  • Ok, well, maybe I should have said it just looks cooler.

I've only seen the eva TV series, and only once, so I am by far an EVA authority. However, after the 9 millionth eva toy that looks basically the same, this is a welcome change.

  • Agree. For a Summit that really sort of seemed to come together at the last minute, I'd say it was one of the best ones yet. Thanks to everyone who came and hope to see more next time...

  • "Fans of Evangelion will be all over this figure..."
    .
Hah...? Speak for yourself-! I'm not impressed by the F-type equipment at all! It, like, completely ruins the spirit of the EVAs! :( Typical upgrade problem- improve it by making it more powerful that it originally was by completely breaking with what has already been established. :P

    • The only energy weapon(s) that the EVAs ever used were the 'regular' Positron Cannon (held under-the-arm fashion) and High-Powered Positron Rifle (looks like a long sniper's rifle), and it takes quite a bit of power to run those (all the electrical power of Japan for the latter!).
    • Having such thick armor is pointless on an EVA to begin with. With the ability to deploy AT Fields- which are strong enough to withstand point-blank nuclear blasts- what's the point of weighing down their bodies with excess materials?
    • On that second point, by the time the F-type equipment was developed, batteries would no longer be needed since they would have perfected the S2 Engine by then and made the EVAs self-sustaining. (Besides, remember what happened to Unit-01 after the 14th Angel struck...?) The external batteries that we saw about mid-way through the series were designed to be jettisoned to lighten the EVAs' loads. Only thing you'd need batteries for might be those cannons on the utility wings, but two things: 1- the amount of power needed couldn't possibly be held in those batteries for more than one shot; and 2- you'd still need to worry about the EVA's own power-consumption needs (specifically Units -00', -02, and -03).
    • Why make a different kind of stylized Progressive Knife shaped like that? Progressive weapons don't cause damage because they are sharp and pointed- they cause damage because they vibrate on the molecular level.

One of the things that was revolutionary about the designs of the Evangelion Units was how slim and not-bulky they were, a complete contrast from mainstream designs from shows like "Gundam".
    .
I never liked the F-type design. You'd only need to look at the D-type used by Unit-02 to see that flaw- it didn't improve on anything. Quite the contrary, it was even more limiting for the red-&-orange EVA despite the protection from the magma it provided.

  • Dare I say THIS turned out to be the best score toy wise I have ever had. I got me one of those Classic Jetfire’s and it is just the coolest toy and a Max Genius 1/48 Valkyrie which I have been wanting since it was released. 

I just want to encourage readers to come next year as it really is A LOT of fun to get together with my fellow geeks and talk toy.

It was a blast guys and I had a lot of fun. It was nice to meet so many of you.

  • I made a mistake. I said "Mars Base" when I meant to say "Moon Base". Too much Macross and Mospeada.

Well, HLJ (and several other companies) sent some stuff to the Summit to raffle off to those in attendance. I'm sure Josh will have a writeup of the whole event before too long.

(Heh- almost put my username in the header of this message...! ;) )
    .
    O.o? HLJ had/has a raffle...!?
    .
A display base didn't even occur to me. Though, now that I think about it, it would have been pretty awesome if it were a storage bay shaped like a Cage! (For those of you who don't know, the EVAs' massive underground hangar bay is called "[the] Cage" by characters in the show. Don't ask me why this is though. I suspect that since the EVAs are 'restrained' within by being clamped down on by the moving walls, that's where the reference may come from.)
    .
I debated whether or not to mention the loose jaw fitting, but I figured that since it doesn't open that far anyways, it wasn't really worth mentioning. And to be honest, the jaw isn't really that loose! Just when you try to struggle to get the head into a good position.

  • Evangelion Unit-01

I was lucky enough to win this as a raffle prize (courtesy of the good folks at hlj.com) at the Summit this weekend. I totally agree with your review. This pretty easily beats the regular SOC version, imo, even with the problem with the head. In fact, on mine I noticed that if you turn the armored head too far, it would actually pop off the jaw. No worries though. I think I'm gonna display mine with most of the armor on, but the head and hands exposed. :)

A base for the many parts WOULD have been nice. Perhaps they should have released a display base that included the damaged parts instead of just another version of the toy. I'd be more inclined to buy that than a whole extra figure. Boy, I really hope this doesn't start me buying SOC Spec toys now!

