I say "completed" in quotation marks because of course there are still variations out there that I should probably get someday, but for the time being, I just wanted one version of each character available in the Shogun Warriors line. And some may find it odd that Dragun would be the last one I would get since he is among the most common and popular ones out there, but I was waiting for just the right specimen, at just the right price.

So, why did I need a particular specimen? Well, it's been awhile since I was cranking out jumbo reviews on a regular basis, but you may remember that I do have the original Popy version. And by all accounts, the first version Shogun Dragun was the exact same toy simply in a different box. So I figured that if I'm going to have more than one toy of the same character, I would like them to be as different as possible. To that end, I decided that I would not buy a Shogun Dragun until I saw a complete, box "lightning legs" version at a decent price.

As you can see, this version replaces the traditional "V" stickers on the legs with some silver lightning bolts.

Why?

Who knows? But this is usually the version that is the least popular so every time I'd say I specifically wanted this version to a friend, they would often wonder what the heck was wrong with me. But variety is important to me. So here are all of my jumbo Getter Dragons.

(l-r) Popy, Mattel, Nacoral, Famosa

(Famosa review forthcoming..)

I'm really glad I held out for that version because when I got it, I noticed some things about it that I didn't know before. For instance, did you notice that the Popy version is shorter than the Mattel version? Why would that be if the only different is the leg stickers? Well, upon closer inspection, I noticed that the feet on the Mattel version are actually modified feet from a Great Mazinger!

I'd never seen this reported anywhere else and it makes me wonder what other barely noticeable differences there are among the various versions that can't be seen without having all of them in one place!

One other difference that WAS known is of course the fact that the spinning sawblades from the Popy version were removed from this version. Also, the star shooter accessory was added to the Mattel version. The first version Mattel one has a strap but this one has the more common clip on version.

My specimen came with 12 stars and three axes.

So, other than pointing out those differences and just adding this toy to our database, there really isn't much more I feel like I can add.

(And yes, I know I haven't reviewed the Shogun Warriors Goldorak. I have it and will do it....later. )

:

The AMP Suit (aka the "Iron Lady") is very cool, but the 3d webcam control gimmick is amazing. A first of its kind.
Includes HD video of the iTag system in action:

Avatar is not the story of the Last Airbender. That was the cartoon. This is James Cameron's Avatar, his latest big budget extravaganza. People are anxiously awaiting this movie, due out in December 2009. Me, I have mixed feelings about it so far, from viewing the trailer. We'll see.

In anticipation of the release of the film, Mattel sent out a bunch of sample toys to us to take a look at. I had been eyeballing this powered suit so their timing was good.

The main gimmick of the Avatar line is the iTag system. The iTag system enables you to have a 3D model of the toy you bought on your computer. But it is not just any model. The iTag system uses a webcam to detect the iTag included with each Avatar toy. Once it locks on, it displays a 3D model of that toy on your screen, on top of the tag you are holding. Turn the tag and the model turns. Tap the info square and an information block appears. It is very, very cool.

To use the iTag system, you must first go to http://www.avataritag.com and download a small application. Once installed, it runs in the browser and allows you to interact with the website.

The AMP suit uses this iTag system to great effect. Just watch this video:

The iTag system is worth the price alone. But the powered suit is not bad either, and for $20 bucks you can't go wrong.

The name "AMP Suit" is short for "M-6 Amplified Mobility Suit". In the movie the AMP Suit is 13 feet tall and six feet wide, with verbally activated cockpit commands, hip mounted 30mm cannon, flamethrower and slashing knife. The toy however is only 9 inches tall, and does not shoot flames.

The box is interesting. It's heavy cardboard and an odd polygonal shape. It looks as if a toy like this would not fit inside, as the box is only 2.5 inches deep. The trick is that it's in a bunch of pieces.

To say some assembly is required is an understatement. You have to attach the cockpit cover, torso, arms, legs and cannon.

Once assembled, you've got an honest-to-goodness solid, playable TOY. It's a lot of fun.

Oh - the pilot figure is not included. I'll review him later.

The cockpit of the AMP suit looks a bit like the front of a helicopter. The clear canopy can open and close. Inside the cockpit there is no painted detail, no stickers. any 3 3/4 figure should fit in just fine as you just stick the figure in a hole - you don't bend the legs. There's nothing for the figure to hold on to, but once again, TWENTY BUCKS.

The shoulders each are on a long curved track that allows the arms to slide backwards. Unfortunately they do not "click" in any position so they have a tendency to move on their own. The shoulders are detented, ans they also have a hinge that swings out. Above the hinged elbow is a swivel joint, and the range of motion is pretty good. The hand is hard rubber and only swivels at the wrist. The hand details are a bit mushy.

The top half can swivel at the waist, but motion is restricted by the attached knife and holder. Why a giant powered suit needs a big crocodile dundee knife is beyond me, but whatever.

