TRON Legacy toys!

Posted: 28 October, 2010 - 21:28

I was heading towards the costume department when, lo, I passed an entire end-cap of TR2N merch! Bad news for my costume budget!

I liked everything I saw, but I will never understand the two separate action figure line concept, where there's a 3 3/4" and a 6" assortment. It seems like one of these concepts is destined to fail. They looked cool, but I passed on them and picked up a Die-Cast Recognizer and Kevin Flynn Light Cycle, which I haven't opened just yet, since I like to savor the experience over a few days. There are 7 vehicles total pictured on the card back, and Spin Master is advertising a second wave which I hope will feature designs from the original film. The thing that hooked me on the Die-Cast assortment is the "to scale" Recognizer collectors case. Nice touch!

I'm still a little nervous about the film itself (flesh tones, updated apres-cyber punk design, Daft Punk) but all of this new stuff is helping me get psyched up again.

We'll be covering a boatload

We'll be covering a boatload of TRON legacy toys (light cycles are up soon), but first impressions are vehicles = good, figures = bad.

We'll see...

Toys vs. Collectibles

The detail on the figures isn't great, but then again these are toys in the strictest sense. I think we, as adult collectors, have a tendency to confuse the product being offered by a company like Spin Master when compared to the ridiculous level of quality produced by Hot Toys. They look to be on par with any other manufacturer other than Bandai or Hasbro, the masters of the game.

The thing that kills these action figures for me is the price point; $9 and $10 for the little guys is pretty steep. Whatever happened to $7 or $8? At these prices, quality and detail become a legitimate consideration regardless of your position on Toys vs. Collectibles.

Oh, snap!

Hey man, I'm not calling anyone out, just making an observation. In mentioning Hot Toys it appeared that you were stacking mass marketed trinkets against a specialty niche, which is something that calls for clarification. I'm still not sure how you view these items because you remark they suck as toys AND collectibles. Just saying, as it might not be a contradiction since these "things" are still accessible enough for the kids who would much rather be enjoying collectible card and video games.

If you're the guy reviewing this stuff then I'll look forward to your typically entertaining report, otherwise, I know you're not an "amateur," Atom. Seriously though, what constitutes being a "Pro" and are you really trying to do that to yourself? It's a hobby, brother, sheesh!

I'm sorry you went full monty

I'm sorry you went full monty with these things. I stopped doing that years ago after the same hard lesson.

I did, however, go back and buy a Clu Sentry just to see what you're talking about in terms of quality, and guess what; the toy sucked!

Paint and sculpt are par, imo, and there are some missed opportunities, but my real problem is that the thing is broken.

Seriously, one leg wouldn't move. What are the odds that the one toy I buy would be defective?

I saw these at TRU and they look like total trash. I'm in no way an elitist, most of my toys are kid's toys (rather than collectibles) bought on sale or clearance. That said, there's a difference between quality kid's lines like SW and Marvel U,and flat out shoddy products like Tron.

Of course I may be biased since I hated Tron 1 (if you have an elementary schooler's knowledge of computers it doensn't make any sense) and I'm only going to see this one because I'm excited about Daft Punk scoring another film.

I don't understand why my above post looks weird, did I quote myself or something?
