 <label><p>Even in the harsh jungles of Kumen, Votoms still has room for fanciful ideas such as an ace pilot with a custom paint scheme. The mysterious Ypsilon tears up the jungle in his custom ATH-14-WPC Snapping Turtle, which is distinguished from the regular grunts by its striking deep blue and white color scheme. </p>
<p>This Snapping Turtle is part of the same series of toys at the <a href="http://collectiondx.com/review/robot_toy/at_collection_series_diving_beetle">Diving Beetle</a> I also reviewed. Toys from this line are made from a combination of ABS plastic and diecast metal. </p>

<p>The toy itself is made primarily of blue plastic with a little diecast in the chest. It has far less diecast than the Diving Beetle. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takara/Votoms/snturtle/snturtle6.JPG.html" >

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takara/Votoms/snturtle/snturtle7.JPG.html" >

</div></p>
<p>Unlike the Diving Beetle, the Snapping Turtle dares to have some useful articulation. A pair of knee joints let this old toy achieve a fairly convincing walking pose.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takara/Votoms/snturtle/snturtle8.JPG.html" >

<p>The recent smattering of 1:60 scale toys has made me into a bit of a scale nut. <label><p>The Kummen Jungle arc of the series Armored Trooper Votoms is widely regarded as one of its most memorable aspects. Taking cues from famous Vietnam War films like, Apocalypse Now, it featured blue-haired protagonist Chirico Cuvie and his mercenary allies making their way down a long jungle river. As a way of making the setting seem just a little more "real," the Kummen forces as well as the Assemble E-X mercenaries employed specialized Armored Troopers (ATs) suited for amphibious warfare. For the mercenaries it was the ATH-06-WP Diving Beetle. </p>
<p>Throughout the course of the show, its main sponsor Takara released dozens of toys and model kits of the various ATs. This toy is from their AT Collection Series, which consisted of 1:60 scale figures made from ABS plastic and diecast. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takara/Votoms/dibeetle/dibeetle1.JPG.html" >

<p>With toys from this era, the box was easily as important as the figured itself. This robust cardboard box features an eye-catching painting of the Diving Beetle. This painting is done in the style of military model boxart and gives the design a feeling of legitimacy as a weapon of war. The artist for this picture is Shin Ueda.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takara/Votoms/dibeetle/dibeetle2.JPG.html" >

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takara/Votoms/dibeetle/dibeetle4.JPG.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The right side features another show of Paul with his AT pilot goggles and two different meanings for the word "Votoms." The first meaning is the actual description of an AT and has been used in printed materials since the show began. The other meaning is some hilarious Engrish phrase meant to invoke the military tradition of giving colorful nicknames to a soldier's gear. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takara/Votoms/dibeetle/dibeetle5.JPG.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The toy itself is a very basic figure. Its lower legs are almost entirely metal, which gives the toy a nice heft. The 1:60 scale soldier is from Yamato's 1:60 scale Destroid Tomahawk. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takara/Votoms/dibeetle/dibeetle6.JPG.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>There is some minor assembly required to complete the figure. You have to plug in the backpack and plug the gun into the Diving Beetle's hand. The figure's only articulation is in the shoulders.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takara/Votoms/dibeetle/dibeetle7.JPG.html" >

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>One interesting thing is that the feet are hollow. You can also find the copyright information near the "toes". </p>
<p>The AT Collection Series toys are cheap and easy to find (and addicting). I bought this one for only $10. To me, it is a nice vintage representation of one of my favorite ATs from Votoms. Plus, it goes well with all of my other 1:60 scale mecha.</p><br class="giImageBlock-clear-both" />: </label>

 Does your jet black Porsche 928S transform into an evil German scientist? Mine does.:

</div><div class="flexinode-textarea-6"><div class="form-item">
 <label><p>The Super GoBot Herr Fiend, originally Scale Robo DX Porsche 928S Robo from the Machine Robo line, is one of the nicest of the GoBots. The Japanese version and its European counterpart were available in two different types of blue, but I find that the US version has the superior colors. Its pitch black color scheme is fearsome and really goes with the identity of an evil robot scientist of the German persuasion. Imagine if Rotwang from Metropolis could transform into a car!</p>
<p>So how does Herr Fiend hold up as a toy and not a character? This is almost entirely diecast metal with rolling rubber wheels. You hold it up to your cheek and you feel the cool zinc alloy. The paint job is great and while it's a little hard to see the details in all that black paint, it just looks fantastic.</p>
<div align="center"><div class ="giImageBlock nowrap"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/MR/herrfiend/herrfiend2.png.html" >

      <img src="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery2/gallery/d/490430-1/herrfiend2.png" width="257" height="412" class="giThumbnail" alt="herrfiend2" longdesc="Herr Fiend Robot Back"/>
    </a>

   </div>
</div></div>
<p>Yes, you can see the seams on the toy where it transforms, but it makes for a pretty convincing car. It has your basic stickers like a license plate, tail and headlights, and optional big stupid racing numbers, but I think it looks way better without them.</p>
<p>It is also bigger and has more heft than the Diaclone Car Robot toys from Takara that Popy was obviously competing with. If you have to pick between Herr Fiend and the Transformer Jazz, remember that Herr Fiend doesn't break if you breathe on it.</p>
<div align="center"><div class ="giImageBlock nowrap"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/MR/herrfiend/herrfiend4.png.html" >

      <img src="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery2/gallery/d/490432-1/herrfiend4.png" width="422" height="235" class="giThumbnail" alt="herrfiend4" longdesc="Herr Fiend Car Front"/>
    </a>

   </div>
</div></div>
<p>The transformation is simple but satisfying, similar to the other Scale Robo DX cars. Also like those toys, Herr Fiend seems less like a robot with a personality and more like a robotic vehicle. There's even a little human figure in the cockpit!</p>
<p>One down side is that his ass is a car hood, but at least it's not going to snap off. The articulation is acceptable for the '80s. The legs are basically immobile, but the arms have a decent range of motion. The robot's head is just as inhuman as the other Scale Robo DX toys and he has these weird turning fork hands. I wonder how exactly Herr Fiend performs horrible medical procedures with those stubby things!</p>
<div align="center"><div class ="giImageBlock nowrap"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/MR/herrfiend/herrfiend3.png.html" >

      <img src="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery2/gallery/d/490434-1/herrfiend3.png" width="371" height="203" class="giThumbnail" alt="herrfiend3" longdesc="Herr Fiend Car Back"/>
    </a>

   </div>
</div></div>
<p>If I were rating this against the other Super GoBot toys, I'd say Psycho has a cooler robot mode and better hands, but Herr Fiend has way more metal. Herr Fiend's slick black paint job puts the toy right near the top. I really like all of the Super GoBot cars based on Scale Robo DX line, but this is one case where America got the better deal. The mold itself is not quite as cool as Bug Bite or Pscyho, but Herr Fiend has as much metal as Bug Bite and the cooler color scheme, so I'd say they are on close to even footing. </p>
<div align="center"><div class ="giImageBlock nowrap"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/MR/herrfiend/herrfiendbox.png.html" >

      <img src="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery2/gallery/d/490423-1/herrfiendbox.png" width="306" height="427" class="giThumbnail" alt="herrfiendbox" longdesc="Herr Fiend Box Front"/>
    </a>

