So I am officially in freak-out mode, with only a few days left until I am off for the motherland.

This trip came together rather quickly, so I feel as though I am forgetting something, but man am I excited to go again. This will be my third trip to Tokyo. I'll be a big man in Japan once again.

Some cool things are going to be happening on this trip, only some of them I can tell you about now. For one, I'm going out to HobbyLink Japan for the day to check out the new warehouse and interview Scott Hards. Hmmm, i guess that means I need to write down some questions. Any questions for HLJ?

Then a few days later I will be covering the 2009 Tamashii Expo at UDX Akihabara... I can practically taste the metallic T-28. Of course, I'll have the HD camera on me, so I will do my best to make you feel as if you are there along with me.

I'll also be doing some insane toy shopping, hitting up all of the hot spots - some covered in Tokyo Underground, some that are super-secret and known only to the illuminati. I'm dying to check out the new 10-floor Mandarake in Akiba, and of course I will hit the usual haunts.

I think it's important to try to be your own person, but sometimes it's best to follow those that have gone before. Back when I first got into the hobby, the Japanese Toy Database that was such a great part of the now-defunct Cool Japanese Toys website was a constant source of reference for me as I was starting out as a Jumbo Machinder collector. When I first started looking at it, each entry included a price estimate for a mint in box specimen of the listed toy. After awhile, these were taken down. At the time, I was a bit disappointed in this, but I've since come to understand why it had to happen. It's just become nearly impossible these days to predict what any toy should sell for, but the marketplace for Jumbo Machinders in particular seems to be particularly volatile. (A completed auction search for "Machinder" on Ebay right now will reveal some rather eye-popping final bids for some not that special jumbos.)

While some would tell you "don't sweat the small stuff", I prefer the pre-existing catchphrase "it's the little things in life that matter". As a Jumbo Machinder collector, it's likely that you may have heard me complain on occasion about a lack of space. But it's not just the jumbos that cause this problem. I've also got about 20 boxes of comic books. And after I stopped collecting comics and before I started in on toys, I had another brief obsession...dvds. For awhile there, I was buying them hand over fist. And while my collection now isn't that big, I do think it's larger than the average person's. I've got just north of 400 of them and as that number grew, it became harder and harder to find a place to display them all. I had a little bookshelf at first, then a bigger bookshelf and then both bookshelves together and finally both were overflowing. I'd tried to keep my eyes open for a better option, but never really made a point of it. But I recently had enough. Something had to be done.

Today, I got an email from my good friend Juan Carlos Azpurua. You may remember him as the guy who sent us the report from Venezuela's first big anime convention, Convencion Avalancha in 2006. He also provided us with the translation of his friend Alvaro Carvajal's report from his Hasbro Office Tour in 2007. Juan Carlos collects mostly 1980s American toy lines, but also has an interest in Japanese robots and has been an invaluable source for learning about what was produced in Venezuela. Everything I know about Famosa Jumbos is because of him.

Well, a couple years back, he sent me the following picture.

This image was from a vintage Venezuelan toy catalog and shows a Mazinger Z Jumbo Machinder that I'd never heard of before. It's based on the Popy mold, but has yellow limbs. Strangely, although it adorns the cover of the catalog, there was no mention of it inside! So it's been unclear if this was a toy that was ever actually produced... until today.

Dead Space

A game about scary lighting, scary sounds, cutting off limbs, and when Scientology Goes Wild.

The cold draft of space silences the sounds of torment. The broken lights flicker and flash against the blood stained floor. The patter of inhuman feet strikes against the metal floor one step ahead of you around every dark corner. The lights suddenly fail and scraping blood curdling howls resonate through the bulkhead walls. Alone and afraid, you clench your weapon tightly watching as your ammunition counter approaches ‘0’ huddled in a corner. It is not safe. Welcome to the USG Ishimura. Welcome to Dead Space.

This is about nameless pilots, building robots, taking up missions to fight robots, and fighting even bigger robots.

Secret Six
on-going series: "Unhinged" story arch
DC Comics, 2009

The Secret Six are DC Comics antihero cast of washed out supervillains leading a life of mayhem against the rest of the supervillian society in the New Earth. They star now in their own ongoing series after two successful mini-series events written by Gail Simone with art by Nicola Scott and Javi Pina. This incarnation of the team began with a rogue villain coming to blows with the DC Comics’ most notorious villains in Villains Unitied (written by Simone, but with art by Dale Eaglesham and Val Semeiks), their first outing and tie-in mini-series for the Infinite Crisis event. In Villains, the mysterious ‘Mockingbird’ gathered a team of six renegade villains to fight against the global army of villains created by Lex Luthor and his inner circle in their revenge initiative for the events of DC’s previous Identity Crisis event. The story follows Deadshot, Scandal Savage, Catman, and Ragdoll; the surviving core-cast members from the original miniseries. The remaining two open seats were filled by Parademon; a runaway soldier from of the demigod Darkseid, and Cheshire, another fatal female villain. With Parademon dead, and Cheshire having betrayed her teammates and gone rogue once more, the team fills the remaining seats with other unknown or otherwise unattached villains. Recently the vacancies serve to fan appeal in adding characters that can provide a range of comedic to hardcore violent action, or a rare spots of character depth.
