CollectionDX - Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo

Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo (真ゲッターロボ対ネオゲッターロボ) is an anime OVA series based off the works of Go Nagai. It was released in four episodes on four DVDs from December 2000 to June 2001.
Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo draws heavily from Nagai's manga Getter Robo Go. An anime adaptation of Getter Robo Go was made in 1991, but was toned down, losing most of Nagai's famous style. Neo Getter Robo features much more faithful versions of Nagai's characters, but with a new plot and new Getter. Because of this, many consider Neo Getter Robo to be a redemption for the Getter Robo Go anime. (Wikipedia)

The toy comes from the series Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo, a four-disc Japanese OVA from 2000.

Personally I am a big fan of the Neo Getter designs. They seem right at home with the classic Getter aesthetic. I only wish we would get designs of Neo Getter 2 and 3. And while we are on the subject, where the hell is my Texas Mac Revoltech?

Neo Getter 1 Revoltech arrives courtesy of HobbyLink Japan.

So the toy is cool, as you would expect, and there are a few neat things they have done with it.

The back of the legs have collapsable panels that enables Neo Getter 1 to achieve more dynamic poses.

Neo Getter comes with a few accessories:

two pairs of optional hands

chain knuckles

Plasma Thunder

chain knuckle effect

knife holder

knife

machine gun

shoulder missile launchers

display base with joint arm

The included option hands are the standard fare - gun holding hands and open hands. The open hands have hinged wrists.

The hands can be swapped out with Chain Knuckles - Long chains attached to fired fists. The chains are fixed pose, so you are stuck in they pose they are in. To add to the effect they have added a yellow burst effect that is placed on the arm to make it look like it is firing.

The optional hands can hold either a gun or a knife, and the knife can be stored in a special holder that attaches to the back. Unfortunately, the right holding hand sits loosely in the arm and has a tendency to fall out, something I have never experienced in a Revoltech before.

The Plasma Thunder effect is a large translucent blue energy bolt that attaches to one of the open hands. The part has a peg that fits firmly into the palm of the hand.

Probably the coolest accessory is with the shoulder missile launchers. The launchers attach to the back of the figure and can actually open up. Using a small Revoltech joint as a hinge, you lift the top up and then swing out and rotate a concealed missile.

All of this of course comes with the standard Revoltech stand, coin and container.

It's been a few years since the original Shin Seki Gokin Neo Getter (7 years, in fact) and Aoshima is still getting mileage out of the mold. The original Black Neo getter was announced at the 2003 Tokyo Toy Show, but was never produced, much to fan's dismay.

Now Anime-Export has put out an exclusive black version in conjunction with Aoshima/Miracle House. Who are Anime-Export.com you ask? They are a retailer and wholesaler of Japanese goods based out of Japan, with a strong presence in Europe. They have a history of making exclusive versions of Aoshima toys, often times much improved over the original.

The Black Neo Getter 1 is a fantastic toy with a few small shortcomings.

First - the positive. The paint is stunning - glossy black and gold, there is not a flaw to be had on the finish of this toy. The green insets actually glow in the dark, and they glow pretty bright.

And the metal.. oh the sweet sweet metal. This toy is almost 90% metal.

The box is an all-new exclusive black box, the cardboard is embossed and has the texture of the old Orguss boxes by Takatoku.

The toy features MOST of the accessories included with the original, such as the missile-firing back units, interchangeable hands, and the energy beam. What is NOT included is the chain fist arms, even though the spots are there in the Styrofoam.

Neo Getter also features redesigned elbows that are exclusive to this release. This version now features the elbows that are like those used in their Mazinkaiser release. You first pull the arms down and THEN bend them. They look great, but this is where the big negative comes in.

See, the arms don't like to stay on. The friction between the arm peg and the socket is not enough to support the heavy weight of the arm. I bet you could fix this easily by applying a drop of nail polish on the peg and letting it dry, but still, it is an inconvenience. Perhaps I just got a bum one?

I have a stupid attachment to this toy, as I remember seeing it in every store during my first trip to Tokyo.

In theory, this looks like a great toy. Its 20 cm tall, includes an attachable Getter Wing, 2 Getter Tomahawks, Getter Missile Machine Gun and 5 extra hands. And just looking at it, it looks great, doesn’t it?

Unfortunately, all hope is lost when you start playing with it. The joints get loose easily and won’t stand up well at all. The cape is actually flimsy vinyl that looks like crap. And even worse, the cape attaches to two pegs on the back which only secure when the shoulder cowl is pressed down firmly. That cowl? It doesn’t stay on.

The hands don’t like to stay on, and getting it to hold the gun is such a pain in the ass. You actually have to remove the front handle from the gun and kind of thread the handle through one of the hands.

I’d stay away from this unless you are a getter nut and have to have each and every getter toy out there. There have been far better renditions of the character released, don’t bother with this one. It’s no surprise that Yujin cancelled the line.

This is actually the second version of the toy, called the “Final Version”. The original version had different elbows and other subtle differences. Also issued was a Training color version Getter 1.

Neo Getter gets no respect in the world of Getter Robo, with all the attention
going to his brother, Shin getter. But here's a tip, Neo Getter is the better
toy.

Both toys have diecast construction, clicky joints and immaculate paint jobs.
But Neo Getter wins with all the cool gimmicks.

First off, Neo Getter has chain fists! That's right. A hollow alternate set
of forearms houses a long chain attached to the fist! Pull the fist off and
the chain extends. it does not fire, unfortunately.

Neo getter also has a feature that most modern chogokin have been lacking
 - firing missiles! The two tread banks on the back open up to fire spring loaded
missiles. They aren't the most powerful missiles in the world, but they do
 fire!

Also, Neo Getter comes with a unique energy bolt that he can hold above his
head, to replicate the effect in the anime.

Other accessories include an alternate set of hands, and special handshake
hands for Shin Getter, so Shin and Neo can shake hands. (Mazinkaiser can shake
hands as well. They're awfully friendly).

Aoshima produced several different versions of this toy. Here's a guide to
 the toys and their differences:

This version of Neo Getter 1 is from the Shin Getter VS Neo Getter OVA, and is
drastically different than the die cast version put out by Aoshima.

It is number 2 in Romando's Mechanical Romance Series, or Mecha Roman
for short. Each figure is made of vinyl and plastic, and is fully articulated.
 It has
limited articulation at the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles.

The paint job is astounding, with subtle changes in color, and
 a fantastic attention to detail.

The main flaw of the figure is durability; the joints are very
fragile. The soft plastic will break if you try to put into an extreme pose.
The joints have limited range, and one has to wonder why the put foam between
 the elbow joints.

This figure is not a good value at the original retail price of ¥3300,
but you can find them all over the USA at clearance prices.
:

This version of Shin Getta 1 is from the Shin Getter VS Neo Getter OVA, and is
drastically different than the die cast version put out by Aoshima.

It is number 3 in Romando's Mechanical Romance Series, or Mecha Roman
for short. Each figure is made of vinyl and plastic, and is fully articulated.
The neck has a unique joint that allows for a variety of cool poses. It has
limited articulation at the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles.
It even features a waist joint.

Shin Getter 1 features large black devil wings that can fold up and down on
ball joints. The paint job is astounding, with subtle changes in color, and
 a fantastic attention to detail.

The main flaw of the figure is durability; the wings and the joints are very
fragile. The soft plastic will break if you try to put into an extreme pose.
During this photo shoot, I broke a wing, and I broke off the lower right arm.

This figure is not a good value at the original retail price of ¥3300,
but you can find them all over the USA at clearance prices.
