If your only making 300 pieces of a collectible, is it really asking to much to not get a screwed up one? :

From what I remember as a child of the 70's (and now as an adult collector today) is that the soft vinyl toy was meant as a inexpensive impulse buy. They would come in a plastic bag with a simple cardboard header card and be cheap good Kaju (in most cases) fun. 30 years later it's evolved into quite the collecting scene. While I “get” the newer renditions of Kaiju monsters in glow and clear styles, this emerging “Art Toy Collectible” thing on the other hand just baffles me. So color me surprised (and interested) when MINDstyle started showing off their prototype of V.I.N.CENT from Disney's film The Black Hole and saying that 300 would be available at San Diego Comic Con 2009.

I love V.I.N.CENT. and the film The Black Hole. I currently had nothing from the film in my collection and wanted an almost 9 inch tall version on my shelf, but the price... $130 dollars. Yikes! For that kind of money, I am used to getting diecast metal and firing fists but friends that are more involved with this kind of collectible assured me that it had some quality paint applications and would be worth the cash. Besides who is doing anything from The Black Hole these days? Nobody. So I figured I would “know” if I wanted it when/if I saw it at SDCC09. So on Preview Night I did find myself passing MINDstyle's booth and there he was looking awfully spectacular but I just couldn't justify spending the money...

Well in the 11th hour on the last day of the Con, Shogunnadia and Shogundan surprised me with the gift of V.I.N.CENT.

The Black Hole is one of those films that made a huge impact on me as a kid and as an adult I think a) the film still holds up pretty well after all of these years and b) completely floors me that it ever got made. It starts as a Star Wars family adventure and ends as abstractly as Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It's the story of the crew of the space explorer Palomino as it discovers the science vessel Cygnus (reported missing many years earlier) floating of the edge of a Black Hole and their adventure dealing with the Madman/Genius Dr. Hans Reinhart as he plans to take them into the black hole. I am over simplifying the plot a bit and not doing the film real justice. It's a dark, moody and intellectual film that touches on some great sci-fi and philosophical tenants. Honestly it is very un-Disney-like and it may not be everyone's cup of tea. If you haven't seen it you should at least once.

V.I.N.CENT. was R2-D2 and C-3P0 rolled into one and voiced by the talented and often underrated Roddy McDowall. All the robots in the film are aesthetically well designed and characteristically memorable. While most seem to consider the evil Dr. Hans Reinhart's Maximilian their favorite from the series, I was always more of a V.I.N.CENT. guy myself.

MINDstyle went with a vintage style package to accentuate the 30 year anniversary of the movie. It's a thick die cut box with a lid that wraps around the box and a magnetic clasp to keep it closed up. It's a very nice package really but can't help but wonder if they couldn't have saved everyone 30 bucks on the price by just sticking it in a bag with a header card... but then I guess it wouldn't be an “Art Toy Collectible” then would it? Oh well, fancy box goes in the closet with the rest...

Inside, V.I.N.CENT. is wrapped in a plastic bag (like all classic sofubi) and a card from MINDstyle telling me this was number 56/300 in the SDCC09 “distressed edition” run. In the bag is also a small stump or “third-leg” if you will to brace the figure upright. He stands 8 1/2 inches tall and is almost as wide.

The first thing I notice is just how big and heavy it is. For vinyl it sure has some weight to it and can confirm that it indeed hurts when it falls forward off your computer shelf and lands on your head.

Initially the paint detail is fantastic. All the hand done application (75 different hits of paint to be exact according to MINDstyle's blog) is more than excellent but the pad printing on mine is noticeably screwed up. And not just in a little way...

Right on the front of the main body it looks like the pad “slipped” for the designation number markings or they put the piece in the bag before it was dry. I'm thinking the first really. How does someone not catch this while is going through the painting process?

The rest is all good. The sculpt detail is phenomenal and looks exactly like V.I.N.CENT from the movie.

Sadly he does NOTHING. The head doesn't turn, rise or lower. The “legs” or anti-gravity generators do not extend and neither do his laser guns or claws. I guess action features and articulation aren't really expected on a piece like this.

