The thing with Grimlock serving drinks to Rodimus Prime and Co. is a reference or homage to the G1 Season 3 episode called 'Grimlock's New Brain'. The plot centers on Grimlock who somehow gain superior intelligence from a freak accident in Cybertron, and how his newly found abilities and personality effects the relationship to his friends especially his Dinobot Clan. I think this episode was inspired by the science fiction classic novel, 'Flowers for Algernon' by Daniel Keys.

This episode also introduces the latest gestalt team, The Technobots. They weren't created by Vector Sigma, but none other than Grimlock who built them from Unicron's remains as a means to save The Autobots from being clobbered by the Terrorcons that have combined into the mercilless robo-warrior, Abominus. The Technobots duked it with The Cons, and they also combined into Computron. Abominus was too powerful for Computron to defeat, so Grimlock sacrificed his ultra-intellect to Computron as a winning trump card to defeat Abominus. Thus reverting Grimlock back to his big, dumb but lovable brute self.

'Grimlock's New Brain' is a very significant episode in regards to Grimlock's developed character and to the entire G1 series. This explains why the drinking tray is incorporated w/ this latest Masterpiece toy. I hope this answers your question. Please correct me if I missed something else.
