I actually really like the old pulpy FHE covers. They look like bad comic books and even include a little teaser comic printed on the back of the box. Much more charming than the horrible Rhino cover (http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/4031/rhinof.jpg) or the totally bland Shout Factory cover (http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/595/shoutfactory.jpg). As for the hard hats, it's not just Spike and Sparkplug, EVERY PERSON IN THIS SHOW WEARS A HARD HAT, even when they are not on the job site. Why? By contrast, the FHE is better, but not by a heck of a lot. The Shout Factory cover isn't bad. Just boring. What Shout Factory should have done for the cover was to recreate the scene of Prime and Megatron fighting on the dam. Now THAT would have been cool. But my god, I had forgotten about Rhino's terrible completely random cover. The only way that cover could possibly be more random is if they had used a screen grab of, say, Huffer or Windcharger, instead of Optimus Prime. EVERY hat is a head hat!!!! I never had this tape, but I had other FHE tapes, and OMG. I hate that noise. |

First of all... OH BRUDDER! Look at that VHS box! That is awful. Scale issues all over the place. Megatron's giant head and puny arm cannon. And what the heck are they doing? Are they fighting or dancing?
My favorite part about this show is that they not only ignored toy accuracy in most cases, but they also had a lot of one-time-only special powers that would not correlate with the toys at all. Prime's battle ax. Megatron's mace. Jazz's grappling hook. Hound's diving hood. (Why? Does he need to breathe?!) Nowadays, that would be sacrilege, having the cartoon do stuff that the toys do not.
Also, I always figured that Spike and Sparkplug's hard hats were there because they basically lived in a cave with a bunch of giant robots. Of course, that theory falls apart whenever they leave, so... Hey look, there's Optimus' trailer!