The big gun that comes with the toy is actually pretty cool. First, there are rubber ammunition belts that clip into the gun and the back of the body. On the gun it looks like it can clip in two positions. While you can remove the gun from the hand, the ammunition and clip are permanently attached to the figure. The gun is nicely detailed, and big, with several places to hold onto. The main gimmick with this gun is that it is a missile launcher, but the launcher is weak and the thing only comes with ONE missile. Also, the AMP suit has a loose grip on the gun.

It may sound like I am complaining here, but I really am not. Keep in mind, this thing was $20. It's a toy, it's gonna have a few minor flaws, and kids won't care. Collectors may bitch and moan but you just know a company like Hot Toys or Aoshima will make a high-end gokin toy of this. But it is fun to play with, looks good, and the iTag gimmick is fun.

Back when I was a wee lad there were a plethora of what I consider to be "go-nowhere" toy lines that sprang up with only a handful of commercials to promote them. While many of these lines came from prominent manufacturers such as Mattel or Hasbro, they tended to be focused entirely on one gimmick. For Hot Wheels Key Force, "YOU GOT TA HAVE A KEY!"

The overall theme of Key Force was very similar to M.A.S.K. in that it featured conventional vehicles transforming into all different kinds of fighting machines. I honestly don't recall if I particularly wanted the Key Force Van, but in retrospect it is probably the best toy of the line.

The Van starts off as a very "futuristic" six-wheeled vehicle. It rolls along on very squeaky plastic wheels and features some basic paper sticker details. I like the strange paint splatter that adorns the sides. It's like a conversion van of the future.

Each Key Force vehicle came with two plastic keys. One key could be stored on the underside. Enterprising young children were encouraged to keep their duplicate keys on a fake key ring.

Let's unlock the fun!

The lock on the back of the Van releases its inner contents. This futuristic lunchbox on wheels has a helicopter inside. The main rotor is spring loaded and will unfold when the van casing opens up.

The helicopter itself is much nicer than the exterior. Despite the glaring lack of a tail rotor (then again maybe the circular vents are the rotors), it looks almost like a feasible design. I especially like the chrome engine detail and chrome air vanes. The bright orange weapons are a little gaudy. The fact that they come packaged on a parts tree is just asking for sloppy work as little hands weren't always wizened by the ways of Gunpla. Also did I forget to mention you're supposed to extend the pontoons and side guns using the key? Even as a kid I thought using the key for something like that was completely unnecessary.

The back of the helicopter features another key slot which is used to control the flip-out gun turret. Pushing the key inward unlocks the gun and twisting the key rotates the gun left or right. The rotation has never been that smooth and if it was I doubt it would stay that way with constant play.

The final key gimmick is a small bomb on the underside of the helicopter. Inserting the key into a side slot drops the bomb. It's not nearly as exciting as the commercial suggests.

Overall I can see why this line quickly died off with little notice from toy collectors. The key gimmick (pun intended) is just too bulky to allow for anything other than variations on spring loaded panels. Normally I don't go for toys with a lunchbox style of transformation, but this one has enough childlike coolness in the helicopter that I think it stands out from the rest of the line.

This vehicle is arguably, one of the most famous cars in Hollywood history. One of the reasons that I watched the T.V. series when I was a kid was just to see this sinister black car with the huge fins and wicked looking front fascia. Not many are aware of it, but there is quite a story behind the way it came to be....:

The year was 1965 20th Century Fox decided to produce the television series, "Batman". In doing so they approached legendary car builder George Barris and hired him to make a car for the series.

Barris`s first car in mind was a custom using a late fifties Cadillac, but due to time constraints he decided to use a one off car that was built for the auto show circuit. The car I speak of was introduced to the public in 1955 as the "Lincoln Futura". Unbelievably, Barris had this very car in his possession.

The Futura was a most extreme test bed in design and technological features at the time. The car was basically a running mock up, not really intended for the use and abuse of every day driving.

The story is that Barris acquired the car in the early sixties for the kingly sum of 1 U.S. dollar. Little did Barris know that that dollar bill would buy one of the most iconic cars ever produced for television.

After doing a quick image search on the internet, I found this very cool illustrated history below.

From the get go the car was nothing but headaches. Bad brakes, hard starting or not at all, and very unsafe handling. To make it even worse, the frame which was just a mock up, ended breaking in half after just a few shoots. To remedy this Barris used either a '63 1/2 or '64 Ford Galaxy frame. To use this frame he had to stretch it several inches to fit under the extremely long body. Barris probably chose the Galaxy frame due to the fact it was the same frame used under Nascar Daytona race cars, great choice if you ask me.

Along with the new frame, brakes, transmission and engine were also upgraded to improve overall performance of the car. No more having to speed the film up to give the appearance of speed. All this work brought the car from Batmobile disaster to Batmobile fame.

