Destroy All Podcasts DX Episode 95 - Ghost in the Shell
Hosts: Betty, Feddy, Jeremy, Star
This is about boring rain-soaked music videos, whether or not you need to be naked to be invisible, and how everyone knows that you don't merge on the first date.
Click [HERE] to slip into Motoko's robot body and whisper to her ghost.
This is the American DVD cover, which in my opinion is a big step down from the Japanese.
See what I mean?
Look, it's cyborgs staring off into nothing. That's DEEP.
It's an Oshii movie alright! Humorless old guys are having a boring conversation!
Woah, Motoko! Maybe you need to lose some weight!
Argh! I'm being kicked by an invisible person who really likes crappy Virtual Reality headgear!
Oh man, if only we could all type this fast.
This dude has breasts and a really deep voice and you don't think it's a tranny?
Aww, wook at the cuddly widdle tank!
"So uh, this your first time here?"
Knowing Japan, I'm sure there's a fetish devoted to this. Aww, who am I kidding? ZUEY has this fetish.

6 comments postedHey there, In regards to The Matrix ripping-off 'GiTS' visually in which this is actually true.
However...you guys & gals had forgot to mention that the Wachovskis had heavily ripped-off Grant Morrison's 'The Invisibles' from DC/Vertigo in terms of plot and conceptual themes here. Mr. Morrison had noticed this a while back and as far as he's concerned....he doesn't seemed to mind...I think.

We weren't doing a podcast on The Matrix or on Grant Morrison, we were doing a podcast on Ghost in the Shell, so it was a little irrelevant.

Yeah, I know that what I said was a little off the text as far as The Matrix is concerned, but since you've brought up The Matrix ripping-off shows, I thought it would be interesting if I bring up this tidbit here.
I hope I didn't spoil the discussion here.

Yes! After two years of begging you to cover SAC, I finally see a GitS episode in my DAPDX feed! And imagine my disappointment when I see it's a movie you already covered in ST #4 (albeit there was less discussion than insulting everyone including my mom :) )!
And your main reason for not doing SAC, Feddy is back even! UGH! though he admitted not even finishing the first season. One day you will give in and do the ep with me. Screw Zuey and her love for Shirow. :p
Also, regarding the lungs, I always thought it was implied that with cyborg bodies, the organs were replaced with similar synthetic organ, which helped the brain cope with accepting the fake body. And while they might not need lungs, the brain still has to be respirated like a normal brain. Or at least I assumed so.
At least Motoko got a female child body at the end of this movie. In the manga, she got a feminine-looking dude's body.
Hahaha! We did this JUST to mess with you.
No, seriously, if you think about the approach we have been taking, it's not a huge shock that we did the first Ghost in the Shell movie. Think about it. We just did Avalon, Angel's Egg, and The Sky Crawlers. What do those all have in common?
We will do Stand Alone Complex at SOME point.
And the movie does not say anything of the sort. At no point are artificial lungs shown or mentioned, not even when they are building the cyborg body at the beginning of the movie. You just made that up!
Well, I think one of the issues Ghost in the Shell is bringing up is whether or not it even matters what body you are in.
-Jeremy
Regarding the cyborg bodies, maybe I was thinking about SAC or the manga then. It's been a while since I read it. Or maybe I am confusing something else with it.