   </div>
</div></div>
<p>Herr Fiend has no weapon at all. He doesn't even have a weird gun-hat like Bug Bite, but this robot is an evil scientist, not a warrior, so I don't mind that much.</p>
<p>If your entire impression of GoBots is short, crappy Transformers ripoffs, you are in for a treat with the Super GoBot cars. In robot mode, these are almost twice as tall as the Transformers that began as Diaclone Car Robots like Jazz and Prowl. They don't have as many fine details (no missile launchers for example), but they are way bigger, include far more metal, and are nowhere near as fragile and fiddly.</p>
<p>Herr Fiend is a nice example of the line and the good news is that thanks to the terrible reputation the GoBots enjoy, you can pick these up for pretty cheap on the secondary market. Did I mention this toy was manufactured by Popy? That's right, this classic diecast robot even has a little Popy logo etched into the metal.</p>

<p>With Herr Fiend you get a sweet paint job, copious metal, rubber tires, and a classy personality. Let's face it, this is the kind of GoBot you always wished you had: the kind that performs eugenics experiments.</p><br class="giImageBlock-clear-both" />: </label>

 <label><p>Laserion DX is the hero mecha from Video Warrior Laserion, a cartoon which originally aired for 45 episodes in 1984. From what I can tell, VWL was a virtual-reality based story, obviously influenced by Tron. </p>

<p>The show and its toys were unpopular, and the chogokin languished on shelves in both Japan and the US (both DX and ST models were released domestically under the Godaikin brand). </p>
<p>When I became serious about vintage gokin, I was equally confused and elated by the typical robot collector’s indifference towards Laserion, a toy which I found especially appealing*. I was able to easily snap up a few lots to assemble a complete, minty specimen for hundreds of dollars less than any other Godaikin-era gokin of similar size. It was one of the rare instances where what I desired was actually plentiful and cheap. Laserion, at least in its Godaikin incarnation, ontinues to be an easily obtained, entry-level piece. </p>
<p>Laserion comes in a classic suitcase-styled Popy box (15" x 12" x 4"), with handsome photographs and art on the front and sides. I particularly like the green wireframe illustration. </p>

<p>Inside, the playset rests in its Styrofoam cocoon, covered in the typical Popy window-lid.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/Laserion+box+inside+2.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>In broad strokes, the set consists of the main robot armature, the infill body pieces, and weapons/accessories. I find the shear number of parts exciting, but I can understand how those partial to perfect transformation would be put off.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/Laserion+box+inside.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The “empty” armature is a formidable toy on its own. It’s substantial (at 11”)and fun enough to play with by itself. The figure tends to “melt” due to its collapsible nature, though. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+armature+1.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The fully-collapsed mode is interesting, but I can’t imagine why it exists. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+collapsed.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The body is mostly ABS, but with metal pins at all of the multifarious collapsing joints and diecast at the shoulders, knees, and elbows. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+joint+detail.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The parts which fit inside its torso and appendages can be combined into two modes with small rubber plugs, included (but often missing). </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+ship.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>Both of these configurations suck heavily. The rubber plugs prevent any sort of solid connection, so the toys are just gooey blocks of fail. This feature is the weakest part of the whole set. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+robot.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The head is a spaceship unto itself, and includes a small pilot within. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+head.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>With the combination of the armature and the inserts, the figure really shines. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+front+2.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The textural complexity of the flat black, red, silver, and red; the chrome; and the translucent green, is unequaled in classic gokin, or indeed, since. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The figure comes equipped with a sword, gun and knee-lasers. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+weapons.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>Laserion, while technically well articulated, is essentially a brick. But he’s so heavy and complex that I don’t miss the pose-ability. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+sword.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>But wait! It gets (much) better. Until a few months ago, I was somehow unaware of the upgrade armor! I luckily happened upon an auction for the accessory, bid on it before I knew what the hell it was, and then did my research. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+armor+box+front.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The armor is sublime. All plastic, it comes packaged separately in a window box. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+armor+box+bag.jpg.html" >

<p>Inside, the (8) pieces are packed in Styrofoam with cardboard backing graphics. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>I was a huge fan before I knew this set existed, but Laserion is incomplete without it. When you’ve fitted the pieces, each held on with friction, you get the feeling that this is the way he was supposed to look. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+34+armor.jpg.html" >

