To boldly go...

Boy, what a time to start experimenting with a blog, huh...?

Yesterday, Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions released the first official trailer for the upcoming film "Star Trek". We've had only the teaser trailer (men welding on the hull of the under-construction Constitution-class U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701) while historic drops from America's space program narrate) to work with for a year, so this is what we've been waiting for.

It's great to see some moving footage & sound now, but I am still cautiously optimistic as to how it will turn out. Now, as we all know, trailers often show you the best stuff... and out of context at that! It will be up to the world to decide if the pacing, writing, directing, set construction, and- most importantly in this case- casting will help to rejuvenate the 40-year old franchise.
Yes, the style of sets, costumes, and ships has been 'updated', but it remains to be seen if even Trekkers will accept it- and they are the audience that holds a majority say in if the film soars or bombs; even though it is being made for the specific purpose of re-inviting outsiders to the sub-genre. The reason "Star Trek IV- The Voyage Home" was so popular and well-known outside of the fandom is because there was little beaming, phasing, or warping, and it all took place in late-20th Century Earth. Oh, and it was smeared with a "Save The Whales" campaign which Greenpeace adored (after they found out that those close-up shots of George and Gracie weren't from divers getting uncomfortably-close to real wild humpback whales), and pockets of well-placed societal critique & humor which were not-unusually-absent from the previous three moodier & dramatic films.

. . .

In other news, the defining classic sci-fi film "Forbidden Planet" (1956) has been tagged by DreamWorks to be remade. Two words:

Oh, $#!+.

A remake!? Come on...! For once, if you must bring a classic back, wouldn't this be a grand opportunity for a sequel??? I would accept a sequel far better than a remake.
That's the thing I don't get about Hollywood these days- why fix it if it ain't broke!? Actors Leslie Nielsen and Anne Francis are still around (both in their late 70s now); though we know what a joke the career of the former has been for the longest time.

What are those lyrics again-?

You don't tug on Superman's cape,
you don't speed into the wind,
you don't pull off the mask off that ol' Lone Ranger,
and you don't mess around with Slim!

This must be riding the coattails of the remake of "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (another really bad idea... especially with frickin' Keanu Reeves in the lead); just as "Iron Man" did with "Transformers".

You know what I would like to see a remake of? Something bad, like- ohh... say, "Robot Jox". It had a lot of good ideas, but it suffered from really bad directing & acting. (The sequel to it, "Robot Wars" is even more unspeakably bad.)
Or- hey- howsabout another Power Rangers movie, huh? The first one was fair enough (could have used some refinement in hindsight), but the second prematurely put the nail in the coffin because it was obviously a made-for-TV movie that was forced to be projected onto the big screen.

. . .

In other news, director Ridley Scott has gotten the "Go" to make a film based off of Joe Haldeman's classic sci-fi novel "The Forever War" (1974), which was written during the upheaval and controversy of the war in Ira- uh, Vietnam.
Now, this is good news! Powered armor, time-displacement through faster-than-light-travel, no artificial gravity, no anti-inertia suspension fields, veterans of war coming home to poor reception, future shock, and wars against not-so alien invaders started under false pretenses... Though written afterwards without Haldeman's awareness of it, "The Forever War" is often considered a counterpoint to Robert A. Heinlein's more pro-militaristic "Starship Troopers" (1959)... and we all know how Hollywood treated that adaptation in 1997.

. . .

Uh-oh...

My Dad's camera is beginning to conk out on me. Why? Well, without it, you would not even be aware of who EVA_Unit_4A is. Every single shot I take now, regardless of how I change the settings, lighting, etc., turns out red.

If this keeps up, you may not hear from me again for a long time... save for in this blog and quips in review comments!

I have no clue how I'm gonna afford a new digital camera right now; I'm almost at the point where I have to stop collecting to save money right now for gas and rent...

Forget "The Forever War",Ridley Scott's next project is MONOPOLY!:

That stinks to hear about your camera. I was hoping to upgrade my video camera, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon now, either. Money's so tight these days.. :(