Now let's discuss Mattel's "1966 Batmobile". To start with, the car is a highly detailed replica of the original.

The interior looks very accurate. Black seats and center console, matte silver deck panel and dash insert, sectioned steering wheel. Even a red mobile Bat phone. Some of the features of the car include working steering. Doors that open. Real looking rubber tires and what is supposed to be a non-removable plastic hood (On my car it does come off). This last feature is probably my one and only dislike about this car. When it is removed it reveals nothing but empty space (not shown in pics). What a waste, why couldn't they have made a detailed engine compartment? I mean heck, they went through the trouble of detailing the bottom of the car to give it the illusion of having an engine. Mattel dropped the ball on this! How hard would it have been to put in a plastic turbine engine under the hood? Oh wait a minute, that's how they get you to spend an extra $100 on the 1/18 elite version that also includes a stand. What a ripoff! $100 extra for a detailed engine compartment and a stand! Oh, lets not forget the backdrop!

Complaint aside, I love the quality of the black and red paint work. The plastic canopies look like glass. The steering works nicely. The car is made with sturdy die cast metal, PVC plastic, clear plastic and rubber. When you pick it up the car has a nice solid feel to it.

Overall I feel that the car is good quality 1/18 scale die-cast model. Would I let my son play with it? No way! He'd lose the hood in a heart beat. Would I display it with my collection? Hell yes! Who would not love to stare at this beautiful replica? If you're a fan of Bat Man this is a must have addition to your collection.

Before I get to the actual toy I would like to give you some background on this interesting vehicle design.

"The Beginning of Batman`s Tumbler"

I searched across the internet to get as much info I could about the Tumbler/Batmobile.
I got alot of the info from Wikipedia and How stuff works, both are great sites to gather info! check them out.

2005 The Batmobile alias the Tumbler hit the big screen in the Christopher Nolan directed film Batman Begins. The style of the new vehicle is more based on the Frank Miller tank like creation seen in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel. The film's production designer described the machine as a cross between a Lamborghini and a Tank. In the Nolan films the vehicle is never referred to as the "Batmobile", only as the "Tumbler". One of the main men responsible for design work on the Tumbler is Nathan Crowley.

In "Batman Begins" Bruce Wayne is introduced to a one off prototype built for the military to be able to jump spans pulling cables in order to bridge the span. Bruce is impressed by the vehicle so much that he decides to take it and use it in his personal war against Gotham`s worst.

Here is a list of some of the "Tumbler's" capabilities:

Rear flaps for brake
Front auto-cannons
Rocket launcher
Landing hook for landing stabilization
Integrated fire-extinguishing system
Integrated safety connection to gasoline control
Jet engine on back of car for quick boosts/ramp-less jumps
Stealth mode, which turns off the car's lights and reduces the engine sound enormously, making the car very hard to find in dark places
Road spikes can be deployed from the rear of the vehicle. Batman uses this to immobilize a police vehicle following him.
Front of car is heavily armored, so the car can crash into and destroy objects, and also protects the driver while in the "Attack" mode driving position.
Both front wheels can eject when the vehicle is damaged to form the Bat-pod, a bat-cycle like vehicle (the rest self-destructs).

Now let`s get down to how the car was built. Nathan Crowley started creating the Batmobile by model bashing. Model bashing is a technique where you go to a toy store, hobby shop, hardware store and gather parts of every shape and size. You then cut and shape all of those parts to get the desired look for the car. Nathan built six models like this, all 1:12 scale, before he got the look and the shapes that he wanted. Once he had the scale model, he started on a full-size replica.

The next part of the process was taking a Styrofoam block and carved it by hand. They carved everything, including things like the rubber tires. The first goal is to get all of the proportions right at full-scale. this car is 9 feet 4 inches wide. That's 8 inches wider than the typical 18-wheeler!

The second goal is to have a full-size model that can be used to make things like the body-panel molds and the frame. The car has 65 separate body panels, and each one had to be manufactured on a custom-made wooden mold. To make the steel frame, the Styrofoam model was cut up to get accurate sizing and panel mounting points for the frame. With all this work done the design team built a test frame.

