I went into Summer Wars knowing nothing about it but my response to the film was it was more about family and family togetherness then anything else which I think I lot of anime fans seem to overlook. It's a fun movie overall, like you said I dont think it blew me away in terms of breaking any new barriers but it's one of my favorite new things to come out in a wile as Japan really has not turned out much of anything lately.
BTW as a sidenote I have to agree with you on Miyazaki to a certain extent. I love Mononoke Hime to death and I think Castle of Cagliostro and Nausicaä are great films but the rest of his stuff (and Ghibli as a whole) dont really do it for me.
