1/400 scale Evangelion Test Type-01 Model Kit
Kotobukiya has revealed all the details about their upcoming Evangelion Test Type-01 model kit based on this Eva unit's appearance in the Rebuild of Evangelion movies. This 1/400 scale kit will stand about 19 centimeters tall once completed and uses a combination of ABS, styrene construction with polycaps for the joints. For accessories, the Evangelion comes with the entry plug, a progressive knife, a pallet rifle, a knife sheath for the shoulder block, and the umbilical cord. It is compatible with Kotobukiya's M.S.G. stand (not included). This is coming in November 2013 for 5,400 yen.

Oh, so they're giving these a scale listing now- "1/400"?

"A much-needed improvement over Bandai's old mid-'90s LM-HG design (which they just like to reissue rather than make a completely new set of molds)."
This statement might have made sense six years ago, before Bandai launched their current line of completely new Eva kits to go with the Rebuild movies.
Other than redesigned utility wings and weapons, and some slight changes to the heads to reflect the Rebuild aesthetic, the "new" Rebuild kits are more-or-less exactly the same molds as their '90s counterparts. Same features, same detailing, same articulation, same part design, same rubbery sleeves for the seamless elbows.
EDIT: I think the Mark.06 and Angel-ified Unit-03 had more changes to the model design than Units 00-02 got.
"the "new" Rebuild kits are more-or-less exactly the same molds as their '90s counterparts."
If that's true, please explain to me which parts exactly are shared between the new kits and old.
Here are the instructions for the legs of...
the old LM-HG Eva-01:

as you can see, the parts breakdown is entirely different.
Here's the construction of the torso for...
the old LM-HG:

the new Rebuild kit:

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10059981z5/70/5
as you can see, the entry plug gimmick, shoulder joints, and chest plates - every salient feature of the torso - are all constructed differently.
You've already stipulated that the heads and shoulders are different, so I'm not bothering to examine those.
While you claim the rubber-sleeved arms are the same, please take a look at the photos of the finished kits, lined up in the same pose...

Are you seriously unable to see that the arms on the Rebuild kit are significantly longer and skinnier than the old kit, to go with the thicker torso and narrower shoulders of the Rebuild design, also accurately reflected in the new kit?
Is there one single part between these two kits that you can honestly claim was made from "the same mold"?
This is becoming a running gag at this point.
Yep.
Looking at the new Eva model I can see where Koto took some cues from Kaiyodo's Revoltech figures. Judging by the display base, it does seem to fit somewhere in the Gunpla-scale between a 1/144 scale kit.
The Rebuild designs are 80 m tall, so it should be about 20 cm at 1/400 scale, closer to a 1/100 gunpla. It would be a bit disappointing if it was at about a 1/144 gunpla scale.
What's worrying me is while it does seem very posable, none of the poses seem to indicate there being a swivel in the legs, which could be a deal-breaker for me. I hope I'm wrong. Either way, this is still a huge step up over some of Kotobukiya's past kits. Anyone remember their old Gurren Lagann kit?
I wonder if this will be compatible with the spear gimmick piece from the Mark 06