   </div>
</div></p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-17+Laserion/laserion+back+armor.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The bulkiness of the armor still preserves the layering and transparency of the overall figure, magnifying the complexity and depth of the design. </p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

<p>Gaze upon it, ye mortals:</p>

<p>*So why does Laserion appeal so much to me?</p>
<p>My design sensibility is influenced by the confluence of nostalgia and tectonics, ie what I feel is “cool” in my gut and what I can appreciate as a beautiful and intuitively fun object. </p>
<p>As a child of the eighties, my aesthetic taste is forever imprinted with a bias for the design touchstones of that era: chrome, angular lines, transparency, bold colors. </p>
<p>This era, arguably, also saw the nadir of aesthetics and engineering in Japanese toys. </p>
<p>Laserion, as a toy, is ambitious. It does more per-inch than other contemporaneous gokin. Each joint in a toy is a significant investment in engineering and material cost, and Laserion has around 70 JOINTS in the main figure alone. The engineering of the armature is totally unlike any other toy robot, Popy or otherwise, with no closed clam-shell volumes at all, just an articulated framework. </p>
<p>Laserion personifies the entire mystique of the modern robot, the union between the machine and the spirit. Laserion’s design is a totally unique interpretation of the larger idea. The other titans of classic Gokin, say Tetsujin, Voltes, and Combattra, while well executed and soulful, don’t break any new ground in character design. Most are just impeccable versions of classic characters, either revised from previous designs or similar to each other. Laserion is a singular, beautiful expression of the mecha narrative which isn’t visually derivative of other characters. </p>
<p>Laserion succeeds in being the embodiment of the super robot idea, realized with state-of-the-art engineering and quality (which we may never see again), while still being fun and funky. I think, by any standard, Laserion can compete with any of the more beloved Popy DX bots.</p><br class="giImageBlock-clear-both" />: </label>

 <label><p>Lets face it, eighties mecha rocks. Whether you are talking about Laserion, Vavilos, Albegas or even Commpoboy, there is something so cool about the vision of the future at that time.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-23/PC161769.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>Bismarck is a classic example of a design from that school. Hard blocky lines, copious amounts of chrome, red and black, this bot has it all. The Bismarck hails from the 1984 TV anime Sei Jushi Bismarck (&#26143;&#37507;&#22763;&#12499;&#12473;&#12510;&#12523;&#12463; Star Musketeer Bismarck) which was brought over to the US by World Events Productions (the same who did Voltron) as Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs. In Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs, Bismarck was known as Ramrod.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-23/PC161770.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>Even though this is a ST or standard) size chogokin, it still has plenty of gimmicks and for a gokin - really fantastic articulation.</p>
<p>First off, you can't ignore the giant guns on the chest. These guns can pivot up and down and are made out of a bendable plastic that resists breaking.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-23/PC161771.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The left arm features a firing fist, while the right arm has some hand articulation that can hold a gun.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-23/PC161774.jpg.html" >

      <img src="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery2/gallery/d/426179-4/PC161774.jpg" width="480" height="640" class="giThumbnail" alt="Bismarck" longdesc="Bismarck"/>
    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>When not in use, the gun is stored in a holster at the side.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-23/PC161776.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>Just look at the arm articulation. Amazing stuff for a vintage gokin.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-23/PC161777.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>From there down the toy continues to impress. There's a waist joint, ball jointed hips, knees that bend, and articulated ankles.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-23/PC161773.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The panels on the sides of the lower legs open to reveal working missile launchers with microscopic missiles.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Bandai/Chogokin/GC-23/PC161775.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>While this toy does not have as many gimmicks as its impressive <b><a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/node/1127">larger brother</a></b>, it is still a great toy in its own right, and is one of the more affordable vintage gokin one can search after.</p><br class="giImageBlock-clear-both" />: </label>

