The reason THAT production doesn't get me excited is the lack of credentials to make such a movie by the writer and director. I would rather they not do one if it's going to be junk.

Yes both versions of Frankenstein are very decent actually. The Kenneth Branagh/Robert Di Niro version really took me by surprise and very much explores the concepts Mary Shelly put forth in her original novel.

=) I actually liked the Mummy. It falls under the "fun" category for me so I tend to give those films some leeway. I do think the sequel has some pretty poorly executed CG though and the whole Scorpion King thing was pretty lame. They are shooting a third one now, with Jet Lee no less. I'm not saying that is good or bad... I'm just informing. :) Though Jet seems to pick good roles.

Now if only our tragic gill monster Bro could have run across her instead. It would have been such a happier tale....

Thanks, Atom!
"Though I would like to see the character get a 21st century reboot myself."
You'll get your wish! But am I excited? Nah. I've never really gotten into remakes...
I have to admit though, I randomly caught De Niro in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein on tv the other day. Not too shabby...but I actually found TNT's 1992 tv production of Frankenstein to be my favorite telling of this story. I know, I know...Randy Quaid??? Seriously, if you're a Franky fan, check out this incarnation of the story. It's smoking.
...Okay, now that I've completely hosed my own argument against remakes in general, let me modify my previous statement: I've never gotten into most remakes! So, will I go see the Creature remake? Probably...but only because it's the Gill-Man we're talking about here. I don't have high hopes for a good film, though...just look what they did to poor Imhotep in '99's The Mummy...
Great review Sanjeev, as always! I too consider the Gill Man the best of the Universal Monsters. I still think the creature effects still hold today. Though I would like to see the character get a 21st century reboot myself. :)
