When I try to download it,

When I try to download it, only a few minutes get in before stopping. Fix that.

But I question I need answering. I hear various bemoans of anime fans saying that there's too many shows that are just referencing other shows. FLCL is very popular despite it too being a anime that references other anime as well. What gives? Do people just ignore those references and think FLCL is somehow DEEP?

Nope.

The file is complete. I just downloaded it successfully and the whole thing's there. It didn't work when I tried to upload it overnight but I reuploaded it completely yesterday morning since the original upload didn't work. There's something else going on.

I know personally I love

I know personally I love this anime. Its short and sweet and while sure it doesnt make a whole lot of sense, purely from an artistic stance I think its totally awesome. The in your face perspectives, the variation of art styles weather its referencing another show or not. Artisically this anime is awesome. If you havent seen it you gotta at least watch it once, hell its only 6 episodes. I heard rumors they were planning a blu-ray release.

They are. Funimation rescued

They are. Funimation rescued the license. Since this anime was made during the early 2000's when 2D digital productions started but weren't made in 1080p, it'd most definitely be an upscale. Funimation likes to bank on the idiocy of naive fans who don't do their homework.

ahh yeah that was the down

ahh yeah that was the down side I had heard about the blu-ray. I think they are just upscaling it. Depending on how much it is if you dont all ready own it, might be worth it since its so hard to find on dvd now.

I think they're releasing a

I think they're releasing a regular DVD set too. At least it won't be $60 (or was it $90) for the whole thing.

I think it was Ginrai,

I think it was Ginrai, asking if there is an anime that's a comedy but isn't about a guy getting slapped by a girl (i.e. the harem situation). Two words:

Hidamari Sketch.

Ah... this show.

Well first of all, hello and welcome, im new here and everything.

I remember when this aired on Adult Swim back in 2003, and I remember how different and insane this show was. But over time I seemed to realize that it did not make any since and people just seemed to be obsessed over that, which made me not like it so much.

Granted, its animated very well, but its one big drug trip with nothing stable of a story or plot to go on. Also, there are somethings I do like about the show which would be a scene here and there (and of course the music, which is why ameritaku like a band named after an object that they rest their tired heads on at night), but other than that, it not one of my favorites.

I will say this, since you guys are covering Gainax stuff, please, PLEASE do Otaku No Video next, or after your next one (which I might assume Wings of Honneamise, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi or Nadia). AWO listed Otaku No Video as "something to watch when you have seen alot of anime over a few years," but im really not to sure on that. I do agree that its a show that you will pick up a lot of otaku references on if you seen enough anime and you may know or be that person in their "Portrait of Otaku" segments, but its still a great piece and a easy story to follow, nerds will rise up (and the history of Gainax but done in a cooler way).

That's pretty much what I wanted to say for now.

I understand where you're

I understand where you're coming from ZeonicFreak. I think the thing with FLCL and why it worked was thanks to Adult Swim and the way it clicked with the crowd who would be in for that sort of thing to begin with. I'm not that big in it at all personally, and tend to favor Gainax's earlier work like Honneamise, Otaku no Video or such for the approach the studio was taking on said projects.

I need to check into

I need to check into Honneamise sometime, ive seen the Manga VHS tapes everywhere I go when I would hit up the flea market in the Raleigh NC area when i lived there about 2 some years ago, but i always passed it as "well it looks alright".

Personally, i would kill for some Gunbuster copies on VHS or some import DVD i can get my hands on, and thank god AnimEgo still has the rights to Otaku No Video ( i got my copy from them about a month ago) for now.

Going back to FLCL, for me, i had some good friends say to me "dude, what reason is there to like that show like everyone else" and honestly, there really wasn't a reason for me to like it. And if i did, i would have been like those "crazy ameritaku" who liked it without a valid reason other than "oh man your so lame if you dont like it, even though we cant give you a reason too". That seems to be everyone reason now days is not to question why they like this when there is nothing to like in the first place. But granted, there are some scenes that I do happen to like that I find pretty entertaining.

Not to get off topic, but Azumanga Daioh was a great example. Ive heard nothing but good things about it (or nothing against it at the time) and i borrowed the dvd set from someone. After 10 episodes i said "... done, im done with this". It was torture for me to continue to watch for it to "get better". Now the only reason people seem to like it (like my brother and his friend who gave me it) was "oh the pervy teacher is funny hu hu hu" and that is there only reason, that ONE CHARACTER. If thats really the case why people like it, I find that really stupid. Thats just my IMO.

Azumanga's the show that I

Azumanga's the show that I credit for rekindling my intrest in anime. Around the big anime boom in the late 90's/early 00's, I just wasn't really getting into the shows that were on air. I was mostly just into 80's/90's stuff at the time and was in the same "everything new sucks" phase. Azumanga Daioh really helped me enjoy the look of digital era anime.

So you can kinda say that

So you can kinda say that Azumanga is a show that found you so to speak?

Even though I really didn't like Azumanga that much, I do understand what you mean. There are certain shows that they feel more like "they found you" than you finding them.

That show for me is Initial D. I love Initial D, and always will. I dont care how badly done the CGI cars are, or the story not going past "this team racing this team" and a typical high school love story, I still love it for what it is.

My brief story to that was I was playing the Initial D (pretty sure ver 2) at an arcade in Conn back summer of 2003 when I went to see a friend of mine, but I was like "hey, i know this name, maybe i should check into this sometime". A couple of months went by and i found on the last disk of these Victory Gundam data cds a friend of mine gave me in high school (that got from someone else, and they were subbed in chinese so, i had no clue what was going on in the series when i watched them till i torrent the english subs a few years later) and the last disk had the first 4 episodes of Initial D. I thought "mmm, i need to check this out." And pretty much from there, i was hooked. And this came around the time when the individual DVD's started coming out to the states from Tokyopop (I of course watched them subbed) so my hard working lawn cutting money went to getting a dvd every other month.

I still love the arcade games and when I got a PS3, I turned around and got the Extreme Stage arcade port for the system.

I've already gotten flak on Initial D from Daryl Surat from AWO in one of the "decade in review" podcast comment sections were we went back and forth on that, and made it clear that AWO will never review the series because they all hate it. Fine by me. Its still up in the comments section if anyone wants to check that out, you may agree with what he says or what I say, it really doesn't matter to me.

This is a rare anime in that

This is a rare anime in that I truly dislike it.
It's like watching a dying koala vomit up rainbows while convulsing. No, that would be more entertaining and make more sense.