<p>Gobarian is of course supposed to be Govarian, a little known Mazinger-esque creation of Go Nagai. The Korean's really must have loved this show, because there have been a TON of toys using its likeness.</p>

<p>The body is stolen from the Nomura ST Baldios, with several changes made to its appearance.</p>
<p>The head is new, and is a poorly casted and painted representation of Govarian. It looks like something a recovering addict would have made in rehab pottery class.</p>

 Takatoku made some really great toys back in the day... Not sure if this is one of them or not.:

<p>The 1/60 scale Orguss toys are significantly smaller than their larger 1/40 siblings. The transformation options are now limited to two modes, but with that you gain more dynamic poses and a more "action figure" like toy.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takatoku/Orguss/160Orgroid/PC161764.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>Super Dimension Century Orguss was the follow up show to Macross, and it had a lot of the same staff involved. It’s only natural that people who dig Macross also have an affinity for Orguss.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/Takatoku/Orguss/160Orgroid/PC161757.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>The show is kind of hard to explain, but a fighter pilot named Kei is at ground zero when a reality bomb goes off, and he ends up in a world that is a combination of two different dimensions. Kei is an oddity in this world. He is known as an “Idiosynchratic Point”, and both sides of the conflict – the Chilam and Emann want him for their own. The Emann convert Kei’s damaged Bronco 2 fighter into the transformable Orguss fighter. The name Orguss is a god of war in this alternate world.</p>
<p>The Orgroid comes in the typically beautiful Takatoku box, with its textured cardboard and detailed illustrations. A thin sheet of cellophane protects the toy from the outside world and is often seen punctured or torn on older specimens.</p>

<p>These old Takatoku toys were actually marketed as models, for you to paint and detail on your own. Check out the amazing painted version of this toy on the box.</p>

   </div>
</div></p>
<p>Also included were stickers and a catalog. </p>
<p>Unfortunately, these toys did not stand the test of time. Colors faded and plastic became brittle – the immense weight of the diecast feet caused them to break off from the lower legs. Joints got loose over time.. </p>
<p>Still, I can’t help but love these toys. Maybe I am just nostalgic for a time long gone. I love the aesthetics of the Orguss world, and as fragile as these toys are, I have a compulsion to buy every one I get my hands on.</p>

 Gundam is certainly the rarest hero jumbo known to exist.

 <label><p>December 1st 2006 and I'm on a flight to Tokyo. Normally this would be the sort of thing that would consume all your thoughts. How's the weather there? Did I bring enough money? I wonder what the convention will be like? What am I gonna find in the shops? Where can I find Pepsi? Will eating McDonald's for a week straight kill you? <i><b>Will this flight ever end??</b></i> </p>
<p>But not this time. This time my mind is somewhere else entirely. There's this auction, y'see. And it ends while I'm in the air. And if I win it, I'm not gonna have a dime to spend on this whole dang trip. Which means traveling to the other side of the world to sit in an apartment for 10 days and then go home again. But I hope like heck that I do because that means I will have won only the 3rd specimen of the Gundam Jumbo Machinder known to exist. Before leaving home, I placed a bid with a sniping company and I would just have to let the chips fall where they may, not being able to watch the auction close like I normally would. Granted, that is probably for the best at this stage in my life. I was at the point where too many times I found myself sitting at my computer, sweat dripping, heart racing, feeling like I'm about to drop over from stress. You know, the stress of a <i>toy auction</i>. Ridiculous, isn't it? I could just hear the coroner saying "Cause of death....machinders."</p>
<div align="center"><div class ="giImageBlock nowrap"><div class="one-image">

