Chogokin Tower of the Sun Robo Updated

Artist Tarou Okamato created the Tower of the Sun as the main symbol of Japan's Expo '70, a kind of world's fair back in 1970. Bandai is taking this iconic piece of culture and turning it into a transformable chogokin with the Tower of the Sun Robo! The figure stands about 28 centimeters tall in robo mode and can compress back down into the original art installation. Coming September 2014 for 17,000 yen.

Bluefin Tamashii has given us information about the stateside release:

From the artistic world of the Japanese Showa Period comes a most unique creation! Introducing the Tower of the Sun Robot (Taiyou No Tou)! Based on esteemed Japanese artist Okamoto Taro’s real-life tower in Osaka, Chogokin Tower of the Sun Robot transforms from its original design into two out of this world forms: Robot Type and Armored Type. Attention to detail captures the soul of the original work of art, while the robotic forms add an element of surprise. This balance ensures you will experience the Tower of the Sun like never before. Set includes a special display base and interchangeable hand parts (left and right). Coming October 2014 for $167.99.

You can preorder the Tower of the Sun Robo at Big Bad Toy Store.

I dig it!

That comes out to be about eleven inches tall in robot mode, meaning it'll look good fighting DX Sentai mecha.. Actually it would make one hell of an opponent for, say, the upcoming Legacy Dragonzord. I like that it has two stages of transformation--just the building with arms and legs, and then a "one-winged angel" form where the top splits open.

All I'm saying is, it looks like a Dairanger/Lord Zedd/Zyu2-era monster, and that makes me intrigued.

I'd seen this thing in pics

I'd seen this thing in pics of Japanese shops and stuff in the past but never knew what it was. Cool to finally know!
