Bandai Chogokin DX Macross Quarter
30 cm tall or about 12 inches tall with "gimmicks to recreate your favorite scenes" and mini Messiah's. Due in the Fall of 2009. Sorry NekroDave, I don't think Macross is going anywhere any time soon. ;)
*first look at the Macross Quarter beyond the same single-angle hard-to-see promo images*
...ugh! O.o!
I think I like my giant transforming fortresses as symmetrical as possible. I mean, what in thee hell is up with this thing having to hold a cannon and shield!? It looks cool 'n all that, but- just...
...Ugh.
Were the ships in "Macross 7" this bad too? (*shudders*)
Even the movie-ver Macross herself looked better than this!
. . .
Anyone ever considered releasing a transformable Macross Cannon...? That would be cool.
I continue to stand by my opinion that anything after "DYRL" and "Macross 2" are poor imitators that can't stand up to the genius of the original function-before-form Kawamori designs.
...well, the VF-11 from "Macross 7" is an exception.

Considering Kawamori worked on most of the other Macross series and did not have anything to do with Macross II, the only thing he's imitating is himself.
I'll add that I don't particularly care for his evolved works in Macross, and possibly his best work is behind him, but Macross seems to be followed by so many sheep now it doesn't matter who is designing it - as long as it has the three modes it's good enough it seems. It's pretty bad when Macross II has the best Valkyrie design beyond the original, and it's not considered canon.
As for this, it's probably the single biggest piece of fan service in a show that is filled with it.
Yeah, except the spaceships in Macross from the SDF-1 Macross itself to all the Zentradi ships and the Destroids were designed by Miyatake, not Kawamori.
Wait wait wait- Kawamori was the series creator, I know that, but he is also the mecha/robot designer (with consultations from Miyatake). So you're saying that the ships were not primarily his design?

Yeppers, Miyatake is credited with primary design of most of the ships as well as all of the destroids in Macross. Even had his own artbook covering his Macross and Orguss designs. He has done this with every Macross series excludeing Macross II.
Kawamori designed all the valkyires as well as Macross series creator, production supervisor, storyboard and script. Thats a lot of hats to wear, especialy while trying to get a anime TV show made on time and within budget.
Miyatake also cleaned up Kawamori's somewhat rough Valkyrie designs to make them ready for the show. Miyatake was Kawamori's sort of sensei at Studio Nue.
The big transformable SDF ships in MacF are exactly the same aesthetic as in Mac7. And I agree that it's a bit too silly for my taste, although it is amusing to see a 500-foot-long space battleship with a Gerwalk mode.
Posted by RobotBastard on 25 February, 2009 - 11:13
It has a psudo-gerwalk mode and I'm not f'ng kidding. It's called the Macross Quarter, because it's a quarter of the size of a standard Macross class ship. Which lends itself to melee combat, yes I said melee combat.
Your fan boy rage over the new designs is pretty funny considering you haven't seen a second of the series. Despite what the ranging fanboys have to say in this thread, it is hands down the best modern anime series to hit in years and a true and proper sequel to the original series. The Quarter is just all sorts of awesome and a 12 inch tall Chogokin version of it will rock. 'Nuf said.
Oh, I've heard many good things about "Macross Frontier", and I would like to see it myself someday. So I'm not bashing on the show at all; I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
All that I am complaining about is the mecha designs- all of these successors to classic designs just don't strike me the same way... and that's not just nostalgia talking either.

PFFT...Geez, talking about contradiction here aren't you EVA? and this coming from a transfan who worships those questionable robot designs from Animated and Bayformers.
What can I say- I likes what I likes and why I likes them is for me to know and not to justify to the world. =)
And to be clear, the Bayformers are cool onscreen even if not the design aesthetic I would have thought would work well in live-action. They are alien technology, so they should look unrecognizable to our eyes. That's Extraterrestrial Biology 101 there.
...not that I was a graduate of that study to begin with. ;)
The toys, on the other hand, were a good effort, but a good share of them also fall flat on their faces (sometimes literally).
End of discussion.

Oh, I need to trick Nekrodave somehow into reading the comments on this post! He'll have a freakin' conniption! ;)
Ah, Macross nerd-bitching...anyway, I might as well add some actual content (rather than bitching about the bitching! :P). repairtechjon, you probably already caught this over at TBDX, but the add to the left of the Quarter in these images (over it's right shoulder) are of the EX-gear skate/hang-glide armor that the pilots wear when flying or wooing chicks on their high school campus.
I thought the show was pretty entertaining.
Edit: HA!! Looks like you already caught that post!
I saw most of the show until it got pulled from Crunchyroll, (with 4 episodes left of course). It's okay, better than the goofy direction Macross went in 7 and zero. It's got some fun nods to the original but about halfway through it just becomes too heavy-handed with the fan service. To the point of having a not-Khyron but might as well be Khyron character in one episode as a villain that - goes against the other Zentradei and attempts a coup.
It just feels like the gave up trying to make new stories and just recycled old ones. But when you come up with crap like 7 and zero, I guess the alternative isn't as bad.
If all you care of Macross is the original show, then it's the Macross show you've probably been waiting for (aside from an actual sequel following Hikaru).
Wow...I'm stunned that this thread has gotten over twice as much play than the 2' Yamato SDF-1 thread. That seems like the much more signficant toy...no disrespect intended towards the Quarter...
Again, Macross fanboy yammering aside, I think this would be a cool toy IF, and only IF, a few conditions are met. First, in battroid(?) mode, the thing needs to be able to stand solidly with both the main gun and the aircraft carrier fully extended out horizontally. That means, it's gotta be cleverly weighted so it won't tip forward AND the shoulder or elbow joints need to be strong enough to support the weight of those parts. Second, it cannot be floppy in ship mode. All the joints need to be tight enough so that you can old the toy in the middle or the back and it'll be sturdy enough to whoosh around the room without going limp. That's the fatal flaw of the SoC Irongear: if you pick it up, it droops in half at the center. Fail.
Of course, these same criteria apply to the Yamato Macross. The original Takatoku/Matchbox SDF-1 fulfilled these brilliantly...so, too, should these new toys, in my opinion.

Okay now, what's that in the poster behind the left side(right shoulder)?
So The Quarter's going to be the same size as G1 Metroplex TF toy.
Outstanding. I would love that fortress-bot to stand right between Metroplex and Omega Supreme in my collection shelf.

I know that the whole franchise- 'cept for "...2"- is his baby, but it's growin' up in a way not likable mecha-wise.
And I agree with absolutely everything you just said in your second paragraph.

I will not be drawn into another debate about my opinions, contradictions, or lack there-of regarding material seen or not seen on CollectionDX.com.
My involvement in this specific thread is finished.

Nobody's drawing you back sir. You have no chain or shackles.
That is an illusion.
That is your choice, not mine. I got what I need.
Duely NOTED.