The team went ahead and manufactured four complete, street-ready race cars. Each of these four cars cost about $250,000 to build. These "race" versions of the Batmobile are the cars that careened through the streets of Chicago during filming. From the outside, they look like Batmobiles. Inside, however, they look like NASCAR race cars.

specs for the "Race version"

2.5 tons
9 feet 4 inches wide
15 feet long
HOOSIER racetrack tires on front
4 Rear 44 inch SUPER SWAMPERS, a Four wheel drive conversion component
0-60 in 5.6 seconds. Under full acceleration, the car could actually rise up on its front "legs" while the front wheels stayed planted on the ground creating an effect like a giant spider.
500 hp 5.7-liter Chevy V8 engine

So why'd they build four complete Batmobile race cars? There were two reasons. First, the team expected there to be accidents and wanted to have multiple cars in case one or two wrecked. Think about it: These cars have the ability to go 100 mph but have hand levers to help turn corners. They also are called on to jump 30 feet. Accidents seemed likely. The good news is that no accidents actually occurred* The six months of training and the drivers' skill really paid off(*if you ignore the incident in which a driver rear-ended one of the Batmobiles as the four cars were moving to a new location).

Two of the four cars are special. One is the flap version. It has all of the hydraulics and flaps to handle the close-up shots where the car is "flying." The other is the jet version. Nathan didn't want to "add on" the jet flame with a computer -- he wanted a real jet flame. The car has an actual jet engine fueled by six propane tanks located inside the car. The team can mount and dismount the jet as needed for filming.

There is also another car for the scenes where the "Caped Crusader" pulls up and gets out. It has several unique features. It is loaded with hydraulics to make the opening and closing of the cockpit happen in a realistic way. It has a small electric motor that lets the car drive forward, but there is no massive V-8 engine and no need for the car to drive at a high speed. Plus there is 1:5 scale miniature version which has a electric motor to propel it. this is the version for the roof top scenes.

The Batmobile is real. Every single time you see the Batmobile in the movie, you are seeing a real, physical object, not a computer-generated graphic. Whether it is driving on city streets at 100 mph, landing in the Batcave or pulling up to the scene of a crime, what you're looking at is a real car. When the Batmobile flies 30 feet through the waterfall to land in the Batcave, what's landing is a real, 5,000-pound vehicle. The Batmobile is so real that it actually served as the pace car for a major NASCAR race held in June 2005.

Well enough about the real "Tumbler". Let`s talk about the 1:18 scale Mattel version. To start off with the model is fairly heavy because on the die-cast metal and plastic content. The plastic seems to be sturdy enough for play, but keep in mind that this is a display model.
Visually it is a pretty good replica as far as dimensions and such when compared with the real version. Gold and silver paint detail are plentiful (seen below)
The only real visual flaw is the paint's satin finish. To be more accurate they really should have used flat black. Also the rear rims have gold and black paint, where on the real car it is silver and black.
The overall quality was not what I was expecting. The cockpit canopy would not open or close correctly. Every time I attempted to do so it felt as though it would break in my hands.
As you can see below, You can remove the Batmobile from its stand. This is accomplished by removing 4 screws with a small phillips screwdriver. I feel it looks the be displayed this way.

Even with the negative feelings I have for the paints accuracy and the awkward opening cockpit, I still think this is one "badass" model to display on your shelf. Come on, who wouldn't want the "Batman Tumbler" in their collection? The pictures do not do it justice.... It looks great mounted on it's stand or not. I am happy to have one in my collection.

:

The Shogun Warriors. Invincible guardians of world freedom. These toys are the ones that sparked our imagination back in the late 70s, and shaped our idea of cool. Not everyone had a Shogun Warrior – at the time most kids were busy with more affordable toy lines such as Star Wars, Micronauts and Mego Super heroes. But those of us who got them knew that we were onto something special.

Great Mazinga was one of the original Shogun Warrior characters, and probably the most recognizable. You ask people of that generation if they had one, and they may not recall the name (“Great something?”) but you describe the bright red V on the chest and they go “That’s the one! It shot fists!”

Like the rest of the Shogun Warriors line, Great Mazinga was actually a repackaged Popy toy. The first release of Great Mazinga was simply titled “Mazinga” and was identical to its Japanese Counterpart.

The version shown here is the second version, a greatly dumbed-down version for the american market. Gone are the knee and waist decals. Gone is the multi color scrander with chrome engine nozzles. Nope, this one was clearly designed to be cheap and easy.

It's still a good toy, and its likely the one most kids got back in the day. The whole body is diecast metal with plastic being reserved for the head, chest V and arms.

The arms shoot off with a satisfying "Plink!" when the buttons on the arms are pushed.

Great Mazinga comes with two cheap red plastic swords. These can be held in either hand, but cannot be stored in the legs like with the Jumbo Machinder version.

The scrander is detachable.

The box is a classic example of 70s package design, with the clear plastic tray, die-cut window and side flap. This particular specimen is from the Josh C10 Fraser collection, and I have tried my best to keep it C10. I believe this came out of a sealed case. Yeah, I opened it.

To me, this guy (or any version thereof) is one of the cornerstone pieces of any vintage Japanese toy collection. It is relevant in so many ways, it set the stage for so much that was going to come. One can argue that this toy was the one that sparked the imagination of kids in the late 70s, fueling our now current frenzy for all things giant and robot.

:
