Nice short DAPDX this

Nice short DAPDX this time.

There wasn't much I disagreed with. Nice mellow podcast- not a lot of goofing around, which can be distracting at times.

Not knowing about Tezuka's material, it was interesting to hear that many characters reappear in a lot of his works from before this with .

We own the VHS, and it's not one of my favorites either.

I thought the CGI was good for the time, and had no real problem with it. the super-sharp look and functionality was meant to be overblown to emphasize how high-tech Metropolis had become.

One of the things, as you pointed out, was how unconcerned the uncle was after Kenichi disappears, but I figured that he thought he died in the fire because he was relieved to see him later after the failed revolution.

...um, what happened to the end of the podcast, I only got 11 minutes of it, and it cuts-off suddenly!

Time

Hmm, I think you should try downloading it again. This is actually a long one, about an hour counting the top 5 segment and the music and trailer at the end. I just downloaded it here and got the entire thing without problems.

:D

I love it when you guys do retro anime podcasts.
Not that this movie is retro, but Tezuka is... If that makes any sense.

I personally liked Metropolis. The CG didn't bother me the first time I watched it.
Then I rewatched it and yeah it's pretty bad.

Retro

Glad you liked it! We do have some actually old anime lined up for future podcasts (including more Tezuka). The CG really is a sticking point for me, not so much on its own merits, but more because of how badly it clashes with the 2D animation.

P.S. Vivalavivi, email us your address so we can ship you your prize!

Haven't heard the podcast

Haven't heard the podcast yet, not sure if I will. Probably because I really like Metropolis. It's one of the better examples of my favourite "mechanical Pinocio" theme that dwells on how much human a robot can become and what defines humanity.

The CGI was fine for me, it did the retro-futuristic city justice and the plot was well-written with a great ending, it's a good reimagening of the original manga story which I have on the shelf. And, this was my first anime to be bought on DVD :)

Good Grief

Good grief ... you know, it's really sad to me when people bring out the word 'reimagining' to anything nowadays. It's just a pretentious, trendy word for a remake to pass as an original story which it isn't. It's as worse as the comics industry passing trade paperback comics as 'graphic novels'.

For text's sake, just say it's a remake.{:|

Character Designs

I think that you've kind of hit on my problem with the whole "retro designs" thing--it's that they're trying to tell serious, dark stories with character designs that contemporary audiences interpret as "cute cartoony light-hearted character".

Add to that the usual Tezuka thing of "Disney had random cute jokes in their movies and dammit SO WILL I", and I can understand why you guys weren't quite able to commit all the way to this movie.