I hated the designs of the new movie at first, now I am just ambivalent towards them. I would have liked the designs better if they were a little closer to the original G1 toys, but in terms of seeing a movie about giant robots these will suffice.
I saw your video review of "Classics" Rodimus, nice job! I must admit that I was also suprised by the quality of the line. I think the best toys in the "Classics" line are Optimus, Jetfire(Skyfire), Mirage, and Bumblebee. I urge people who are curious TF "Classics" to start off with those. Another new TF worth buying is "Cybertron" Downshift.

I am sure Scatman Crothers would have loved to be in the new movie but, uh...he died in 1986. But yes it is a cool toy. :) Thanks for reading.

  • Jazz

Yes I'm one of those put off by the new designs but regardless this is one great looking toy!

The real big loss of the new Transformers Film is that Benjamin Sherman "Scatman" Crothers won't be performing Jazz's voice, I'm sure he would of loved to have been part of a project like that! This review should be dedicated to him.

    Thank You for the review!

    Cheers

I've seen some of the other guys and i wasn't impressed. But man, This does look like a nice toy. I agree that, at first blush, he seems chunky. But from the photos he holds up great!

Gotta say she's one of the hotter PVC releases. I really like the pose on her too. Nicer than just the average cheesecake.

  • Josh, you may be right about the third figure being Jet Li--it's really tough to tell from that pic...let alone from the fact that the figures aren't exactly all that super-accurate to begin with...!
    .
But I'm gonna throw down a guess for Liu Chia Hui, a.k.a., Gordon Liu. Now THAT dude's a kung-fu legend!! Plus, he's often seen with a shaven head, unlike Jet Li.

  • I'm so thrilled that they're doing new Wingman figures. I love that armor design.

  • Wow those weapons for the EVAs for the upcoming "Rebuild of Evangelion" film look sweet-! Looks like they went for more stylized versions of the High-powered Positron Rifle and the improvised shield (originally the underbelly of a space shuttle orbiter) which both debuted in Ep.6 of the series to combat the awesome power of the 5th Angel rather than the function-before-form practical style of the originals. Are those for the Revoltech series, or the LM-HGs?
    .
Nice--! The EVAs get brand new chainguns! Ass-kickin' weapons, those. ;) I also wonder if the two katana-styled Magoroku-Exterminate Swords (aka, "Progressive Sword(s)") will finally make an appearance in an official anime rather than just being an accessory for models and games all the time, like they are here...?
    .
Okay- so far, the repaint of Unit-00 has included much more white than the original did. But now they're adding more black to that!? Make up your minds! Sheesh!
    .
Since it's looking more-and-more likely that the first film will be a retelling of Ep.5-6, I wonder if the 5th Angel is getting a makeover as well...? Anyone here see the unrelated concept artwork of the [5th] Angel that was made by Weta Workshop ("The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "King Kong" remake, "The Chronicles of Narnia" series) for the upcoming-but-long-delayed "Evangelion" live-action movie? I wonder if it'll be something like that for "Rebuild..."

  • Oh.

I guess I didn't make it clear, but not only did the space Nazis kill all the scientists, they burned down the lab. I assume the machine (or whatever) was totally destroyed. This is Baldios! It's too depressing for hope!

The Ideon movies are on our list of things to do, and Ideon is also supposedly super depressing.

We hadn't really planned on Daikengo, because neither of us has a copy, but we will see if we can find some episodes to review. I have some random episodes of Zambot 3 in Italian or Spanish or some romance language, so maybe we will give that a go, but we also have another obscure robot coming up, Dai Apollon.

  • I'm a huge fan of the forgotten 80's robots, and I loved hearing about Baldios.

It seems like it was the style for everything that was made in that period to be horribly depressing, but Baldios sounds even worse than most. What happened to the magic fix everything machine that the military shot the scientists over? I kept expecting someone to say that someone still had it, and it could save the Earth. Oh well.

Is there any chance that you'll cover Daikengo? The robot from that show looks more like Baldios then Baldios does.
