Of course they aren't....

The Abyssals are Allied forces. Duh.

(But seriously, that's one of the craziest things I've heard)

That line about KanColle puzzled me as well. Was the question whether Abyssals were supposed to physically resemble Americans in some (possibly racist) way? I could understand that being plausibly denied.

But in terms of them representing American forces in the game's historical context, was that really a question? I mean, I am only familiar with the show, but in that (as I'm sure you know) all of the battles roughly correspond to the real battles of the Pacific war, with the Abyssals representing Allied forces in their actions, ship types, and force disposition.

You know, Mr. Haru Menna

You know, Mr. Haru Menna actually asked people to video tape the panel specifically so they could have a handy reference for explaining that the Abyssals were not Americans but nobody did that lol.

I don't want to speak too much for him, but the gist of it was that the Abyssals replace allied forces in the context of KanColle, they are actually designed to be like yokai or other Japanese spirits. Like the I-Class are bakekujira and the Ka-class are Funayurei.

I also don't feel comfortable

I also don't feel comfortable tearing into an argument based on one line that I don't have any context for, but with that out of the way, I'd put forward that Japan not only has historical precedent for portraying foreigners with demonic traits in artwork, but if you start talking about ''black ships'' in Japanese there's a place that immediately leads, and that's to Admiral Perry's fleet. So it's like, yes, their designs can incorporate yokai but that doesn't really mean anything one way or the other. There's all sorts of crazy designs in Kancolle. (I hear one of the boats is even an idol singer!)

Great Panel on Macross

This was my second year attending the panel, and you did another great job! I really liked what you added in from last year. As for the time issue, speaking for myself, it wasn't a problem as we knew you were sick.

I was cosplaying as Ramba Ral at the panel, sitting next to Issamu. I might be cosplaying original series Kakazaki next year, need to see if my buddy can make the helmet.

Strangely enough you bought that Hot Rod cel just before I pulled the trigger on it. I ended up with some Gundam cels and a Harlock one.

Hope to catch your panel next year, and maybe post what other panels you'll be working on as you really have a way with describing the mechanics of Macross mecha that always gets me super hyped.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the panel. Next year I'm thinking of trying something else and giving the Macross one a break. As far as what panels I was on, I only knew about being on the Mecha panel in advance as the Gundam for Newbies and Air Combat one I volunteered to help with like the day of the convention.

I knew when I saw that Rodimus cel I had to go fast. I feel like the chosen one or something :3