   </div>
</div></div>
<p>Anyway. I arrive at my destination, greet my hosts and as quick as proper etiquette will allow, I'm on the computer to check the results.</p>
<p>And I suddenly really, really hope I find a nice toy in a shop in the coming week because Gundam was not to be. Although I bid over $2500 more than the guy behind me, the guy in front bid just a little more and I had to settle for second place. Second place sucks. Especially since I had no idea who had outbid me. I'd never seen the name before. You know how it is. If you stick around long enough, you usually get to know the competition and there's a certain solace in knowing that the prize at least went to someone in the community. And although I didn't know it then, it turns out it did. In fact, the winner turned out to be a friend of mine bidding with another ID and I'd just cost him a pretty penny with my last second snipe! Oooops! </p>
<div align="center"><div class ="giImageBlock nowrap"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/CeppiRatti/Gundam_001/27.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></div>
<p>Unfortunately, the rest of the trip would yield no Jumbos for me either and in fact ended up being the most disappointing trip there I've had. But all's well that end's well, as they say, and just about a month ago, Gundam specimen number 4 surfaced and this time I was able to close the deal (with a little help from selling all of my die-cast robots, mind you). The condition wasn't as good as the previous one, which was absolutely dead-stock, but beggars can't be choosers. I'll take it. Interestingly, both the 3rd and 4th known examples of this toy were found in the UK, not Italy where it originated.</p>
<p>Gundam is a pretty amazing toy, both in terms of it's appearance, play value and place in history. There is a mystique to this toy that few others can claim. Despite the enormous popularity of the character in Japan today, apparently it sort of tanked when it came out and only got really popular years after the initial series. By the time that happened though, most Japanese toy companies had come to realize that these large sized Jumbo Machinder toys were not profitable enough to continue producing them. For many years, it was believed that a Jumbo sized Gundam was never made.</p>
<div align="center"><div class ="giImageBlock nowrap"><div class="one-image">

                              <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/gallery/Toys/CeppiRatti/Gundam_001/19.jpg.html" >

    </a>

   </div>
</div></div>
<p>The first clue that perhaps something was out there came in the form of a knockoff Jumbo called <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/node/1316">Titan</a>. The Titan toy used legs that were clearly based on the Gundam toys made by Clover before they sold the license to Bandai (and before they made toys that actually looked like how Gundam looked in the show). It also used the head of Groizer X, which was never made as a Jumbo either. Were these original sculpts by the Ceppi Ratti, the Italian company that released the toy? Or did they get their hands on some unproduced prototypes from Japan? More importantly, were there complete Jumbos of Gundam and Groizer X out there, waiting to be found?</p>
<p>While there is still no more evidence of a full Groizer X Jumbo, not too long after Titan appeared, images of a full sized Gundam Jumbo turned up, but they were clearly of a knockoff toy. The hands were from the Popy Gordian Jumbo and it used the <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/taxonomy/term/689">Robot Factory</a> method of assembly employed by Popy near the end of their Jumbo Machinder run. When the first boxed specimen surfaced, it was confirmed that the toy was made in Italy by the same company that made Titan, Ceppi Ratti. Furthermore, even though I consider it a "knockoff" since it re-uses parts from existing toys, it is indeed licensed. But the theory that the toy was really from an un-made Clover toy only seemed to be re-enforced by close examination of the toy since it's quality was so far in advance of any other known Italian Jumbos, even the Titan by Ceppi Ratti. This thing is just head and shoulders above any of it's peers. I mean, does it seem likely that the same company made these two toys, of the same character, at roughly the same time?</p>

<p>Personally, I find it hard to believe that Ceppi Ratti did this one on their own. Especially when you start to factor in all the bells and whistles that this toy has, which would rival, or even surpass, the best that Popy ever did.</p>
<p>Gundam comes with a variety of great weapons. It has an axe that comes molded in four parts; a big yellow blade with a supplemental blade on the back, a long yellow handle and two red attachments. One of the attachments is where the two yellow pieces connect and the other is mostly ornamental on the bottom.</p>

<p>If melee weapons aren't your thing, it also comes with a nice red gun that you can put in either hand. Personally, I prefer the axe.</p>