For all their lip service to these being “art” and “collectible” I find it hard to believe that nobody from MINDstyle noticed such an obvious printing error. So whether no one was really paying any attention or they did see it and figured it was good enough, I ended up with a less than perfect piece. If your only making 300 in the run, is it really asking to much to not get a screwed up one? It just seems to reinforce my take on the whole “designer/vinyl scene” and leaves a bad taste in my mouth... “You'll take what we sell you and like it!”

With that said, I do love having an almost 9 inch tall likeness of one of my favorite robots of my childhood added to the shelves. A regular edition appears to be due in September for the low, low price of $149.99. I'm really not convinced it's worth that asking price.

Island Of Terror was released in 1966 and although it's been a while since I've seen it, I remember it being a rather underrated movie. Or maybe I shouldn't say underrated as much as unknown. It's certainly not one of the movies that immediately comes to mind when you think of Peter Cushing, but maybe that speaks more for his illustrious career than it does against this film.

When I placed my first order with Ultratumba Productions, I decided to have them throw in these little resin figures as well, mostly because they were cheap. I didn't expect to like them as much as I do.

These Creatures of Terror (aka the Silicates) come in a small (approximately 5"x5"x2") cardboard box with a picture of the product on the lid and brief assembly instructions on the side. The figures rest in a styrofoam tray.

The creatures themselves are just these big green blobs that would slither along the ground and attack with their long tentacles. On these figures, the tentacles are flexible and need to be attached, but a small dab of super glue will take care of that. Each piece comes pre-painted. The biggest one (without the tentacle) is a bit shy of 3" in length while the two smaller ones are less than 2" long (not including the tentacles).

One thing that may seem minor, but that impressed me, is that the two little Silicates are actually unique sculpts. You don't really notice it in pictures, but to see them in person confirms it. When I ordered them, I fully expected the same sculpt on both would be used as a cost cutting measure so I was pleasantly surprised to see they they made the extra effort to make them distinguishable from one another, in a way besides just having a differently shape tentacle.

I find that these are great "filler" pieces in my monster display. With their small size, you can fit them just about anywhere and they add a unique flavor to the overall display.

But here's the best part of all.... each individual Silicate has a MAGNET embedded in the bottom!! Yep, if you'd rather not have them on your shelf, you can leave them on your fridge!

The idea of putting magnets in these was a stroke of genius. For a mere $9, these have been one of the better bargains that I've acquired in my monster collection.

:

The likeness to 4-LOM is phenomenal. The detail in the sculpt and paint is really fantastic. The finish looks like weathered metal and 4-LOM looks like he could come alive at any moment.:

4-LOM, as you may or may not know, is one of my obsessions. Ever since I got that little Zuckuss toy as a kid, I have been smitten with his design. It should be only natural then that I would find my way to Kotobukiya’s Bounter Hunter Series Kit.

Behold - Evidence of my obsession:

Koto’s kits are known throughout the world for their craftsmanship, quality, and insane amount of detail. Each piece is treated with such reverence – nothing feels cheap or shoddy.

The box on this thing reflects the level of regard that this toy is held in. Thick, solid, glossy cardboard with beautiful printing all around. There is a small window that allows for a peek inside at the figure within.

The box separates at the bottom and slides up, revealing the clear plastic tray. Each piece is wrapped in plastic and held in place with twisty ties.

Like all of these larger character kits from Kotobukiya, they are really statues that require minor assembly. For this release you have to attach the arms, legs and head to the torso. The gun adheres to the hands, completing the statue.

The completed figure rests in a base where there are deep holes for the feet. One of my gripes is that the feet have a ton of plastic at the bottom to go in these holes that make it virtually impossible to stand up without the base. Don’t want to display it with the base? Too bad.

El Baron here represents a landmark occasion for me. I finally gave real model building a try. Honest to god glue and paint type model building. I've mentioned before how common this is for monster collectors so I knew it would only be a matter of time before I had to give it a go myself, and when I saw how cheap this kit from Ultratumba was, I figured it was as good a time as any.

El Baron comes from the movie "El Baron del Terror", which is more widely known in the the US as The Brainiac. This is a movie that I vividly remember seeing clips of on the old late night celebration of cult movies, Reel Wild Cinema, but I never actually saw the entire movie until just recently. If you are unfamiliar with it, it is viewable online.

EL BARON DEL TERROR!

This kit by Ultratumba is great for beginners like me. Not only is the initial cost cheap, but construction of the main body is very simple. All you need to do is to line up the arms and glue them onto the body. You can fill in the seams at the shoulders if you like, but it really doesn't need it too much and I didn't bother to do that on mine. Both legs and the pelvis are one solid piece and attach easily as well. Then you can choose which tongue you'd like to display and glue that on. I thought the curved one looked a bit more interesting so I chose that over the one that is straight. Lastly, just add a drop of glue to the bottom of the feet and attach to the base, although I thought it was best to paint the figure before doing this.

As with any model kit, you can choose whatever colors suit your fancy. Of course, with the original movie being in black and white, there's really no set color scheme that you need to match, but I chose to stick pretty close to the image on the box. For a first try, I wasn't looking to be very creative here. I just wanted to get it to look good enough to display.

Ok, well maybe that's not entirely true. As you know, we here at CollectionDX love all things glow so I figured I would try to use up some leftover glow paint that I had while I was at it. But where on a piece like this would glow be appropriate? I decided that painting the tongue with red glow paint would be the most obvious place to start. And after having what I considered to be a bit of success with painting this, I guess I decided to get a bit crafty after all and try adding a touch of glow paint to the eyes and teeth. I don't exactly have the hands of a surgeon as they say so I was really afraid I was pushing my luck to try to paint such tiny areas, but overall, I think I did a pretty good job for a first try.

Well, that's all well and good, but really, I felt like having just a small amount of glow on the face was not quite enough. The glow was too localized. So what to do then? Well, as you see in the movie, this character comes to Earth in a meteor so although it's not exactly in the movie, I thought it would be neat to add a touch of glow to the base to represent a sort of "star dust" sprinkled on the ground around himk. So, I decided to mix in a small amount of glow paint with the regular paint for the base in the hopes that it would produce the desired effect. I think it did!

El Baron is limited to only 250 pieces and comes with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity. It was a pretty fun kit to build and great for a beginner like me. I was always too hesitant to try this in the past because so many kits are expensive and I was afraid I would be wasting my money if I tried and failed. This one was not only inexpensive, but it gave me the confidence to try the second in this series of Mexican movie monster kits from Ultratumba, the Aztec Mummy. Coming soon!

:

After a few 12" dolls and a 16" vinyl robot, now Amok Time brings us their first fixed pose statue. And so far I'd say it's my favorite entry in their short existence as a toy maker. This statue is a sure fire winner for monster collectors and Vincent Price fans. It depicts Vincent Price in the guise of a vicious member of the Spanish Inquisition, as he prepares to torture a victim, during the classic 1961 movie The Pit and the Pendulum. This was a great role for Price and one of the best Edgar Allan Poe inspired films that he collaborated on with Roger Corman and A.I.P.

ORIGINAL THEATRICAL TRAILER

The statue comes packaged safely in a large 2-part styrofoam tray. Unfortunately, this makes the box a bit bigger (16.25"x12.75"x9.5") than I was expecting for a 12" piece, but it's a necessary evil. The box itself is a beautiful presentation showing the statue in closeup on the front and back and in a wide shot on each side. The back also features an image of the original theatrical one sheet poster, in addition to information about the item and it's makers.

The statue is limited to only 500 numbered pieces, with mine being number 458. Also, it has the approval of the Vincent Price estate. And why wouldn't it? It's a gorgeous piece and the sculpt is an amazing likeness of the man.

In addition to just looking amazing, this statue also has a couple of unique features that I'd like to touch on. First, it actually incorporates magnets into the design! Both hands need to be attached when you take it out of the box but they simply pop right on (and off later if need be) because there are magnets in the wrists and in the sleeves. This was a really great idea. In fact, in hindsight, I wish it had been included in the Saucer-Men statue from Ultratumba so that you could swap out the alternate hands instead of having to pick which one to glue in. Oh well, maybe next time.

The next thing that I really like about this one is that the cauldron of burning coals actually lights up red! This is a great effect and looks really nice in person. It was a bit hard for me to show it properly both in pictures as well as in the video review, but take my word for it, the effect is superb.

