Edit: was the price $350 back in the '80s as well? Damn, it's a shame I'm not a bigger G1 fan and my computer isn't up and running properly, or I'd ask Josh to help me get this to review it.
Fort Max was $100 in 1987.
100 bucks then amounts to about 190 today.
Here's a 1987 JCPenney Christmas Catalog scan showing Fort Max going for about $95.

*while I was looking up that scan, Vince beat me to it.
Fort Max goes for thousands of dollars these days on the after market, it is literally the holy grail among the big transformers collectors. I get the feeling that it's going to get sold out real quick.
I don't know about thousands... my MIB one went for around $850-900 in 2008 and another w/box in 2010 for around $500. My numbers are old, but unless we're talking graded toys, you can still find a nice one (maybe not complete, or complete w/o box, etc) for that price.
I could see this selling out, but in my experience, most TF folks bow out of stuff around $200. Plus, this thing takes over your house instantly, especially if you keep the box. I could see folks passing on this... then again few retailers will order more than one or two... Personally I would get the reissue as the vintage ones sometimes have that "brittle plastic" thing going on. It really is one of the best G1 toys, and worth tracking down and making your wallet cry.
Grand Maximus, the Japan-exclusive repaint from a year later, can and will def. fetch well over a thousand dollars MIB or MISB.
I wouldn't call Fort Max a "holy grail" for collectors though; despite it's high price on the aftermarket, it's not really all that rare - the biggest contributing factor to it's desireability comes mainly from sporting the title of the biggest Transformers toy ever.
While you may be able to get him for as low as 500 dollars, getting one with all it's accessories and not yellowed (Fort Max has a lot of white plastic to discolour over the years) is another thing altogether.
I'm not a transformers collecter but that Soundwave is SICK awesome! I might have second thoughts on buying that set!!!
Fortress Maximus, somehow looked better back in the day, not so much anymore. I'm happy for those that dig it though.
In the copy for MP-15 they have "names verified through translation of the katana"...
Well in Japan they never had that problem since the toys matched the show :>
