 Haha. Yeah I should have put the "EPIC NERDAGE" disclaimer on this podcast. Between the references to Highlander 2 and Dune, this whole show as pretty out there. It's all Todd's fault. He brings out the worst in me. -Andrew  I loved (full sarcasm go) the close to realistic take on EFSF Formal attire, but Nothing, and I mean NOTHING! Beats the recycled Armor from Starship Troopers!  Well-! That makes three times I've seen those armor suits other than "Starship Troopers" (good effects, but it's so bad it's funny, BTW)-
That is sad. Any other places I've missed? (Having not read the novel yet, weren't they supposed to have powered armor?) Anyways, aside from their failed appearance in that movie, is the recent "Iron Man" the first US film to feature full-on powered armor? (Or does that go to the power loader from "Aliens"; cause that don't seem like "armor" to me...) Yeah, according to the novel they had full body suits, like super inflated armor plated space suits like the ones from Alien. Shoji Kawamori did some designs that got turned into models (I think, I know they're in his Macross Design Works book). Aliens: first powered armor Popular Science: First generation real deal exo-suit, not fully moble as Stark Industry's model but its impressive enough to get DARPA's attention. Anyway: G-Saviour, I forgot how long it took before you actually see the machine move and even then I forgot how scrawny its limbs are. like a stick figure with a cannon. I got the model to build a long time ago, started bu unfinished, maybe once i get it done I'll do a review for CDX.  I'd say the power loader counts, but I could see where some people might disagree with that. Uh, Miyatake designed the powered suit, as is clearly written on the powered suit toy from a couple of years back. Perhaps Kawamori helped come up with the variations that were actually used in the Starship Troopers anime, but it's a Miyatake design. -Jeremy  I bought this movie, back when DVDs were 30 dollars. Cry for me, please....  Haven't listened to the podcast yet, but Mark Simmons told me that there was a trailer of G-Savior that was being shown around that had completely different live action footage from the final movie, including shots of a female space pirate with a tiger on a leash. My impression of the movie was that the robot designs and CGI stuff were done long before a script was even written, and then they sort of shoe-horned the live action stuff around it later on. The whole thing is a mess, but incredibly entertaining in its badness. (It's no Sayonara Jupiter, though. You've got to see that one to believe it.) I'm pretty sure those Starship Troopers uniforms showed up in Babylon 5: Crusade, too. Also, Naoyuki Katoh was involved in the design of the original Starship Troopers powered suit in addition to Miyatake. The powered suit design was originally for the Daicon animation years before the Starship Troopers anime. Was Naoyuki Katoh involved with it at that stage, or the ST stage? The ST design is modified a little bit from the original Daicon design. -Jeremy The powered suit design that appears in the Daicon short is the one from the Japanese translation of the Starship Troopers novel that was published in the 1970s. That edition of the novel featured a fold-out painted cover and black and white artwork throughout. The suit was designed by Miyatake and Katoh and Katoh did the illustrations. I believe they had Studio Nue going at that point. Regardless, Nue owns the design. Katoh and Miyatake have also been working as consultants on Wave's powered suit kits over the years. It was used in the Daicon short later (as a fan work that incorporated everybody else's characters I'm sure Nue didn't mind), and then it was redesigned for the Starship Troopers anime in the 1980s. I believe Bandai/Sunrise owns that design. (They can have it, bleh.) It's said that the Japanese translation of Starship Troopers is what inspired Tomino to create Gundam, and it really set the tone for 1980s mecha design, so it's worth tracking down a copy as a historical artifact.