The effect requires 2 AA batteries but those are included in the package. The on/off switch is simply on the back side of the base, out of view, but easily accessible.

Overall, I have absolutely zero complaints with this item, which is rare. There's almost always something that could have been done just a little bit better, but I can't think of anything to improve on this one. Maybe a higher production run so that no one misses out? To be on the safe side, go get yours at Amoktime.com before they sell out!

Here's another example of me messing up and not heeding the advice of a friend. When this statue was released back in 2002, it was recommended to me that I get it. But again, I wasn't into statues at the time and I passed. And unlike the Uncle Boris statue, I had to pay a premium to get it on the after market later.

Vampira, real name Maila Nurmi, was a TV horror host in the 1950s and generally regarded as the first in that tradition. Unfortunately, there's not much footage remaining from her show, but here's small clip.

Of course, she might be better known to modern audiences for her role in the 1959 camp classic Plan 9 From Outer Space...

...which was in turn made more famous by the movie about it's famous director, Ed Wood.

Of course, the punk rock crowd may have heard of her from the Misfits song that they wrote about her, which I quote in the front page summary.

Anyway, enough about history, what about the statue? Well, it's beautifully crafted by Thomas Kuntz and stands about 14.25" tall. The likeness to Vampira is superb and the paint job excellent.

The fingers on the right hand are particularly impressive. I have no idea how they managed to make a mold that can achieve that pose. Check out how the fingertips are touching the chest, but the rest of the hand is raised.

The cloth hanging from her arms is also impressive and being so thin I'm always being extra careful not to bump it into anything for fear it might crack. The statue is molded right onto a circular base. Beneath the base are four little felt backers to cushion the resin against the surface it rests on. Nice touch.

The statue comes in a nice box with a picture of it on the front, a painting of it on the back and a portrait of Vampira on the side, along with a comprehensive biography by the artist. The bottom of the box, as well as of the statue, tells you which number you have. Mine is number 51 of 1000.

I'm a bit ashamed to admit that I never actually saw Mad Monster Party? until earlier this year when I picked up a used copy of it on dvd. Unlike most of the famous holiday specials produced by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin, Jr. (together known as Rankin/Bass Productions, Inc.), I think Mad Monster Party? was released to theaters as opposed to airing on television. But it's been on video for years and I have no excuse to offer for not seeing it sooner. Rather than try to describe the movie to you, since I think my words would fail, I'll let the trailer do the talking.

Original Theatrical Trailer

The character of Baron Boris von Frankenstein (aka Uncle Boris) was voiced by legendary horror star Boris Karloff, who of course played the original Frankenstein Monster in 1931 (Boris Frankenstein....get it? get it?!?). The character designs for the movie were by the esteemed former EC Comics artist Jack Davis, now working for Mad Magazine, whose creator, Harvey Kurtzman wrote the script. (wikipedia)

This fixed pose resin statue of Uncle Boris was released in limited numbers (only 500 made + 30 artists proofs) in 2001 by Cipriano Studios, with the full cooperation and endorsement of Karloff Enterprises. It comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity signed by both the artist, Tony Cipriano, and Sara Karloff. The statue here is number 451/500 and comes packaged in a box with a picture of the statue on the front, but no other artwork on the other sides.

I remember seeing this in my friend's collection many times but until seeing the movie, I never quite "got it". Even after seeing it, it wasn't a priority to get it, but after being outbid on one on Ebay and then getting a "Second Chance" offer when the winner didn't pay, I decided I might as well grab it. And I'm really glad I did!

Once it arrived, it became one of my favorite monster items. The sculpt of this thing is just outstanding and captures the character perfectly. The paint job is fantastic, with a nice glossy black to make the eyes shine just right. And the texture on the face is so good you would think you were looking at the original puppet!

I love how they managed to have him holding his hands behind his back, too. I'm guessing that each hand must have been separately molded and then attached to the sleeve, but it looks fantastic.

The detail on the shirt, with the tie, buttons, chain, etc.. is really nice, too. There is a metal rod inserted into his left foot that can go into a hole in the base to help secure the statue in place and felt on the bottom to cushion against your display surface. The overall presentation is really nice. With the base included, the statue stands about 9.5" tall.

Uncle Boris and the Mad Monster Party? may not be things I grew up with. But they both harken back to a time when nearly everyone in America was in love with monsters, a time I wish I could have lived. I can't go back in time, but with this statue I can bring a little bit of that time back to me.

:

Cool Rockets are a line of retro style space ships designed by artist Jeff Brewer and influenced by his love of old tin toys and comic book science fiction. Although the style may look familiar, each rocket is an original design by Jeff and copyrighted. This rocket is called "Space Tub" and comes courtesy of Toy Freakz.

"Space Tub" is just one of many statues in this line and comes packaged in a solid white cardboard box, with an image of the ship traveling through space, along with appropriate information about the item, affixed to the front and top of the box.

The item itself is a pre-painted resin statue and ready to display right out of the packaging. The only thing you need to do is slide the rocket onto the base. No glue or cement or anything like that is required. Simply insert the end of the base into a hole in the back of the rocket and it's ready to go.

Once on display, the statue stands 8" tall and 11" long. The base is designed to look like exhaust billowing out to the rocket's engine and is a really neat way to display the rocket in flight. It will balance just fine when stood on a flat surface, but do be careful when moving it as it will topple over if that balance is upset. To protect against whatever surface you display this on, the bottom of the base features a smooth felt covering.

The simple design of the rocket harkens back to a more innocent age and, even though it's a new design, is very appealing from a nostalgic perspective. It reminds me very much of the wonder and adventure of the old serials like Flash Gordon, etc.. The ship is simple, but the detail is nice where it needs to be. For instance the tail of the ship is very well sculpted and the rivets along the seam of the hull give it that nice home-made rocket look. The ship is hand weathered to look like it's been on adventures already.

In a day and age when our toys are getting increasingly complicated and dynamic and ferocious looking, the simplicity of things like this appeal to me more and more. Although this is intended as an adult collectible, I think the best thing I can say about it is that it makes you feel like a kid again. Space Tub and other Cool Rockets are available from the good folks at Toy Freakz.

One of the most fun and endearing science fiction movies of the 1950s was Invasion Of The Saucer-Men, released in 1957 from A.I.P. studios. Although the movie's biggest name actor was Frank Gorshin (later The Riddler on the 1966 Batman TV show), the real stars of the movie were the aliens, as created by legendary prop man/costume designer the late Paul Blaisdell (1927-1983). Blaisdell was also responsible for such iconic monsters as Beulah from "It Conquered The World", Marty, the 3 Eyed Mutant from "The Day The World Ended", The She Creature from the movie of the same name and more. This resin statue of his alien Saucermen comes courtesy of Ultratumba Productions and was sculpted by Ultratumba's Paul Schiola.

This pre-painted resin statue stands 14" tall and includes a display base with the movie title sculpted into it, raising the total height of the piece to a very impressive 15.75" tall. This will really stand out in your collection.

It comes packaged in a beautiful full color box, partially replicating the original (and highly sought after) movie poster. However, a picture of the figure has been added into the image and the effect is quite pleasing to the eye. The box alone is a substantial display piece at 18" tall, 13" across and 6.5" deep. Each side of the box is adorned with either a picture of the statue, stills from the movie (2) or best of all, an image of Paul Blaisdell and Bob Burns, along with a synopsis of the movie and Paul Schiola's thoughts on producing the statue. Overall, it's a very impressive presentation.

Although this statue is pre-painted, it does require a small amount of assembly. But don't panic, it's really simple to do. Just a bit of glue and all the pieces fit where they should with ease. There are 8 pieces included in the box, each wrapped in plastic and packed safely in styofoam.

You'll notice that there are THREE arms in the picture above. This is because in the movie, one of the aliens gets it's hand cut off. So, here you have the option of displaying this with either two good arms, or one with the hand off. Of course, in the movie the hand continues to live and terrorize so an extra hand, standing up on it's fingers, is included as well.

I've decided to display mine with the two good hands and the severed hand crawling at it's feet. It makes sense since there were multiple saucermen in the movie. Y'know what? Why do I keep telling you about this awesome movie? You SHOULD have already seen it and if you haven't, then watch it now. Seriously. RIGHT NOW!

Wasn't that awesome?

Anyway, back to this statue. In addition to an alternate arm/hand, you can also choose to display it with a weapon held in the left hand if you want to. The weapon has a small tab that you can insert into a hole in the palm of the hand, but unfortunately, it really doesn't hold without a spot of glue. So, choose carefully if you want it in there or not.

I think the sculpt on this thing is fantastic and it's one of my favorite items in my burgeoning monster collection. That huge head and those bulging eyes are irresistible. The veiny hands and head, the pointy ears...this is what saucermen look like! However, if you are the ultimate picky sort and think it doesn't look exactly like what you just saw onscreen, you should know that several different masks were used in the movie and Paul tried to incorporate the look of all of them into one piece, rather than go for a dead on accurate representation of one particular mask. I think the final result looks amazing. Really, pictures don't do it justice.

I'm not sure what else to say about this one. It's awesome. Just awesome. And it marks a definite upward trend from Ultratumba Productions. The Tingler was good. Beulah was great. And now this Saucerman is about to make my head explode. I can't wait to find out what is next.* This statue is limited to only 300 pieces so I highly recommend you link on over to Ultratumba and get one of these guys for yourself, before they are all sold out. If it's not yet on the products page there, just drop Paul an email at ultratumba@comcast.net and he'll hook you up. Or grab one on sale in the next 3 days at his Ebay store. You won't regret it.

*Trivia time: Did you know that "Invasion of the Saucer-Men" was later remade for TV as "Attack of the Eye Creatures"? The director, Larry Buchanan, also remade "It Conquered The World" as "Zontar, The Thing from Venus". I saw both of the remakes before I saw the originals. Both originals have monsters created by Paul Blaisdell and both of those monsters have now been released as statues by Paul Schiola. Larry Buchanan also remade "The Day The World Ended" as "In The Year 2889". "The Day The World Ended" has a monster made by Paul Blaisdell...

In 2015, Earth is under attack from mysterious, powerful beings called Angels. Their origins and goals are unknown, but the focus of their attacks are on the post-apocalyptic, high-tech metropolis of Tokyo-3- a city designed to be a hidden fortress for the secret headquarters of the United Nations special organization NERV. What makes the Angels such an imposing threat is their ability to project and manipulate AT Fields- natural, invisible, omni-directional defensive shields which cannot be penetrated by any physical attack or weapon, including the most powerful N2 bomb. Learning of the Angels’ existence years earlier, NERV constructed a small group of advanced biomechanical robots called Evangelions to fight the Angels. However, only 14 year old children are capable of merging their minds on a near-spiritual level with the 700’-tall armored humanoids. Shinji Ikari is only one of a select handful who has been able to accomplish this. ...But he does not care. He has been push aside and ignored ever since his father abandoned him when he was four years old. And he does not care if he dies or lives, or if humanity dies or lives. Together with two female pilots in their own EVA Units- the confident, confusing redhead Asuka Langley Souryu; and the curiously silent, red-eyed, blue-haired Rei Ayanami- the abandoned son of NERV’s Supreme-Commander must face his inner demons and find the courage to go on protecting humanity while fighting to preserve what little is left of his own!

Ten years after the controversial and popular anime series aired in Japan, questions still linger about the mysteries, philosophies, and meanings of the show. The two films (“Evangelion: Death and Rebirth” and “The End of Evangelion”) which followed the confusing end of the 26-episode series served only to add fuel to the fires in online debates. Where do the Angels really come from? Why are such monsters named after messengers from the Heavens? What do the Dead Sea Scrolls have to do with predicting the future? Why are there crucifix-shaped explosions? What is the actual height of an Evangelion Unit!?

To join in the celebration of the 10-year anniversary, Sega has contributed a new line of figures to the “Eva” saga.

No- not the Children in school clothes again. No- not the Children in their plug suits again. No- not a new sculpting of the Evangelion Units again. No- not a diorama again. No- not the characters dressed-up in incredibly-fantastic outfits again. And, no- none of the characters dressed-up in winter clothing. Again. (They don’t have winters anymore, after Second Impact, in 2015 C.E., remember?)

