Tamashii Nations 2009: Soul of Chogokin

Damn, I am tired. But I couldn't wait to bring you some news. Lets get right down to it. I went to Tamashii Nations preview night. First up: Soul of Chogokin (and other Chogokin)

BIG O - What a surprise. Great sculpt but very preliminary. Due out by end of 2009. Price and release date TBD.

Tekkaman Blade and Pegas - Another early sculpt, price and release TBD. This is a SOUL SPEC release.

SRW Soul of Chogokin Dygengar & Au?senseiter - These look GREAT combined

Chogokin Keitai Sousakan 7. In addition to the main phone, we get the evil black phone and Purple phone - these are not coming to USA.

Mazinger Z was shown with the new version of the SOC - this is a complete redesign and is super poseable. Dammit, i think I am gonna get this.

Hover Pilder - same toy as before, different color. Why not a "R" designation?

Hey, who is this guy?

Discuss. I'll flush out details tomorrow.

You've gotta love Big O. I assume this was made just for those of us over here, since from what I understand,Big O was a flop in Japan.

Oh man, new SOC Maz looks AMAZING! I am so getting that... heavy metal AND great articulation, it's a match made in heaven!

Like the Tekkaman set for nostalgic purposes.

Put off buying a cellphone all this time... if these ones had a keyboard, I'd SO cave in.

And good lord I kick myself every time I see that Tetsujin 28.
Saw it the first time as a Godaikin for $50 at Toys R Us, high up on an unreachable shelf, discounted. I think I bought a Godmarz instead because it was within my reach.

The second time I saw it was 4 years later at The Last Wound-up (sic?) in New York City... for like $900.

It's been years since I saw it online, but there was a nice story regarding that Tetsujin 28. It was like Popy's one last big bang, so they went crazy on the metal.
GREAT article, if you can find it.

Yeah, that Chokinzoku article is here...and you may just have found it by reading this!

I can totally dig that Big O. I hope the fingers are fully articulated (each knuckle!)...they look kinda dumb the way they are now, but they're the only flaw, in my eyes, on such a spot-on toy sculpt. I'd love to see gokin figures of all the Bigs that appeared at the end of the show. Stooopid cartoon, but some definitely wonderful robot designs in there.

Big O did kinda of suck it had a lot of potential to be a classic robot anime. The mecha were cool but the story a yawn... Stupid Dorothy I never saw the end of it all. I bet he'll be expensive like Godmars. SOC is a favorite.

There isn't really that big a demand for any of this kind of stuff,it's a niche market. Even in Japan,I'm sure WAY more people buy 10 dollar Mobile Suit in Action figures at their local Target-san than purchase diecast Mazingers at Shinbury Manga. It's just that the diehard anime fans/collectors (i.e. us) buy so much stuff, the companies can still survive.

EDIT: this isn't very clear,but I'm responding to Jinzo's comment,not knocking these figures. I think they're all pretty cool,Big O espescially.

Tekkaman Blade with Pegasus is great. I only hope Big O gets accesories to perform all of his wicked attacks, including his final super-attack from the series.

Mazinger Z looks great.

So do Tekkaman Blade and Pegas.

As for the Pileder, NO it is NOT the same toy!

It has got some features which make it different such as the console, the front grille and light housings and the overhead cockpit tab.

I know that this would be having my cake and eating it too, but a to-scale release of the Sol-Tekkaman suit would be cool too.

Finally after all these years, a Tekkaman Blade figure! I gotta say that I do love it so far. Although he does look pretty small compared to Pegas... I hope they do a similar release with Tekkaman Blaster as well.

And man does the Daizengar Aussenseiter set looks great! Still going to have to wait on a review before I pick it up though, it's definitely not gonna be cheap.

The last thing is the Mazinger SOC. I thought that it would have been just a recolor and slight mold modification, but it looks much more poseable than the previous Mazinger SOCs. He definitely is much more dynamic than previous figures.

One of those "never-gonna-happen" toys I dream of is the gattai from Big-O which had about two minutes of screen time.

all very cool, only thing I had to learn the hard way...is with bandai...have alot of Patience and wait a long time before you buy, it will normally drop in price or be rereleased ninety times...lol

Well....it's about time Bandai got their lazy asses to do a Chogokin Big O toy. Since that it's SoC I have no doubt that it will have a Roger Smith & R Dorothy included with the masterpiece + pistol power action with the Popeye arms.

I also have no doubt that this black steampunk beauty will have a functional cockpit that opens from the upper chest to put Roger & Dorothy in to co-pilot the mecha.

Now that we know that a SoC Big O is now foreseen and in development.....I can put my mind to ease to know that I won't have to bother getting that stupid Yamato Giant Robo toy and kitbash it to death.

Oh yes....Giant Robo and Daisaku are sissy-slags. They and Shinji w/ EVA01 are made for eachother...There I said it...Let's double date!

I'm glad this toy is coming out (the Big O SoC), but I'm still curious as to why Max Factory's never came out...

And speaking of Max Factory, why does their prepainted vinyl figure NEVER get any love?? I had one for a while until I sold it (because I finally saw the end of the cartoon and got so mad, I wanted nothing to do with this franchise ever again! :P).

The thing was HUGE (over 10"...beat that, SoC!), the colors were deep and gorgeous, and it had a rough-ish texture to the vinyl that captured the matte look of the cartoon perfectly. It's only problem was the lack of articulation: only swivel joints at the neck, shoulders, elbows, and hips. Typical for a vinyl, but not so great for a robot toy. Still, it's size and perfect looks more than made up for the lack of diecast and other features.

Anyway, Rodimus78, I'll admit the Big O design is WAY cooler than the Giant Robo OVA design, and the SoC Big O will probably smoke the Yamato Giant Robo (which was a floppy disaster)...but the Giant Robo OVA is about a million times better than the Big O cartoon. The really important thing to remember, though, is that the original, live-action Giant Robo/Johnny Socko and His Flying Robot and the Soft Garage Giant Robo gokin, utterly DOMINATE all contenders! ;)

Dear Sanjeev:

I'll counteract my admission of logic that Giant Robo OVA is superior to Big O in terms of high production quality...It's an OVA series so go figure. However I still like Big O better because it's not so over-the-top kind of show as Giant Robo. It just annoys me to see that kid riding a giant, steel leviathan like an elephant during a melodramatic fight. It's hard for me to suspend my disbelief for that kind of scenario.

That's one of the reasons I love Big O. The major reason happens to be my fascinations with SF-noir milieu/surreal/avant-garde/pulp-genre mixed w/ stuff.

This doesn't mean that I hate the Giant Robo OVA, I like Giant Robo mind you. I like both of those shows in all respects. I just don't like Daisaku riding that thing like Beany and Cecil. If Bandai decides to make a SoC version of it then I'll consider it, but I'm just too hyped-up for their Big O toy.

As for the vinyl version of Big O....Whoah...I can hardly argue with that one. It looks pretty cool, I admit that with no reserves. If I get me a bigger room than what I have, I'll consider getting one myself.

Soft-Garage Giant Robo Chogokin...man it looks pretty awesome, so awesome that I'm afraid to play with it. I mean like the Fewture Gokin Mazingers, it's a work of art good on display.

PS: A little off the subject here...I apologize for the long-delay. My answer is 'no'. I didn't get your 1st message response on a different subject, but I did get your 2nd reply from your hotmail account. It's probably the CDX's website my have some glitches that keeps me from e-mailing here. But yes, I did get your 2nd reply. I regret to inform that I didn't get the 1st reply from your CDX e-mail account probably due to a glitch in the system.

I thought I tell you that and thank you so much for replying.

Take care til next time.....freedom fighter.

Sure, that's cool. I can totally see the argument for and against both shows. I prefer GR because it had a solid ending...that trumps BO's cool noir stylings. But to each, their own.

Either way, I'm sure the SoC BO will blow any toys of the OVA GR out of the water. Still, if size and looks are your thing, then that Max Factory prepainted vinyl kit is the way to go.

As for those Soft Garage classic GR figures, you've got it all wrong, dude! They DO look awesome, but they're totally built for playing! The joints are tight and the figures are really stable. They're not huge (only around 5"), so picking one up won't make the feet clang together like a Fewture EX Gokin or an Aoshima gokin. The joints will hold even if you shake these guys around.

And glad you got my reply, Rodimus. Good talk!

Josh, you complained about the size of the figure when it was announced to be only 7 inches or so in size. After seeing it in person, is it still small? It's a pricey set but I can't wait to get it.

it looks bigger in person, and the combined mode of the two is enormous. It looks very intricate and involved.

I also saw the big kotobukiya kit in person for the first time - that thing is INSANE.

That Mazinger looks very nice!! It brings a smile to my face. I hope he's solid & reaonbly durable.

Some mecha figs look awesome in pics, but the final product turns out lackluster but I have hope!
