I've been meaning to start watching dougram, as I love the mech designs, but part of me wonders if i will taint my memories of the designs. I mean, I first got those designs from Robotech kits, and then the Robotech Defenders - so i already had my own story. Not sure If I am ready to put them in a new context.

This will probably sound strange,but I have no problem with conflicting stories for the same robot. I mean,I know some people will say they can't see Jetfire as a Transformer character since they're more used to the design as a Veritech,but to me they're two different things that happen to look the same. I don't really have a hard time seeing,say,CyKill from gobots as a piloted mech in Machine Robo,or Powermaster Optimus Prime as Ginrai,or whatever.

To me,the mechs in Dougram are the mechs from Dougram,even though there are mechs from Robotech that look exactly the same.

I don't think it's not that hard of a question. The companies have focused marketing on otaku because it's successful in a recession era. And yeah, the intrest in anime girls has been there for quite some time, it's just in the past decade, the technology for PVC sculpting has increased highly. Make exactly what the otaku want and they'll buy it.

I really think Evangelion helped pushed the marketing for otaku merchandising. The Eva units were originally conceived as designs that couldn't easily be made as toys/models but look at today where there's tons of figures, which include a crazy amount of figures of Asuka and Rei (which didn't exist before Eva).