<p>Now, I know you noticed that GIANT awesome shield, right? It looks absolutely beautiful and has a handle that can be inserted into either fist. Unfortunately, mine is a bit yellowed with age.</p>
<div align="center"><div class ="giImageBlock nowrap"><div class="one-image">

   </div>
</div></div>
<p>Do you like projectiles? Well, besides both fists firing like most Machinders, Gundam also has a big removable cannon sitting on it's right shoulder with a firing missile! It even had a cool scope on the side and if you wanted to, you could even store the tightening tool for the nuts on the back of it.</p>
<div align="center"><div class ="giImageBlock nowrap"><div class="one-image">

</div></div>
<p>Now about that sword. Well, what is the point of having a sword that doesn't fit in the hand? I know, I know, I feel your pain. But what if the trade-off was that it could fire out of the arm!?!?!</p>
<div align="center"><div class ="giImageBlock nowrap"><div class="one-image">

<p>Yes, once the fist has been launched, it's not out of ammo yet. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only Jumbo out there that has a weapon that can be fired in place of it's hand. I had no idea about this until getting mine and I think it's a great feature.</p>
<p>The box for this toy is similar to other Italian robot factory style Jumbos and measures 15.5"x12"x5". It appears to show a prototype of the toy with silver on the head in place of blue and the axe is silver instead of yellow. Action features are shown on the sides and the back has a parts list/assembly blueprint.</p>

<p>You may notice that my example is missing a few stickers here and there. But remember my friend who ended up paying through the nose for his because of me and my snipe? Well, fortunately he doesn't take things like that personally and has promised to send me a scan of the sticker sheet at some point. <a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v448/nekrodave/icons/?action=view&amp;current=thumb-1.gif" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v448/nekrodave/icons/thumb-1.gif" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a></p>
<p>Once assembled, Gundam stands about 25" tall. The sculpt as well as the fit and finish is fantastic. This is real quality work here, unlike other cheap Italian knockoff Jumbos, such as the lovable, yet lamentable, <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/node/2384">Space Valour</a>. It holds together as well as a Popy toy and stands solidly. Everything fits. It's truly a one of kind masterpiece and has probably surpassed <a href="http://www.collectiondx.com/node/1260">Dangard Ace</a> as my favorite Machinder. </p>

 <label><p>Robeast Mutilor may be one of the worst action figures ever made.</p>
<p>He's from Panosh Place's Voltron line of toys. You know them, the company who made the OTHER Voltron toys. Matchbox had the license to use Popy's chogokin toys (Golion, Abega and Dairugger), and the rest went to a couple of companies that had no idea about what they were doing at the time. At least LJN came out with some cool toys, such as the Commander Voltron (adapted from the Japanese Golion Jumbo machine). Panosh Place pretty much destroyed the property.</p>
<p>Ok, picture this. Its 1984. You're way into Voltron, it is your favorite show. So for your birthday you ask for a Voltron toy.</p>
<p>You get the plastic Panosh Place Voltron. The one with the <a href="http://www.virtualtoychest.com/voltron/Voltron_panosh_1_crop.jpg">opening cockpits and horrible proportions</a>.</p>
<p>Ok, you can deal with that. But on the show, Voltron fights Robeasts. These giant monsters put up a decent fight but never seem to be able to withstand the wrath of the Blazing Sword. You would think that after the third or fourth robeast gets cut in half they would try a different tactic.</p>
<p>So you ask for a robeast. for Christmas.</p>
<p>And you get this. THIS IS VOLTRON'S ENEMY.</p>
<p><div class ="giImageBlock g2image_centered"><div class="one-image">

<p>WHAT THE HELL PANOSH PLACE.</p>
<p>Lets ignore the fact that it looks like it was made in one of those places that let you paint clay pots and pick them up later in the day. The Panosh Place Voltron was like 14 inches tall, and this guy is like 3 INCHES TALL.</p>
