Xeku around- it has two small handles on the back which our Microman can grab- when you fit Xeku there, he looks quite similar to a motorcycle driver. Unfortunately, it's not that easy to make it look right. First, it's hard to make Xeku grab the handles- you have to use a dedicated pair of hands and it's still hard to place them right. Then, when you're done with that, you must also pose Xeku properly (like on the picture above and believe me, it only looks easy, unless you have a third hand, of course. You see, you use one hand to hold Machinemirror, the second to adjust Microman. But when we talk about hyper-posable toys like this, usually when you adjust one part, the others changes their earlier position...so it's really a pain in the butt to do it properly. Thankfully, Takara equipped Mirror with two pegs on top. You can plug Xeku's feet there, so that he can surf/skate on his vehicle.. or do other interesting things related to transportation :).

You thought that's all this set has got? Not a chance. For you see, some parts of MachineMirror are made of the same transparent dark blue plastic as Xeku's main body. And apart from the piece on the main gun, all these parts disconnect from our hovercraft...to become Xeku's armour. This is called the BioTech mode and I simply love it. Not only does it look great (the transparency of those parts make them look as if they were taken from Tron), but also doesn't really decrease Xeku's poseability much. Plus, parts that were laser barrels before, now form a spear that can be used as Microman's personal weapon. Pure awsomeness if you ask me. Ok, time for some pics so you can get the idea how BioTech mode works :)

Finally, the partly disassembled MachineMirror can stll work as Xeku's vehicle, even if he's in BioTech mode.

And the last pic in the review, a group shot of all parts included this set. Oh, I almost forgot- the US version of this toy (like mine) has a promo DVD included. It's not much- you have all Biomachine's members short profiles, a short commercial and a two minute overview of Microman line up to Biomachine. still, if you get it for free (the set costs the same amount of money as the japan release), it's welcomed :)

To conclude, I didn't expect so much nice features form such a small and cheap toy. I highly recommend Xeku as well as other Biomachines- for someone who's new to the Microman line (like me), it's a perfect toy to get enthusiastic about these figures. An "A" score from me :)

Overall this is a great figure and part of a great line. It is a shame that Microman appears to be going on hiatus for a while...

When I sat down to do research on this figure, I had the full intention of doing a full in-depth review of the Magne Force line and its place in Microman history. However, someone beat me to it. I will tell you that even though I am not a huge Microman fan, I could not resist the urge to pick this up at my local comic store for short money. This toy is the definition of “Hand Candy”. It is, in a sense, the ultimate desk toy. You can make this guy take on any pose you can imagine.

The main gimmick with the Magneacroyear Phobos, if you couldn’t guess, is the magnetic joints. All the limbs are attached via metal balls that attach to magnets in the body. Even the top and bottom half of the body is attached by a ball. You would think that this would be fragile, and that limbs would be prone to falling off, but the toy is surprisingly sturdy. Phobos even has magnets in his feet that allow him to stick to most metal surfaces. The magnets are strong enough to hang the figure upside down.

The toy comes with your usual assortment of accessories including a multitude of variant hands, armor and weapons. Phobos also includes a stand that has metal inside so the figure stays attached to it without having to use a peg.

All of the blue armor on the figure is removable. Phobos looks a little naked without the armor on. The head features a light pipe feature that gives the eyes the illusion that they glow.

The two wheeled weapons are called Magne-Spinners. They can be held in the hands or attached to various connection points around the body. These parts can also be combined with the weapons from other Magneacroyear to form a special vehicle.

Overall this is a great figure and part of a great line. It is a shame that Microman appears to be going on hiatus for a while...

You may notice that this figure has a giant sticker across the back with TAKARA USA on it. These were part of a short lived attempt to bring Microman back to American retail stores. Takara did little to no promotion for these toys, and they ended up failing miserably. I still think with the right angle Microman figures could do well in the states, but it looks like it will be a long while until I have the opportunity to find out.

Like all Microman figures, this one is insanely articulated and comes with tons of accessories. Unfortunately, in this case this works against the figure.

Ninjalady Shina comes from the Micro Lady line, a sub-line of Microman. It’s the second in the series and uses the female full action body.

Too much articulation makes it difficult to pose, and if it wasn’t for the base, you might not be able to strike a good pose at all. It is frustrating because just when you get one limb the way you want it, another one moves out of place. The additional armor looks great, but the arm parts do not like to stay in place, and will move with the slightest touch.

Ninjalady Shina is molded is smoky clear plastic with purple paint details. The head is chrome as is with all Microman. This figure has an articulated hair section.

There are 13 accessories, 10 hands and a base included with the figure. Among the accessories are a two sided lance, 2 daggers and 2 throwing stars. The daggers can be stored on the armor parts that attach to the upper legs. The daggers attach to the wrist armor and the lance can stow on the back armor when not in use.

This figure was part of a brief push to get Microman back into US stores. These were distributed in the USA at specialty shops by Diamond Comics Distributors.

Spy Heli came with an exclusive Microman Magne Power figure, Kirk. Kirk could ride on the Spy Heli in its various modes. The figure is fine, but I never liked the magnet arm - it looks odd and has no articulation.

The great thing about this set is that it comes with a Ramen Noodle cup (called Spicy Noodle - Pepper). Since Micromen are meant to me actual size, the figure is in scale with the ramen cup. The Spy Heli can be stored inside the cup, or can grasp on to the top of the cup. The cup can also be used as a sort of secret base.

The Spy Heli can transform from helicopter mode to turret mode. It can also be used as a sort of jetpack for the Magne Power Robotman.

This version you see here is the Korean version, released by Sonokong Toys. Sonokong is the official Korean licensor for Takara Toys, so this toy is the exact same toy as the Japanese release; it just uses box packaging instead of a blister card.

This is one of 3 different colors of the regular release of Demon Acroyer. There was a wide release of a red and blue version, as well as five more (White, Black, Pink, Purple and Yellow) as exclusive toys given out at the 1999 Tokyo Toy Festival. I picked this guy up from a street cart vendor in Tokyo in 2003 for 300 yen. My guess is that they didn't sell well.

Demon Acroyer stands 9 cm tall and comes with a BB launching ball fist, as well as several magnetic points of attachment. He can attach to any metal surface, as well as to other Microman Magne Power figures.

Demon Acroyer uses a ball joint method for articulation. the result is an extremely poseable figure. It even has a waist joint. One glaring error though is the ankles. The prototype Demon Acroyer's had jointed ankles but due to production costs these were molded into one piece. The resulting ankle is awkward and fragile.
