  • I second that on both your remarks on Tokyo Underground, REX-203!

I must say, though, that these types of figures do not appeal to me, so I will not be getting one. I will not say they're a bad idea, though!

  • Just got mine in the mail today...

Yet even more awesome having it here than seeing it in the pics! *w00t*

I should also add that Tokyo Underground is one gorgeous piece of bookwork. Whether I ever make it to Japan or not, this book is a total must have. Nice work on that too Josh!

  • Ah, thanks.

It's hard sometimes to differentiate between some plastics, since I can't find solid descriptions of what they are or where you find them in toys; I sometimes have to guess what the materials are and hope no one complains or harasses me about it! ZincPanic.com wrote an article on them one time, but when I wrote them for clarification, they didn't respond. I know that ABS is a common hard plastic that doesn't flex unless it's really thin; and PVC is a softer plastic which can sometimes flex in normal thickness, but is lighter than ABS. Die-cast is obviously metal. But beyond that, I don't know. Someone help!

  • POM (Polyoxymethylene) aka Delrin is a very strong plastic with properties similar to metal.

The joints on the Yamato 1/48 Valkyries connecting the front and back torso halves are POM.

It's becoming the new "it" material for toys instead of diecast metal. I imagine it's more expensive than ABS or PVC and usually only used for joints or parts that are subject to stress or lots of movement.

  • Oooooooh- someone's jealous of Organic Hobby's Revoltech line and wants a share of the popularity...

BTW, what is "POM" material? ABS and PVC I am familiar with, but not that one.

  • Baxinger? I loved my old "Motorcycle Voltron" back when I had it 25 years ago and had no idea what it was called.

How about some Gad Domn Dorvack love? Or possibly a Giant Gorg?

Since these don't have the Revoltech joint, and are the same size as the RT toys, the extra 1,000 yen in the price is a bit of a downer. I guess the use of POM and ABS makes the production more expensive than the PVC heavy RTs.

  • A suggestion-or-two off the top of my head for these 'live' broadcasts, Josh: don't keep the laptop screen facing the camera. We can't possibly read what's on there unless you zoom in on it!

Also, while I really like the "in the moment" feel of the report (geeks sharing their collecting passions together is awesome, huh?), searching for stuff during recording looks a little, ummmm... 'amateur-ish'(?) and uncoordinated. Do bring up stuff off the top of your head, but I suggest leaving a list (visible only to you and not the camera) to remind you of facts, figures, etc. This will show that you know what you are talking about rather than being just a couple of talking heads on YouTube.

Oh, BTW- you recorded this in a kitchen???

  • I don't watch the TF boards (maybe I should start doing so?), so I don't know how much people like/dislike ...Animated. I know the style of animation is very controversial. It's only been, like, a month since it came out, right? I recall that a LOT of people disliked Beast Wars when it first came out because it used no vehicle modes ('TRUKK NOT MONKY' or something along those lines), but then they warmed up to it and it grew to be one of the most popular TF series yet. (Beast Machines... not so much, I agree.) I was under the impression that ...Animated is operating along similar lines as both a series and a toy line.

I've been keeping track of ...Animated via YouTube. While, yes, some Ep. are better than others, I like it so far; though I can't compare it to G1/G2 or the Unicron Trilogy. I am, however, unquestionably gonna snatch up some of those ...Animated sets (in-scale only!) as soon as I possibly can!

  • Thanks for the comment. We're still ironing out the format of this thing, and we plan on getting good mikes for the future.

    Thanks!

  • The TF animated show is bad, but the toys are really nice looking. Check them out and see for yourself. They're probably the closest sculpt to screen toy I've ever seen, and both modes look perfect.

These are the best fusion of transforming toy and urban vinyl style.

  • Aside from the Transformers animated series (which suck) that you talked about, nothing else is familar. Still I found it quite funny listening to you guys talk about all the other toys... nerds and all. It should be a fun 4 days.

Funny stuff. Improve the lighting and audio next time. Do it like the 'that 70s show' rotating discussion. That would be really funny. :)

  • Those jerks can't seem to get their shit straight, and keep making the exact wrong thing people want.

If they are going to tie up the licenses for properties such as Mospeada, Macross, and anything connected to that licensing mess that is Robotech, they better do something with it instead of showing toys for 3 years and not producing them.

What's next, Macross shoes for each pilot that come with a matching 1/100 Valkyrie? Oh shit, I hope they don't read that, they'll probably do it.

