Gundam Build Fighters 1/144th scale High Grade series

Bandai is creating a new model kit series with an emphasis on modular parts for customization called Gundam Build Fighters. The upcoming animated series is similar to the Gunpla Builders shorts in where kids battle customized model kits through the use of a virtual reality world. What this means for the new High Grade kits is that they will be built with a common joint system that allows for easy parts swapping between kits. The initial roundup of kits includes Gundam Build Fighters originals and a good selection of Gundam designs that have not been made into modern 1/144th scale kits yet.

Build Strike Gundam: Coming October 2013 for 1,470 yen.

Zaku Amazing: Coming October 2013 for 1,890 yen.

Gundam X Devil: Coming November 2013. Price TBD.

HGAC Wing Gundam. Coming September 2013 for 1,575 yen.

HGAW Gundam Double X. Coming October 2013 for 1,785 yen.

HGUC Victory Gundam. Coming November 2013 for 1,260 yen.

HG Gundam Build Striker. Coming October 2013 for 525 yen.

At least the Models will be new

...I half expected this whole announcement to be the long absent reveal of that rumored "SEED movie" project but I'll gladly be wrong again for this.. sort of. I'm not disappointed it isn't the SEED movie. Thank Primus for that.

This is another example of Bandai/Sunrise having some 4th wall fun with Gundam/Gunpla and keeping with a younger audience base with shows centered on kids piloting 'models' to 'battle' rather than another episode of "Earth Vs Colonies Vs Gundam" that has become the series formula for Gundam.

It will give the franchise a chance to catch its breath, maybe get some fresh blood in the writer's room to give the next Gundam series some room to go in another direction, but until then we're getting a TV series sequel of "Gunpla Builder Beginning G" and "Gundam Breaker."
What I'm happy to see with this announcement is that the HG 1/144 line is going to expand again to non-UC series and shows that aren't on the air or promoted for 'Remastered' (cough upconverted from Standard-to-HD SEED" cough) updates with modular upgrade kits, and kitbash friendly models.

1/144 HG Wing Gundam, V2, Double X? Okay. I can live with that. Now lets see some Master Grades for other designs that haven't gotten as much love. like the Powered GM (that's been on my CDX wish list since 2003. look it up)

As an older fan, I'm not going to have the same bias as the purists and say that "Gundam is for Mature Audiences only" because I have nephews who I'd like to see take up building some day themselves, but I will go on the record of saying that I feel this new series is taking away from 'Gundam' the level of sophistication of a progressive action-adventure series and replaces it with the 'collect 'em all, build 'em all and fight 'em all" marketing structure of Poke'Mon.

Sunrise is still working on the final episode of 'Gundam UC' so the older audiences still have that to look forward to.

"Gunpla Builders" Part 2.

"Gunpla Builders" Part 2.

Y'know, at least with the Beginning Gundam, they took the effort to make a completely new Gundam MS design. But here they just slightly redesigned the Strike Gundam. BORING.

Jump on Design

I don't hold any animosity towards the Strike Gundam, but it is a decent Suit for a starting point for new builders and Gundam newbies to identify with.. I agree that a new design would be nice, but this is a series around building and customizing kits that already exist save for the HG Wing Gundam-Bash that is going to be in this show.

I wasn't trying to disparage

I wasn't trying to disparage the Strike Gundam, I'm actually kind of fond of it. All I was saying was that Bandai was kinda lazy here, passing the very-obviously Strike Gundam off as a slightly-modified/completely different MS.

Wing! Double X!

The original Wing was my first 1/144 model kit, and the G-Falcon Unit Double X was my first 1/100 kit, so I have a deep affinity for both of those. Here's hoping we'll get a G-Falcon (and an Airmaster Burst and Leopard Destroy to go with it) since they're doing other booster kits.

This is kind of what I

This is kind of what I expected when they posted a countdown for a reveal of a new Gundam series that specifically mentioned 1/144 scale. I'm not going to jump up and down and say this is awful news, but it is a bit disappointing that there hasn't been an effort to make a serious Gundam TV show since 00 season 2's end in 2008. Yes, I know we have Unicorn, but each episode takes a year. I just hope that project Tomino is working on that takes place a thousand years after the Universal Century turns out well whenever it comes out.

As for the actual kits, I like the idea of redesigning old HGs. That modified Gundam X in particular looks nice. I'm also really happy about Wing, Double X, Victory, F91, and V2 all finally getting HGs. The only problem is now I have to decide whether to buy the Robot Spirits or the HG of the Double X, but I'm still really glad it's finally getting some attention in plastic form.