Nope, Sega took a different approach to two of anime’s most recognized characters. They turned two 14-year old girls...

...into mermaids.

“Hah--???”

Constructed completely of PVC, Asuka sits lightly & casually atop a pedestal of dark gray rock, accompanied by a lone clownfish. The tailfins are like those of a dolphin or whale. Continuing upwards, rather than having the tail be a completely original body part, a hint of distant parallel evolution is implied with a somewhat human knee halfway up her tail. There is an indent running across where her ‘thighs’ would be running from hip to knee, further suggesting that her legs had fused together rather than her simply loosing them and then growing a brand new tail. For modesty’s sake, Asuka is wearing a bikini-style golden girdle. The girdle run around to her backside as well, with a pair of flowing white, um- ‘scarves’ threaded through painted hoops. (One could think of them as ventral fins if they wished, though looking closely you can see that they are indeed tied on.) Unlike your average mermaid, this one has no fish scales. So the ‘skin-to-scales’ transition is only a change from the fiery orange tail paint to the plastic’s natural pale coloring just below her hips, and allows for a very risqué view of her still quite-human backside which is protected somewhat by the girdle.

Around her thin upper body, Asuka wears a red bikini top held tightly around her busty chest by two painted metal rings on the shoulder straps. Around her neck is a painted gold choker from which hangs a small dark blue diamond. On both upper arms are golden metal ringlets, and she had a gold bracelet tied over her right wrist. In “Evangelion”, the teenage pilots wear nerve headsets to connect them mentally to the Eva Units. These hide under the hair for the most part, but two little colored barrette-like bumps appear on either side of the head. Asuka, for some strange reason, wore her headset all the time- even to school and home! But it looked natural in her long red/brown hair. What Sega did here was swap-out Asuka’s normal red headset with a pair of fish-like red-&-white fins placed in the same locations. If you didn’t see the series, they look like an accessory that a mermaid might wear; but for fans it brings a knowing smile. They almost look like her ears, but you can clearly see that they are too high to be that. Asuka’s natural blue eyes look more like pre-applied decals than having been painted on; it’s hard to say. Sega opted to lighten Asuka’s long hair a bit more to give it a blond coloring, and then sculpted it so that it looked like it was flowing through water. Asuka seems quite pleased and unconcerned with her new form by the look on her face, her posture on the pedestal, and the way she casually tosses her hair aside. As for accessories, Asuka has none. The pedestal-like coral stand she is affixed to is molded in simple dark gray PVC, but isn’t highlighted with any other colors. A small orange, white, & black PVC clownfish permanently ornaments the base of the pedestal, partially hidden in painted yellow coral.

Construction is fairly well done. All parts have been glued on tightly, and do not move. They are also seamlessly put together, and it is hard to spot the separation points. The PVC is solid except for the base of the pedestal (which is open from below). Mold lines are difficult to spot at first, and are perhaps most easily spotted on, again, the pedestal. Asuka is shipped in a mildly aqua blue-decorated cardboard window box with a retracting handle, sandwiched between solid and transparent plastic inside. Since there are only two mermaids in the series, each character appears on either side of the box.

For a first outing, the limited Extra Mermaid Figure series by Sega started out well. Both Asuka Langley Souryu- and fellow EVA pilot-turned-mermaid, Rei Ayanami- have different expressions, poses, accessories, and overall looks. There is little if any criticism I can offer, let alone suggestions for alterations. I especially like how well sculpted her hair is, and how smooth and flowing the shape of her tail is. I also like how different her attitude is from Rei’s- she likes and is completely comfortable being a mermaid! If you are a fan of immobile figures, this is a change. If you are a fan of Asuka Langley Souryu and Rei Ayanami, this is a change. If you like “Evangelion” in general, and are looking for a change, this is it. I got mermaid Asuka-chan and mermaid Rei-chan because they were different. Any model company can dress up a favored character in interesting-looking clothes from different era or environments... But change their species!? That’s different! I recommend getting Asuka Langley Souryu from the Extra Mermaid Figure line, if you can find her anymore. She’s cheap, she looks good, and she seasons your figure collection up a bit.