Either produce some decent stuff or drop the license so other (better) companies can finally offer their wares here.

  • I never realized how much louder you guys talk than me. You REALLY need to get one of those big red "ON AIR" signs...

Toy Fair should be fun, but I'm probably glad I'm not staying all 4 days. ;)

  • Well the super robot may not impress many, but storyline is one of (if not) the *best* I have ever seen in any mecha anime. I would say it even beats others such as Grendizer (yes I know it's my favourite) and Getta Robo/Getta Robo G. Even Gaiking. It wasn't just about robots fighting, but a lot of creativity went into the story itself.

The suspense combined with the whole idea of battling it out for a new planet really adds to the story. Not to mention how at first it was on Earth and then into outer space.

As for Danguard Ace as a robot, it is an interesting machine and I think the weapons are creative, sometimes it can surprise you in its abilities.

Unfortunately, this series did not receive the justice it deserves in the watered down Force Five dub, mind you, out of the 5 Force Five series, I think dubbing was done best in this one.

Someone should subtitle this series in its entirety.

  • Ralph Bakshi did the old rotoscoped LOTR movie, not the Hobbit animated movie. That was Rakin Bass and Toei.

Destroy All Pod...   16 years 10 weeks ago
  • Well, the titles we select are for a number of reasons. We tend to pick ones we have something to say about (for instance, titles we are completely in love with or totally hate) or little-known titles that deserve more attention, or simply titles that other podcasts aren't talking about. We also are not ashamed of our love for sci-fi, robot, or giant monster anime/film the way many anime-related podcasts are.

As for Windaria specifically, I just don't have a copy! If I see it around at a video store I will totally pick it up. We are also trying to work our way through the Streamline and Best Film & Video/Celebrity Just For Kids! libraries. Many of these titles are stellar or just bizarre and difficult to come by or pretty much unknown these days because they never made the transition to DVD in the US. But yeah, we definitely don't want to talk about the same shows every other podcast is discussing, especially if we don't have anything super unique to say about them.

As far manga goes, less manga is out here in the US than Japan for sure, but another issue is that a lot of manga is really long and we don't usually like to talk about something we haven't seen/read the entirety of. Another issue is that reading manga is not a group activity the way watching a movie or TV is, so it kind of puts a damper on hanging out and watching stuff, or in the case with Andrew, he lives 2,000 miles away from me so it's a pain to make sure we both have the same manga. It's cheap to mail a DVD but not so cheap to mail 10 books.

We are planning to do a little more manga in the future, but the focus is probably still going to be on anime and live action asian films.

You may have noticed that lately we've been doing some kung fu films and such, and we plan to continuing expanding there into new types of asian live action films.

  • I like this, if only for the dude in the stomach. He looks so gun ho about piloting this strange robot. I'm rooting for you, stomach man! Go kick some ass!

  • You guys sure covered a load of Streamline dubs, but I noticed you missed out Windaria.
The dub on Windaria is arguably one of worst dubs Streamline put out.

As for feedback, I gonna drop some when you guys first started off, but I guess I forgot. Anyway, here we go!

I noticed whenever you review bad anime/movies, you don't pick anything that's cliche (e.g. MD Geist,"Manos": The Hands of Fate etc). I have to say, this is a nice change from half the stuff I used to listen to.
I've also noticed not much manga gets covered, besides the dreadful Zeorymer manga and some of JJBA. I don't know if it's because older stuff is getting harder to find (The oldest manga I own in English is probably GREY or Baoh) or if you're just not that big on covering it.

Anyway, great show as usual, you guys are totally ace.

  • You keep your stupid comments to yourself, and if you have something to say to me, you say it directly. Don't take the liberty of backbiting people on forums like this as it only illustrates how weak you are. Sanjeev said it straight. Only dogs bite the hands that feed them.

  • Congrats for the limited edition figure. it looks very very nice... and the shirt, it's cool. gonna be even cooler if I wear it on upcoming Toyafair in my country.

Berserk   16 years 11 weeks ago
  • Remember the old SEGA Genesis game, 'Last Battle'? I knew it was a retitled Fist of the North Star game (it's a bit too obvious when Kenshiro's jacket shreds as he powers up). Was this game popular in Japan, or was it just as sucky as in the states? It had repetitive fight levels, a maze between levels, boss fights that are way harder than the regular fights, having only one life... eck.

  • That looks awesome. I haven't collected any kaiju or vinyl stuff yet, but this is gonna be a nice start. lol Especially love the color scheme, Josh. Too awesome.
